i hate it when the co viits the sister congregation and a hundred publishers in our hall have to change our meeting schedule to accomodate his schedule.
why can't he adopt his scheddule to the congregation he's viisting?.
we are not allowed to have day off but he gets mondays and most of tueday off.. it could be snowing or pouring down rain on a saturday but we are expected to go out to support the co.. even though the apostle paul worked as a tentmaker so he wouldnt be a financial burden on the brothers why couldnt the co work part time on mondays?
RE: changing the schedule for the meetings during his visit -
I think I remember asking that question, many years ago (or someone did). The response was that they needed to keep the CO's weekly schedule as constant as possible, or as same as possible - or some such drivel.
Of course... it's perfectly fine to disrupt an entire congregation of over 100 people, and make them have to change their schedule's to accomodate the one person (well, 2 if you count his wife).
Waaay back in the day, they used to live out of smallish airstream-type mobile homes that got pulled behind their Buicks. I figured that they got the short end of that deal any way you slice it, having to live the life of a gypsy.
i don't know how many times i have heard that lie from the platform.
i have heard that line of rubbish at big and great boasting sessions as well.
the witlesses act as if they get as many toys as worldly people, just scattered throughout the year.. now, i have seen many cases where that simply isn't true.
Yeah. I heard that line growing up as well. Along with the excuse for not celebrating Thanksgiving ("We give thanks every day - not just one day.")
As a kid - pre-teen to early teen, my mom didn't do much for getting us presents. But I do remember as I got older, we would go and do monthly shopping runs. While there at the store (a store that was like Wal-Mart - but it was called Fed-Mart), there would be toys like MatchBox, HotWheels and Johnny Lightning cars. She would spring the dollars to get them for us boys (me and my two brothers).
They weren't wrapped, and we got to see them as she bought them - so it wasn't like a present or anything.
Like others here, I never learned how to actually wrap presents. I can do a passable job, but it looks like crud... well to a woman. To a guy (me), it looks fantastic! Another reason I like to give my wife perfume - cause I can get the nice gal that works there to wrap it as a courtesy (Estee Lauder).

I'm a bit disturbed about all of the suggestions about having kids be at a certain GPA to be able to have/use guns.
The intruder at Sandy Point was 20 years old - out of school - homeschooled when he was in school - and did not own the guns that were used (if I understood the reports correctly).
His mother took him to the gun range, where he learned how to shoot the weapons.
Basically, he stole the weapons from his mother - and then went on his shooting spree.
So - any suggestions about gun safety are a moot point. His mother was responsible for introducing him to weapons. His mother.
It would be the same if he had broken into a residence and stole the weapons from a citizen (of course, we hope that any normal citizen would have their weapons in a gun safe).
As far as my original suggestion - you want the kids to first be inside the classrooms before the klaxons go off - otherwise, they will need to get to one ASAP.
The noise level will be loud - but I may have exagerated the 'ear drum splitting' levels.
It's like... a while ago, my wife and I were driving to work on the freeway and we heard a loud blast of a horn that sounded 100% like a diesel train horn. It was loud and disconcerting. I was looking for the train - before I realized that we were no where near train tracks, and it was a horn someone installed on their vehicle.
The noise didn't hurt my hearing - but it took my focus off of the task I was doing - driving to work - for a few seconds. This is what I am talking about. The idea for the noise is to rattle the intruder - make them lose focus on their 'mission'. Allow the innocents those few seconds to get to safety.
Perhaps someone should be asking the question of why the intruder was able to get into the classrooms? Shouldn't they be able to lock them to prevent outside entry?
With any 'improvements/modifications' to any buildings beyond what is already there - there are all sorts of building and fire codes that need to also be met. So don't just wave a magic brush and paint your ideal solution for adding all sorts of entry obstacles. There has to also be a way for the firemen to gain access in case of fire/emergency.
The question was asked where the money would come from? The question of money applies to any proposed solution. I am thinking that the government (Fed/State/Local) should be able to help in this area - this would show their interest in helping provide a solution.

