People Who Refuse to Tip at Restaurants are Embarrassing!

egg and i were treated out to dinner three times last weekend by out of state visiting relatives.

just found out last night that they don't believe in tipping, at all!

we suggested the places to eat and frequent those places ourselves.

I've always been on the generous side of tipping unless the service is bad.

Most embarrassing tipping moment: I organised a work social with maybe 20 people at a restaurant and one of them used to be a server. He made us all wait 20 minutes while the "automatic" 10% tip for large groups was removed from our bill because as he said "it isn't automatic". The service hadn't been bad - I tried to interject after I eventually realised what was going on but as the new boy I was shouted down.

I once paid for a meal with a card and didn't know how to add a tip (too much wine I think). I popped back a few minutes later with a tip after I got cash out of a machine. Got a big smile. It was a great meal.

How easy is it to pretend to be a spirtual JW?

for arguements sake, lets say you walk into a hall where you are not known and introduce yourself as one of them, how easy would it be to pass yourself off as a fully paid up devout dub?.

i reckon i could do it even now, pull out a doudy dress, look misarble, say all the right things and thanks to jwn i'm in the know about all the most recent developments.

My only weakness would be lack of new publications like the song book. Other than that - I feel I've a few decades round-the-clock specialist training for this mission.

i can only say i'm new here in the sense i've just been able to join.

i have actually followed this forum for over a year now.

i've tried joing several times but must have been doing something wrong, so i thought i'd try one more time and it finally worked.. i was a born-in jw.

I also kept quiet instead of asking questions during the study. You must have known that what you really thought would be disapproved of.

I think it makes a real difference to have a sibling to be able to talk to about it.

Why are anniversaries okay?

i'm sure this topic has been brought up before.

i was at a jw graduation party yesterday and realized "if birthday parties are not okay because they supposedly bring undue attention to an individual, why are graduation parties and wedding anniversaries okay?

" they both glorify individuals and put them on a pedestal.

I didn't get birthday presents. I didn't get christmas presents. But I had to go and buy anniversary presents for the parents?

Off topic: I got told I was lucky that I didn't get told lies about father christmas like the other kids. Right so what about living forever and not growing old?

Totally agree with the illogic of anniversaries - but happy to celebrate them especially the anniversary of when I became free

Do you know of any JWs that cancelled their wedding at the very last minute?

i do know one jw guy that was not spiritually strong and his fiance dumped him few days before the wedding that was supposed to take place at the kingdom hall in the early 1990's because he was not serious enough in the "truth", now that guy has 3 bible studies and he is in good standing in the congregation and he is now married to another sister.

i saw his profile at facebook not long ago.

A sister in my group who come into the truth in here early 20's got engaged to a fanatic JW from another country. He was a total drain on her as he couldn't support himself (shelf stacker). She drove him everywhere and was going to have to support him when he moved into her flat. A few weeks before the wedding she tried to kill herself.

She had a history of self harm we didn't know about but the pressure brought it to a head. She was hospitalised for months during which her fiancee wasn't allowed to see her. I thought she was going to break free from the truth. Her fiancee gave a prayer soon after saying how many wonderful things there were for her to look forward to like living forever. Didn't occur to him she didn't even want to live for the rest of the day.

She recovered enough to come back to meetings - drugged to the hilt - and wasn't long after before she married him (some pressing visa issues). I went to the wedding out of support. I'd politely declined the invitation for the first wedding, cheerfully handing across a gift, that was the day before she attempted suicide so felt duty bound to attend the second time around.

Were you suprised at how little the "world" knows about JW's

i was a jehovah's witness for 10 long years and during that time i developed the opinion that most of the world knew what we believed, but chose to ignore it and go about doing their own thing.

then in the almost 18 years i have been out, i have come to understand that the outside world knows very little about jw's.

other than they don't take blood transfusions and do not celebrate holidays, most people have no idea what we believe and only think of them as another offbeat religion among many.. did anyone else think that the jw religion was more known than it actually is?.

Not surprised at how little they knew because I figured that if they never studied they'd not know. What surprised me was just how little anyone ever even discussed them. I never let on to work colleagues I was a JW in my 20's. I heard one person mention JW's - about some wierd question they were asked when called on at their home - but that was it - in an entire decade. Which I guess is what Outlaw is saying.

Zoiks - spot on. Getting a clear message takeout from commercial advertising takes a lot of effort and refining - even with the help of modern media. Some chat with an average dub who's demotivated, boring and wittering away on some random topic will not give any householder a clear view of what JW's believe - even if they were trying to let the secrets out.

just discovered that my nephew, whose parents are both dubs is the school bully.

he was sent home for beating a kid up, he was also caught trying to steel a bike from a boy half his size.

apparently it's because his teachers are "useless" and "he has to bully in case he becomes a victim".

Really good advice. I was thinking it was already a lost cause but clearly not! Just the small problem of the parents doing something about it. My ability to influence, however, is zero. I'm non blood relative and as an ex-JW have been partially shunned by these JW's. Said something they didn't like a while ago and got ignored for 3 years - and that was when a JW so likely to get cut-off if I go past pleasantries.

Thankfully this is suburban UK so no guns anywhere.

The dad is totally an emotional abuser - nasty piece of work - not sure if violent or not - certainly nothing I could go to local authorities with. Don't think he believes the truth - always trying to get out of meetings, ministry and at best does the minimum but loves it as a way of controlling people so will never leave - and one of the most pious people I've ever met. Shocking role model.

Next time I see the kid I'll try and get his attention and keep him interested in something - if he knows there are people out there that are kind to him - may help in the future.

He's 7. Doesn't enjoy meetings. Dad who'd scream at him all the time - the kind of screaming that would make an adult scared.

The dad used to condemn any parent whose child misbehaved - once said "my child won't ever behave like that".
