High gas prices / Extremist Muslim regimes / China playing everyone for fools?
by tootired2care inthis is probably a dull topic for some, but i did some research out of my own curiosity, and just wanted to put it here for my own future reference, but i'm also curious to hear your thoughts on this as well.. -----------------------------.
muslim extremism is still a big problem, and a major threat to world energy markets.
examples iran, muslim brotherhood in charge of egypt etc.

I Believe Catholicism And Its Trappings Are Silly, Strange & Weird!!!
by minimus inmy italian friend loves going to the "feasts" that occur in italy, boston or nyc.
these feasts feature a "saint" with dollar bills pinned around her and they parade the saint in a long procession and chant "viva (whomever)".
they are quite serious about this and are proud to talk about the past generations of observers who appreciated the events.

I haven't read the entire thread here. After many years on the site, this conversation has been had many times.
I don't know if you place value on definitions in Wikipedia, but this from them on the term "State Atheism" (references omitted):
State atheism may refer to a government's anti-clericalism, which opposes religious institutional power and influence in all aspects of public and political life, including the involvement of religion in the everyday life of the citizen. State promotion of atheism as a public norm was first practiced during a brief period in Revolutionary France. Since then, such a policy was repeated only in Revolutionary Mexico and some communist states. The Soviet Union had a long history of state atheism, in which social success largely required individuals to profess atheism, stay away from churches and even vandalize them; this attitude was especially militant during the middle Stalinist era from 1929-1939. The Soviet Union attempted to suppress public religious expression over wide areas of its influence, including places such as central Asia.
(Underline mine).
So I'm not sure why you say it had nothing to do with atheism.
~Binadub
Because it had nothing to do with atheism. There is one simple reason that the governments mentioned demanded atheism. They also abolished labor unions. People gathering together for any reason is a source of strength, pure and simple.

Thank you Berengaria for some much needed reason and information. Maybe this will intelligently curb the usual "European socialism revealed" idiocies from ignorance.
Thank you BC. But it appears that you are overly opptimistic

And yet they have so much less crime, and our own extreme sentences appear to do nothing to deter.
If he is not considered a threat after serving his sentence, the maximum available under Norwegian law, he will be eligible for release in 2033, at the age of 53.
However, his demeanor, testimony and declaration that he would have liked to kill more people helped convince the judges that, however lenient the sentence seems, Mr. Breivik is unlikely ever to be released from prison. He could be kept there indefinitely by judges adding a succession of five-year extensions to his sentence.
The relative leniency of the sentence imposed on Mr. Breivik, the worst criminal modern Scandinavia has known, is no anomaly. Rather, it is consistent with Norway’s general approach to criminal justice. Like the rest of Europe — and in contrast with much of the United States, whose criminal justice system is considered by many Europeans to be cruelly punitive — Norway no longer has the death penalty and considers prison more a means for rehabilitation than retribution.
Even some parents who lost children in the attack appeared to be satisfied with the verdict, seeing it as fair punishment that would allow the country, perhaps, to move past its trauma.
“Now we won’t hear about him for quite a while; now we can have peace and quiet,” Per Balch Soerensen, whose daughter was among the dead, told TV2, according to The Associated Press. He felt no personal rancor toward Mr. Breivik, he was quoted as saying.
“He doesn’t mean anything to me,” Mr. Soerensen said. “He is just air.”

Oh look. Beks is now a parrot on someone's shoulder.
I thought about directing him to some enlightening posts by Burn the Ships, but didn't care enough to waste the time. "Now you've got it" just seemed more to the point.