Jim TX

Ok... I am writing this, after reading a lot of the suggestions and commentary.
Keep in mind - I have not been keeping up with the latest reports from the media - many which are usually incorrect or preliminary.
With regards to the OP's list of suggestions -
4. Have one armed security person in every school, and metal detector entrance checks.
Well, I just have to say that having metal detectors in the school at Sandy Hook wouldn't have worked. If I understand correctly, the doors to the school were locked, and the gunman had to shoot through the glass to gain entry to the school.
As for other schools, many already have metal detectors, and armed guards.
Anyway, here is my suggestion for a possible solution after sitting and thinking about it.
I think that there is an opportunity for a company to offer a solution. Will it be a fool-proof solution? No - but it will be a deterrent which may slow down an intruder.
All schools (I hope) currently have fire alarms and sprinkler systems installed. They usually have hand-pull switches on walls throughout the buildings that can activate a fire alarm klaxon - and probably flash lights.
What I propose is similar, only aimed at intruders. It would have similar activation hand-pull switches, but also have remote buttons that could be worn by people in charge like the principal and teachers. They could activate the system by simply pressing a 'panic button' on the necklace (ala "I've fallen and can't get up."). Deactivation would only be possible at a central location - I.E. the main office, using a key.
This would activate intensely bright LED lights in the hallways and also intensely loud klaxons mounted to flood the hallways with intense light and noise. I mean INTENSE!!
Of course, when these go off, the teachers and other school officials need to get the children inside classrooms (which they probably already do in a 'lock-down' situation), and shut the doors to the hallway.
What would this do to an intruder? Well, his senses of sight and hearing would be overloaded with intense pain. He would be blinded if he happened to actually look at the lights, and his ear drums would be in severe pain, to the point of rupturing (hopefully). Yes, they would probably start shooting at the LEDs or the horns that are emitting the sound. They may even hit them and silence them (solution - mount them behind bullet-proof glass).
But! That takes time away from the intruder actually harming innocent school children or adults. It gives the authorities time to respond and move in, taking the intruder down.
Is it perfect? No. But, it is possible.
Some may be thinking that there is no way that intense light could 'hurt' an attacker. Well, you need to do a small bit of research, as law enforcement is already using a flashlight that has bright light as the disabling feature for attackers. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dazzler_(weapon))
Yes - if there are any innocents caught out in the hallways, they too will be subjected to this onslaught of intense light and sound. That is why, they will need to do practice drills beforehand.
An additional added protective device that might be added could be a 'stun gun' feature with tracking. What it would do is shoot a pair of high-voltage electrical barbs at anyone in the hallway. When they are hit, they would be taken down with a large stunning voltage.
Anyway... these are my thoughts. I know it sounds a bit 'out there', but I don't think that it is too far out there.

cagefighter has been a little down in the dumps as usual around the holidays, short days, lack of clear family status and plans for the pagan rituals like everyone else.
i have also been struggling with my belief or lack of in god and god letting idiots with guns run around while he does nothing for children dying of cancer hasn't helped either.
you can say, i have been in a extreme rationalists state of mind.. last week for my small group from church (the umc equivelent of the book study in jw land) we just decided to pop this little movie in the dvd player and light up the fire place.
This movie was/is usually shown each year on TV as a tradition around Christmas.
I remember growing up my mom and my siblings would almost always watch this movie when it came on TV.
My mom was full of mixed messages. Here we were JWs, and she would watch movies like this and Holiday Inn with Bing Crosby. Other things Christmas-related were verboten.
In my later years, I have analyzed this and have come to the realization that she grew up celebrating Christmas (she only got involved with JWs after she got married and had several children - I was about 5). She secretly missed all of the lights and glitter - and this movie was one of those things that she missed.
when you were a jw did you get together with family or other jw's on christmas day?
most people have off so it would be convenient.
in my mind, if you got together with family or jw's shared a meal or drinks, perhaps watched a movie or played games you did celebrate the day.
I do remember one Christmas... I was probably 21 or 22... was living by myself. I went driving in my car on Christmas Day. It was probably around noon-ish.
You know that Christmas story about '...not a creature was stirring...'? Well, I swear, there was no traffic out that day. I was on one of the main streets near the local shopping mall, too. No one in sight. It was very eerie. I felt like it was one of those movies where I was the last person left on the planet.
Then way off in the distance, I saw another vehicle, driving around, and the trance was broken.
Nowadays, you won't see that, as stores and shops stay open even on Christmas Day.
a couple of days ago, jehovah's witnesses came round to my house.
nothing exceptional in that, you might say.
it happens every day, all over the world.. but those of you who know me, or who have followed my story, know how traumatised i was when i finally got away from them, and you'll remember that i wrote a letter three or four weeks after walking away, ending all contact.
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! You're bad! I love it!
Did you offer him any candy canes or other 'christmas candy'?
so what are your plans for christmas.. this year i am not spending it with my entire family.
some of them are doing their own thing/have their own plans, which i don't mind as sometimes those paticular family members can be straining.. so it will be spent with my mum, brother, father, some family friends and a couple of "strays" (people that don't have family to spend christmas with so we invite them over).
there will be a light breakfast shared and gifts opened in the morning.. i'm cooking up a feast:.
...okay... we're all meeting at LouBelle's on Christmas... I hope she fixes enuf chicken curry...
