Introduction
by dontplaceliterature inbefore i begin my introductory post, i would like to mention that a number of my initial comments here may be viewed by several of you as watchtower apologist or as sympathetic to the views of the jehovahs witnesses.
the last thing i want to do is incite a flame war regarding my legitimacy or intentions in joining this forum.
mostly, i would describe myself as on the fence.

Welcome to the board. Some of the more senior members have already made some great points and I don't really have anything to add from that standpoint.
I can tell you that I was in this for 26 years. I'm 32 now, my parnets were recruited in 1984. I pioneered for years, did temp work at Bethel, was a M. Servant for 12 years. My brother was a Bethelite for years. Now my entire family is OUT. I left about one year ago. As for my family, we have never been happier. Leaving this organization was like the first day of the rest of our lives.
Best of luck to you!

Did You Believe That The World Adored JW's?
by mentallyfree31 inas a jw, i always believed that the outside world adored us.
i knew that many people didn't care for us, and didn't believe our teachings, but i thought our conduct was a "bright light" shining to the world.
from the stage, we heard endless stories of business people and other non-jws praising us because we were such nice people.

Ziddina - I sure wish I had seen that side at an early age. Maybe I would have awakened sooner.. I was completely in the bubble for most of the 26 years.
Outlaw - LOL, very true. It changes with every talk.

Great work Paul! This is excellent.
The only suggestion I have is on your last part, you could throw in the statement where they said "we never claimed definitely that 1914 would be the end".
But it looks great. I saved a copy for helping others. Thanks for putting this together.

Awake magazine 1973 The Dangers of playing Chess!! Why it's Evil.
by Witness 007 inawake 1973 3/22 p.12 "...the spirit of competion between players can lead to unplesant circumstances...most families manage to keep the conflicts that arise in games to the chess board.
but in some homes tensions linger long after checkmate.
chess has been a game of war since it originated...a play substitute for the art of war....a danger of stirring up competition with one another even developing hostility towards another, something the bible warns christians to avoid doing...what effect does chess have upon one?

No wonder I turned "apostate". I was the second place Chess champion at my high school. Evidenty, I was under the influence of Satan, aka Beelzebub.

From the stage, we heard endless stories of business people and other non-jws praising us because we were such nice people. The conventions presented example after example (in the concluding talks usually) of comments made by local people that seemed to think we were God's chosen ones.
Did you feel the same way as a JW?
I realize now that by using "Information Control", they fed us a very unbalanced stream of information, and this isn't true. As a non-jw for the last year, I find that there are plenty of negative perceptions floating around too.

What Was Your Attitude When A Householder Slammed The Door In Your Face?
by minimus indid you get angry?
feel pity?
not care?.
-
mentallyfree31
It always affected me and made me feel bad. I guess I kinda took it personal. If I knew the householder would be rude, I would try to find a way to avoid taking that door. And if somebody got irate and told us to never come back, it really hit me hard. I guess that only happened a dozen or so times in 26 years, but I can remember most all of them.

It doesn't matter if the number rises to 13,000 next year. Mind control dictates the following in the jw mind:
Where else can we go?
I know this is the truth!
The light is getting brighter.
This is the only religion going door to door like Jesus.

1947 Awake Says Excommunication is Unbiblical and Pagan!
by Ding injanuary 8, 1947 awake!:.
excommunication is "altogether foreign to biblical teachings.".
it's an unbiblical roman catholic teaching by which "you are looked upon with the blackest contempt... being cursed and damned with the devil and his angels.".
