I'm sure it has some sort of pagan origin. Most things do.

Is Another 1975 Possible?
by God_Delusion inhowdy,.
do you think the society has a planned campaign where they will state that armageddon will be upon us within the next 10 years and actually state that armageddon will definitely hit by 2020?
we all know that they have been drumming into us that "the end is just around the corner", but can you see them pulling another 1975 stunt in order to bring in additional members?.

No. Now that the leadership is committee based, I think it would be next to impossible to get a 2/3 approval for a member's pet theory about a certain date.

If there's an especially good nugget of information I cut-and-paste it and email it to myself.

I am still afraid to consciously stop thinking for any period of time because of an irrational fear that the demons are going to gain access to my brain. The JW folklore continues to have it's effect.
I'm usually honest about what I'm thinking unless I happen to be thinking about JW issues and a JW asks me. I don't think they'd be too receptive hearing "Oh, I'm just thinking about why the definition of the Superior Authorities flip-flopped and what does that say about the holy spirit's guidance?"

Things in the past that show you that your doubts started earlier than you thought
by sabastious ini was just talking to my wife this morning about underlining or highlighting the wt paragraphs.. when i was 13 years old i would fight with my dad because i refused to highlight the answers.. the reason was because i wanted my comment to be genuine.
i felt that highlighting the "answer" made me lean on just using that as a crutch and not truly putting it in my own words.. i still hold that argument now, and i am 26. the only reason you would ever have to highlight something in a study book would be if you needed to remember it, maybe it is fairly complicated or subtle information that could be easily forgotten.. so many times in the wt the "question" has the same phrase that's in the paragraph!
it's literally like playing connect the dots.. so what i would do is not highlight during the family study.

When I was younger I had a talk on 1914. While preparing it I was looking up the date of Bablyon's destruction to expand on the date. Darn dictionaries kept saying 587 instead of 607. I was running out of time so I shelved the idea and never thought of it till years later.

WTS: creative days took aeons - WT Feb 15th, 2011
by undercover inthere's already a couple of threads discussing this particular issue of kool-aid version of the wt, but i just had to start another after reading about the creative days mentioned in this issue.. we debate from time to time if the wts has ever officially retracted their doctrine that the earth and all things created are less than 50,000 years old.
there's been some quotes that show them waffling on the age of the planet itself but still sort of holding to the notion of all creation happening within a defineable 7 day period.
how long is a creative day?

I can't really seek professional help. Any self-help suggestions for depression?
by easyreader1970 ini really don't have the time or the finances for a professional psychiatrist.
i know i am depressed and i know why.
the problem, as i have said before in one or two other threads, is that the solution won't really change my depression and may, in fact, make it worse.. so i am resigned to being depressed but would like to know if there are some coping techniques or other suggestions.

A few books on cognitive therapy may be of use:
http://www.amazon.com/Cognitive-Therapy-Judith-Beck-Phd/dp/0898628474/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_3
I have the first one, but have only read the first few chapters. It is targetted towards a mental health therapist and is detailed in it's approach, but I still think it's accessible to a patient. The second one I have not read, but it seems to be more of a self-help workbook type with exercises and such. I really can't explain much more since I don't have a good understanding of the subject yet. I just remember hearing that this type of therapy has been used succesfully to cope with problems so I got interested in the subject. My impressino is that it is basically a way of retraining negative thinking.
Maybe Lady Lee may know more about this type of therapy?

Today, there is a rising tide of atheistic and evolutionist propaganda dependent on flawed and baseless reasoning. We should not let this flood of faulty thinking confuse or intimidate us.
I think the important point here is that this is an Ad hominem attack. There is no attempt to reason on the facts (just like the Andre experience...)

QFR feb 15th 2010 - lets be honest , we haven't got a clue...
by dozy inthe questions from readers feb 15th 2011 raises the (no doubt burning in many jws minds) question about why moses became angry with aarons 2 sons after the death of their brothers.. the wtbts undertakes to answer this question but really doesn't seem unsure of themselves (perhaps the channel of communication was suffering some interference that day.
) notice the numerous ways that the wtbts in a short (half page) article hedges its bets.
it reminded me of a schoolboy cooking up a story when he was caught with his hands in the cookie jar , vacillating & hedging as he tries to think up an acceptable answer.. it appears that , the surviving priests had evidently acted , aaron may have wondered , perhaps he felt , aaron mayespecially have reasoned , aaron may have thought , moses seems to have accepted , evidently, jehovah too was satisfied.. .

Remember, since the Watchtower is blbe-based, it comes from Jehovah. Obviously Jehovah is not completely sure why he was angry with Aaron's sons, so hence the non-absolute language.

Seriously, though. I think Andre is a real person. People will believe things because they WANT to beleive something, whether or not the evidence is for or against it.
