Both prime lenses you suggest have great reviews. The depth of field with them is wonderful and that bit lighter to use if you're doing a long portrait session.

I'm assuming your Nikon has 1.5x magnification so the 85mm would become 128mm and the 105mm would become 158mm. This would be a serious factor for me. I own the somewhat cheaper but not significantly inferior 85mm F1.8 as an 85mm and more recently at 128mm on digital.

I find portraits are really good between 75mm and about 130mm so it slots nicely into that range. I haven't used the 105mm but would question if at 158mm it's too long? Just my opinion.

Sigma. The best Sigma lenses are good, sometimes actually surpass nikon, often not too far behind although maybe don't have as good a feel as the nikon which can affect how you use them. I've owned middle of the road Sigma which were worse than cheap nikon. Both broke very easily. Sigma is a good alternative because kits cost a lot of money - if you can stretch for nikon you won't be disappointed, will have them for many years and get back good money for trade ins.

Maybe put them both on the birthday wish list??

( the society have long realised that many elders are simply puppets, with their wife's hand inserted within pulling the strings).

I think you've raised a really important issue about doing good for others - I'm a little surprised that you assume no-one here does any good? Start a new thread and we can talk about it there cos I think this is lighthearted thread about female elders and we're a bit off topic which I'm reliably informed is trolling.

i stumbled on to this forum about a month ago...and i'm hooked!!

a tremendous amount of knowledge, wisdom, great debate, and lol humor, which is good for the soul.. i am not a jw, but the borg infected my family years ago, many are still trapped, and i have 2 big shot elders.. i became a huge opposer/apostate and had many a battle.

today we have learned to live in peace...live and let live.. recently, i decided to get up to date with everything jw... i often wonder why my family can't see or figure out the real truth.

Your story of trying to present info to JW's is only something I have seen from the JW perspective and I would certainly not have accepted any of your evidence to read. No matter what you said, no matter how cleverly you presented it I would have politely refused and walked away (although secretly though about it later).

No-one could ever have reasoned with me because I didn't think logically. Thankfully there have been many more scandals, cover-ups, ex-members showing the flaws, recent prophecy changes/failures and bad policies that make exposing the WTS for what it is so much easier.

Good luck and sorry you have had the WTS affect your life even though you were never in it!

it is all very confusing.. ok so i was talking to this sister a couple of days ago and i have known her forever she is a very nice person.

I've also observed fluctuating kindness by the same people depending how they are feeling. They go through phases of great shows of kindness and then withdraw into moods of fire and brimstone.

Blondie, I think this thread has brought out some honest posts and raises an important topic so thank you for starting it. I understood this thread to be about how do JW's respond to tragedy while engaged in faithful service. I want to know WHY?

Anyone who knows the family affected or had something similar happen with their family or friends will be deeply saddened by this accident. My deepest sympathies go out to those affected.

If it offends some to debate beliefs on this particular thread then please start a new one because there is a real debate to be had.

I think it is incredibly strange how even some of the most faithful of JW's will believe something that goes against what the WTS says. I've heard so many JW's explain near misses as the holy spirit protecting them, yet when tragedy does strike it's an unexplained occurence. Why is this?

Is this a consequence of what they pray for - i.e. if they pray for a good outcome and it happens as desired then they can ascribe this to the prayer? Do they want to feel like they can have control over such things or are safely protected?

Even though the WTS has stated that JW's are not protected from harm by the holy spirit even if they are on service, is this a contradiction to all those experiences in the WT & Awake over the years that tell of holy intervention? Is it a result of the WTS's own more subtle propaganda: any tragedy = Satan's fault and anything good that happens is a result of Jah?

Any thoughts welcome

one thing that i have read over and over is to find something positive in my upbrining as a jw and i have been unable to do this.

all i have seen is negative.

Thanks for the summary - sounds like you've really been through the mill. I totally understand why you want to keep a wide berth from JW's and any other cult or self idolizing Eddie Longs.

I asked about your sister as I've been in contact with a sibling who also left and it has been really good for both of us - we're better friends now than when we were kids. I guess that's another positive for me.
