Hi Jimmy,
It sounds like your friend has a chip on his shoulder. Tell him it may be good to consider that if independance had taken longer to achieve, it's a strong possibility that abolition of slavery would also have taken longer.

a black friend of mine will not celebrate the 4th of july.
he feels it's a mockery since black people were still slaves when the country gained its independence.. i wanted to hear what other people think of that.
that's the first person i've ever heard mention it, but i never thought about that.

hey everyone, i was hesitant to post this article i read because abortion debates can turn so ugly so fast.
so i thought about it for and decided i should post it because it is important for those of us who value the right the choose to be aware of what that really means here in the us.
this article is from the weekly alternative newspaper here in the minneapolis/st.
Hi peaceloveharmony,
I am probably one of the most conservative, right wing types on this db, and as much as I think that abortion is a dreadful affair, I think that it should be left up to the woman and her doctor to decide on an abortion. I think that is the woman's fundamental right. I don't believe the government has the right to interfere in what a woman does concerning something inside her body.

this came up with an acquaintance recently.
it has been brought up a few times on db's like this a time or two.
why don't jws limit the amount of involvement in "worship" by children to sunday school like mainstream christianity does?

Hi Pat, I can relate. I remember reading something once about a person's character being basically decided before the age of ten. If that is true, - anybody PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong - then the components of our character that deal with social interaction would be found to be missing among children of JW and similar sects. That is what gets stolen from children when they are denied the most socially normal children's activities.
That's just my take on it.

it seems like to me the majority of people who are in the truth, are were in the truth was a result of either a family member are a friend witnessing to them and not many seem to have been found in the door to door work.. from my years of associating with the borg i cannot recall many coming in the truth from the door to door work.. how were you sucked in?
for me it was my aunt who has now even though i am not disfellowshipped decided to write me out of her will to the tune of about $150,000.00 (maybe i should hang around a couple more years)dont think i will.. please respond .
thanks.
Hi Jim,
I was born into it. I believe that you get shafted to a greater degree if you are born into it. As a teenager, I had JW friends who were brought "into the 'truth'" as a result of parents who got sucked into the org. I am envious of the fact that they had at least the opportunity to partake in activities normal for youngsters. Like organized sports, or school related activities - the kinds of things that can instill positive qualities needed for emotional and social maturation. Children who were deprived of these types of normal activities find out later as adults how little in common they can have with other people. It can take many years to overcome the effects of the social isolation that is the natural result of being raised as a JW or any other cultish sect.

how many of you ex-jws can recall a particular instance during your life as a jw when you or someone you know had a mini crisis of conscience over what you now, upon reflection, consider to be the most trivial or petty in nature?.
i've got a good one for you.
i remember my mom and one of my aunts engaged in a very serious debate about whether they should feed a freshly caught mouse to the cat because it hadn't been properly bled!!!.

I recently told this to my youngest sister and she just positively ROARED!
She's been out of the org for years now but can still recall how petty one becomes if they are to be considered a "good" JW.
Does anyone else have similar instances to relate?

this quote from gen. referring to life in the garden gave me pause to post a question to anyone who might have special interest in weather science.. if, as according to the way jws understand the biblical account, the pre-flood earth was enshrouded in a global mist under a canopy of water, where are the weather systems which are needed to create wind.
remember, for this "canopy" theory to be true we have to eliminate normal daytime heating as the cause for a "breezy" time of the day, since daytime heating would have caused cloud build-up and inevitibly caused it to rain - which apparently wasn't a feature of pre-flood life.
do you think that the necessary elimination of weather systems - in order to maintain a "canopy" - goes against well understood laws of our physical world?.
Thanks for your response Alan.
Your mention of the origins of the "canopy" theory was interesting. I had always assumed that this idea came from the Bible writers themselves as a means of bolstering their Flood Theory.
But either way, you still end up trying to mesh what science tells us with the fictions of Bible writers.

Hello Aguest,
After watching the Stanley Cup Finals, I found the NBA finals was like watching paint dry.

from http://www.greatcrowd.com/159ubb/forum22/html/000167.html.
he gave us some statistics about how much the occurrences of random violence have escalated over the recent years, and it's terrible.
something like 99% of us will be exposed to, or become a victim of a violent crime.
It really shouldn't surprise anyone who graduated the Paradise Book, because by the time you are six years old you are pretty well versed in the subject of FEAR. (I mean, visions of your eyeballs rotting in their sockets if you don't LISTEN TO MAMA.) - From there on, fear will be a governing factor in your JW life. Fear of falling short of the mark, that your "works" won't be enough to assure your salvation. Fear of never making it past Mic handler. Fear that in even the pettiest things "Did I make the right Christian choice? We all know that "Christian" means the Society view.
Not to mention the fear generated by the spectre of shunning should
we choose not to LISTEN TO MAMA.
Fear is a normal part of your day if you are a loyal dub.
And while the fears incidental to JW life are something manufactured by the Society, to the average dub they are real enough to provide adequate motivation to keep knocking on doors.
The real fear of the streets as it relates to JWs, is somewhat of a bonus for them. You know that when the latest mag comes out with some quotes and statistics about how bad things are getting, then the bros rejoice in some sort of perverted way because this is a "sign" that IT'S gonna be ANY TIME NOW. That's how "persecution" works too...I'm sure you can recall reading some mag article where some bros are getting their ass PERSECUTED and then concludes the part about "How happy we are", etc, etc. because it's another sign. (They must have been delirious when Hitler was pulling his crap...)[8>]
