HOW do you know what you KNOW you know?
by Terry inremember how certain you were as a jehovah's witness?.
you just knew what you knew was right 100%.
you staked your life on it, didn't you?.

I'm trying to approach everything with an open mind. When I found out the religion was a scam, I realized that I didn't even know what I didn't know. So as far as religion/the bible, I pretty much have to preface anything I say with, "well my understanding of the scriptures (NWT)is ..." I now leave myself open to hearing how others understand and interpret the scriptures. Whereas, as a witness when I presented something from the bible I was pretty well convinced that I knew what I was talking about.
I've also bought myself a study bible that has 4 respected translations in it. I have found that despite been born in and studying the NWT for 30+ I now need to put all of those teachings out of my mind and just start at Genesis like I never knew anything.

Did you enjoy being patronised at the memorial?
by highdose ini'm thinking of the last time i attended, must have been about 2 years ago.
i went to a congo that i had moved out of about 5 months before.
hardly anyone in it had bothered to keep up with me and had mostly assumed that i had fallen away, cue shunning in the supermarket.

My experience has been in going to JW funerals and having to go to my "current" hall that I have not gone to in 8 years and people ask me what hall I go to now. I always would feel uncomfortable because I don't go to any. Sometimes I would rather be ignored- by the ones I wasn't close with anyway.

Another JW "Wicked World "Myth Dispelled....
by Room 215 inwe allknow how wt literature trumpets the unique honesty and ethic of jws while at the same time portraying the world outside jwism as a monolith of depravity, self-interest and dishonesty.
just saw a reality tv show in which a van randomly dispersed eleven bags purported to contain bags of money with tags identifying the owners and requesting a return for reward.
results: nine of 11 were returned..... whether any or all of the honest nine were jws was not stated.

One very maddening thing I have found about the powers that be in the WT, is that in addition to always having that air of moral superiority is their reluctance or refusal to handle those in the cong, esp men who are found to be dishonest, unethical, or just plain unchristian. My father who refused to pay child support or visit us, rather chose to let his children suffer. When this was brought to the attention of the brothers- his buddies, it was treated as if it was no big deal. The things that I have seen or heard of "the friends" doing- even in the "world" is often considered aberrant, deviant behaviour.

Ladies- did you treat the assemblies like a fashion show?
by JimmyPage inwas the major draw for you being able to wear a new dress?
or to put your kids in cute little outfits?
surely it wasn't the mind-numbing talks..

Totally. That was part of the appeal. You got to dress up. Also of course you wanted to look cute as you scoped out the guys, the assemblies being a meat market. jada

What Do You Value in your Life Now that you Exited the Witnesses ?
by flipper ini was talking with a friend of mine on the board yesterday and the discussion gave me the idea for this thread !
( thanks friend !
) and it seems as we were talking the thought came up that many of us when exiting the mind control of jehovah's witnesses we really come to appreciate the freedom to think how we want and be able to have access to other views which helps us to have a broader scope , or broader world view than just the tunnel vision of the wt society.

LHG I am so going to use this- "the league of dowdy women" That is the funniest and most succinct way of describing those women, who I swear are in every congo!

Being able to just see the good in people, not seeing everyone as gross sinners who need a bible study.
Going to the store and not have to make sure that the dress is long enough that I can wear it on the stage- or just wear to the KH period, or buy comfy, modest shoes for FS.
Sleeping in on the weekends like a normal person.
Being able to have my own thoughts and opinions w/out being made to feel guilty.

Tell her that you all sharing your experiences helps those of us who are newly free adjust properly so we can be happy. From just lurking on this board since 12/2009, I have learned alot, and worked through some issues.

Nope. Just skimmed enough to get the gist of it to offer at the door. Who had that kind of time? I think that's how they fooled me for so many years, I was so busy w/working, service, meetings, studying for meetings, etc. I wasn't paying attention.
