Since leaving the truth, do you celebrate holidays, and does your participation in such bring you happiness?
by Stand for Pure Worship ini ask this respectfully, and do so after watching a favorite show of mine's season opener which had a new years storyline.
hollywood tends to make movies and television show episodes centered around holiday themes appear warm and blissful.
while i'm thankful to have never participated in such holidays, i can't deny my curiosity about ex-jws that do celebrate.

If SFPW really were, he would just shut up. Pure worship would be quiet, and without ego, never letting the left hand know what the right was doing.

Great Music
by Berengaria init appears that many of the best music threads have been purged.
i can't imagine the formula that would eliminate such wonderousness while preserving "involuntary muscular contractions", but so it is.. the first offering.

Did you suffer humiliating childhood experiences as a JW?
by yadda yadda 2 inin john cedar's (jwsurvey.org) latest excellent article on his blog about a us teacher that got reprimanded for trying to force a jw boy to salute the american flag, he relates a similar childhood experience where he was terribly humiliated at school in view of his classmates.. this reminded me of a similar humiliating experience i suffered at school, when i was 11 years old.
during our school's end of year 'prom night' (not actually called that in the country i live) which was in the style of a disco night, my unbalanced jw mother came to pick me up early and stormed right into the hall and grabbed my arm and pulled me out in front of all my friends right in the middle of the dancing.
on the way out she gave the teachers a lecture about the music being far too loud and how unwholesome the whole thing was for children of my age.

Aggghhh. I remember in Kindergarten, the teacher, Mrs. Barajas, coming up to me during the flag salute (I stood with the rest, arms at sides) and jerked my right arm up and slapped it on my chest angrily. I was totally mortified.
Holidays....................Glee Club..............Shudder
When I was about 7, myself and another little girl went to a door (why the hell were two little girls probably no more than 7 and 10 alone at the door??) and a lady came to the window that looked over the porch and literally screamed at us "you should be ashamed of yourselves". I was. My stomach still gets knots when I think of that one.

How do you feel about Common Core education?
by nonjwspouse inespecially if you are a teacher, how did you learn about it to begin with?
was there a common core rep doing a slick presentation?.
how do those of you with kids on school feel about, among others, things such as the deemphasis on the great works of literature ?.

The complaint that teachers have to "teach to the test" is a long standing one. My limited experience with common core is that it actually gives teachers more opportunity for creativity. One thing I have heard (from teachers) is that those teachers who have been teaching for some time and are comfortable with their routines, have a lot of work ahead of them. They are not happy about it. Teachers who are already engaged and creative will have easier going. We have two young English teachers that are new to our school, they both came in last year and comprise the "English Department" at our small school. They are doing amazing things.
Remember, each state/school district is responsible for creating their own curriculum under the standards.
Most of the articles you have linked do not cite the fear and paranoia that you are presenting. Of course there will always be discussions and disagreements on the best way to accomplish any goal. Nothing wrong with that as long as those discussions are based on facts and understanding of the subject.
We are done a great disservice when people like Glen Beck weigh in with their fear mongering tactics on such important issues.

Private schools are also adopting common core.
There is nothing secretive about it. Here is the website http://www.corestandards.org/
