If tonight goes according to plan all four teams in Europe's two biggest competitions will be English.
The English Premier League is a fantastic product.

so i just finished watching the latest cedars video on spanking children.
i like lloyd, and think that overall he does a good job covering issues in his videos.
but i've gotta disagree with him on this issue, to a point.. i don't agree with beating your children, but i do believe in spanking, when appropriate.
if your kid is in my presence, I expect him or her to behave. Whatever you gotta do to make it happen, do it
Could not disagree more.

You think adults should hit young children so as to 'build up a resilience to pain'.
What sort of explanation do I need to give for condemning that?

what happens if they won't be reasoned with?
There are all sorts of punishments you can use. Denial of privileges - no TV, games, after-school sports etc. With little children being made to sit apart from the family for a while 'the naughty step' can be effective.
Even more important is noticing and rewarding good behaviour.
It takes time, patience, and consistency. Act like an intelligent adult.
In the UK it is illegal to smack using any implement or to use your hand in such a way as to leave a mark. In Scotland the legal defence of 'reasonable chastisement' is set to be removed this year making smacking illegal.

I think when parent are too soft on children, it doesn't build up a resilience to pain. - Olig
Perhaps the most idiotic comment I have read on this forum for a very long time.

The Isle of Man is a very bad place to break the law. It only stopped whipping people with a birch in 1976.

there are times when it is warranted and needed
There are times that parents run out out of wisdom and/or patience. Smacking makes you feel like you have an answer. It's lazy and counter-productive.
How many times have you heard a parent say 'stop doing that' but their body-language and tone of voice invites defiance? Too many parents only want to be best buddies with their children and forget to be the adult.

1. A child is about to stick a metal object into a light socket.
Grab the child. Explain the consequences. How on earth would spanking the child achieve anything?
2. A child continually acts up towards his sibling, parent, or teacher, and taking away priviledges/grounding does not seem to be getting through.
Then you are probably not targeting the most effective restrictions and doing it consistently.
3. A child gets into serious trouble, i.e. shoplifting.
The child needs to know that they are still loved but that they will face the consequences for their behaviour. You should probably look carefully at their choice of peer-group
I think parents overestimate how much influence they ultimately have on their children. You can only do your best. Teaching them that hitting people who won't comply with your wishes is not the solution.
