i've just read at a spanish forum for ex-jw that the wt has cooked a new light article series about social celebrations, including birthdays and aniversaries.
according to a member of this forum 'in short' the wt will let witnesses to decide by 'their bible trained conscience' either they celebrate birthdays or not.
is this rumor based in some real facts or it's just bullshit?.
oh no... first birthdays... ... The watchtower bible and tract society will be the atheist satanist society in no time....
...and that will make their acronym... ASS

well since there is no "betting" (as it reeks of gambling) in jdub land, lets place a friendly wager on what will happen to me when i go to my father's "memorial" service at the kingdome hall this saturday..... to give you newbies background info: i am neither df'd or da'd- i left 2 years ago with no explanation.
i have been hounded by elders in my cong because they have suspicions that i am living with a man, but they have no proof (well, no proof in jdub land- you know...two witness rule).
after many attempts to get me to meet with them- i finally sent the elders a "cease & desist" letter after one of them spied in my miniblinds to see me eating breakfast with someone (they couldn't identify who).
CHG, My concern is this. You mentioned that you had to get a cease-and-desist order against the elders who were hounding you.
By your going to their KH, would you be nullifying that c&d order? Would the elders perceive it as a nullification?
If so, that means that they will feel that they can pester you again, and you'll have opened a can of worms.
Edited to add: Actually, by your setting foot in their KH, you are giving them the 'right' to have a 'backroom talk' with you. You are 'associating' with other JWs, and they may feel that you are trying to influence some... and they won't stand for that.
Kinda risky if you ask me.
What I would do if put in similar circumstances (and did for my ex-father-in-law - who passed on, and they held a memorial at the KH), would be to show up prior to the services, sign the book, view the deceased, show respect to the family and friends... then leave prior to the first words spoken from the platform.
Of course, you may not be able to do that if you are there for moral support for your mom or someone else.

let me start with: i havent been to a meeting in almost 2 years, i am "inactive" and the only contact i have w the jw is the an open minded jw friend who i talk to....since i left, i have done what i want, travel, get my nose pierced again (had it pierced before i baptized but they gave me hell for it, even thought the bible doesnt say anything bad about nose piercings) and hang out w "wordly" friends who smoke, drink and swear.... i don't smoke but lately i have been giving this friend a ride and he is a-pack a day type of guy... he left his pack in my car yesterday..... so, i am working evenings this week on a special project, and this morning i decided to run some errands.
i was hungry so i stopped at macdonalds to grab some coffee... i placed my order thru the drive thru and pull over to the pay window, as i look for the money the drive-thru attendant says "wow, hello free!
", i look up and omfg one of the brothers from my congo... i acted like normal (sorry but i dont get nervous of agitated when i see a jw, i just dont give a dang) and smiled and made short conversation, while he is tellng me how much he misses seeing me at the hall, i see his eyes going between my piercing, my jet black goth hair and the pack of cigarettes on my passenger seat.... .
If she replies to the text - she should deny everything - even the cigarettes in the car on the seat. Don't admit to anything. Deny everything.
It may be cruel, but make the fella that turned her in look like a liar. Make him / them PROVE that she had cigarettes. It's her word against some junior-elder-wannabe.
Remember... DENY - DENY - DENY.
Personally though, I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of any sort of reply to their texting. Just block them. They're idiots who don't do didly until someone 'reports' what they saw... it's similar to a Nazi-state, having everyone as spies, turning in their own relatives.

The great thing about the SMS text messages is that there is no 'guarantee' that the user gets your text - or in this case, that you got the 'elders' text.
Just ignore it.
If you have one of them there fancy phones that will allow it, then go and block all future phone calls/text messages from their number.
End of story.
As for the fella at the drive-thru - you could still have fun with him... sounds like he may have a thing fer you... you could easily play with his head... or not.

i had a call with a good buddy......still an elder the other night.. when i mentioned generations/overlapping.......he had no clue what i was talking about.
such a good man.......... but it doesn't matter.....they don't even realize what is being said to them; what is being done to them.
a high stature elder in their organization....and he had no clue there was another change..... how the hell does this happen?.
I recently had a telephone conversation with my older sister. She was asking me if I had gone back to attending the meetings. I basically told her 'no, because I had learned the truth about the 'truth'.'
I told her that when I was an active JW, I remembered the teaching about the people who were alive in 1914 would still be alive when the end of the system of things occurred (I.E. Armageddon). I said, 'that changed recently, didn't it?'
Her reply? ...and I quote "Yes, because it was wrong."
I had already told her earlier in the conversation that the truth never changes, so I replied to her, "Exactly!" and then hung up on her.
Some people just don't get it.

Good thoughts from everyone. Not much that I can add.
I like the poster who recommended using a different bible than the NWT. If your mom is going to prove to you something from the bible - it shouldn't matter which translation is used. You pick one up from a neighbor or friend - and use that one. Or should I say - make your mom use that one.
Isn't there a scripture that talks about one not judging another? It appears that your mom is judging you as being worthy of death.
Oh - and I'd point out to her that both of you will die - and she will probably be the first to die, since she is older than you. As it has been from the beginning, so it shall be until the end. You will mourn at her passing. This may actually get her to thinking... or not.
Of course... you could also tell her that since you don't believe in the bible anymore, it would be pointless to use that as a point of reference. She might have a heart attack though... so maybe not a good idea.

ok, quick run down of my situation.. .
1. i am not religious.
my now-fiance was raised jw but left the religion about 10 years ago.. 2. we started dating last march, i got pregnant within two weeks.
Welcome to the board JuneBug. Others have already stated very good things. Be careful moving forward.
I would be very careful with your decision allowing your fiance/husband to take the youngster to the meetings - without you.
While right now, he may be too young, when he gets older... say around 12 months old or so... then the little tyke will be required to sit there for the required time period silent - with a JW publication in his lap. No toys - or coloring books. No talking or making noises - or he may get punished.
When I was married to my JW-wifey, I remember her and my teenaged daughter coming home from one of their meetings going on about how a little one was acting up (we're talking around 1 or 2 yrs old), and had to be punished. Good golly! They're kids! Kids can't be expected to sit still for that long! (Heck! I'm an ol' fart, and still can't sit still for very long!)
Also - do you plan to celebrate your son's first birthday (and others after that one)? You may need to rethink that one. JWs don't celebrate birthdays. Your mate may put the brakes on any celebrations.
Don't allow what should be a joyous time of youth and growing up, experiencing life - I'm talking about both your son, and yourself - to be robbed from you.
Be very careful how you proceed...
