excellent points everyone and especially Ding for posting this! I was one of the kids who grew up in the wake of 75 being told by parents that I'd never grow old.

1969 "fact": You will never grow old in this present system of things
by Ding inawake!
"if you are a young person, you also need to face the fact that you will never grow old in this present system of things.
because all the evidence in fulfillment of bible prophecy indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a few years... therefore, as a young person, you will never fulfill any career that this system offers.

What's the weirdest health advice given by a JW?

This might be a little obscure and sound somewhat crazy but I can honestly vouch that I was told if I was in a car accident and suffered a massive bleed to say "no blood" and I'd receive much better health care. Who'd actually believe such advice?!!

Fading ... and Feeling Lost
by What Now? inprior to that we had been in a new congregation for about 9 months, and we were just irregular.
my husband rarely went, and i would go occasionally with our toddler son just enough to show our faces and keep the elders off our backs, and for the sake of some friendships in our old hall.
all of the reasons i had for going were just no longer important.

Hi What Now?
Intense relationships that we have become used to in "the truth" where near strangers can feel ok to ask the most personal questions are not quite the same when you're out IMHO. Leaving is a big step. The truth is designed to make that step terrifying when in and painful when out. Unless you're seeing a lot of people frequently it won't feel the same - a world of love bombers where you're routinely expected to openly share will not be an experience readily repeated in another environment. That's a good thing.
You will make friends, you'll need to be proactive and they just may not be so intensive at first. Great advice on this thread. These are the tough days - it gets better, much better.

"Dear Brothers!" What about the sisters?!!!!
"Large army of women" sniggers as a few kids heard it as "army of large women"
"Isn't it sad..." how the apostates have a great time while we're stuck here wasting our lives away
"Christmas is just about materialism" - yeah and materialism at xmas is sooooooo good.
"Birthdays in the bible were always linked to beheading or death" yup and so were many of the battles - in fact those holy wars from God were often genocide. Birthdays are about kids having great fun not beheading - seriously wtf - sorry jimmy you can't go to your friends birthday - someone will lose their head?!
"money doesn't make you happy" - lack of it can sure make you miserable.
"this generation will by no means pass away" did i actually believe that bull?
"spiritually uplifting" wasn't that supposed to happen in 1935?

My Story - a (kinda) newbie from the UK
by wizzstick inafter lurking for 7 and half years (is that a record?!
) its time for me to say hello.. so who am i, and whats my story?.
im a born in jw, with all my siblings, mother, wife and children in.

hi Wizzstick - huge welcome!
I'm from your neck of the woods - prime bethel territory and in your time era. Mill Hill certainly fostered some characters. Those same generation thoughts had a big impact on me. I pioneered and it all made sense in terms of the last days and generation. I slowly faded like it sounds you've been doing.
hope the wife is ok.

payback? bitterly upset....
by losingit ini don't even know where to start.. more than anything, i'd like to say that i am not a woman of vengeance.
i am very much a forgiving person.
if you say "i'm sorry," and you're genuine, i can move on from it quickly and easily.
-
MMXIV
It's a terrible thing you've gone through. you'll never get payback though, you cannot win in their twisted world. Ignore them and you remove their power. Your life now isn't about getting even it's about enjoying your freedom. Channel the energy into rebuilding your life. Your kids will respond to a successful role model far more than a dad who makes them attend boring meetings. Enjoy your revenge in every xmas, every birthday, every piece of materialism, every cleverly placed question you ask your kids. Peace

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME.....let's rebuild!
by Terry inokay we've all beat our chest, lamented and throttled the dead horse of aawa.. time to move on!.
i suggest those of us on j-w.n who care about creating something the right way take the trouble to get the framework going.. let's do the grunt work and get the nattering, debates, naming and organizing already pre-approved so that "others" who have the talent, ability, motivation and resources can move in and turn the key!.
because it was not done before.. there is more wisdom on this discussion board in our vast numbers than there could possibly be in a virtual boardroom with 8 people brain-storming.. that isn't an insult--it is just a statistical fact!.

MMXIV
Terry this is promising.
What has made JWN so successful is we can be anonymous (the vast majority are) and that nothing is required of us (apart from the mods!). We give freely when we want and are able.
We have a collective intelligence for smelling out the bullsh1t lies of the WBTS. TTATT. I'm sure we can achieve more than has already been achieved.

Those who went to University whilst being a JW
by MMXIV ini've read a number of posts in the brief couple of years i've been on jwn of those that were brave enough to go to university whilst being a jw.. clearly this is a small fraction of those that wanted to go but couldn't or had the grades to go but accepted pioneering instead.. for those that did go to uni despite all the advice and pressure, why did you go?
what was the response when you broke the news?
how did it affect your relationships?

ecan6,
I’m not sure I would have remained a virgin
you're probably right although in my no-doubt unusual experience I expected to be laid by the first worldly girl I happened to be alone with because that is what I was told. It didn't happen much to my great disappointment.
LongHairGal,
you're so right but in our younger years especially when born-in the opinion of those in the congregation seems so important. In my congregation when our PO gave the nod to say it was ok to go to uni if you were a deeply unhappy pioneer and continued to go to all the meetings then the floodgates opening - lots went to Uni. But the comments were scathing at assemblies and at meetings some would be personally insulting about it. hose who were popular were fine, those unpopular were treated like lepers.
Mum,
That is so sad. It sounds like finances were an issue in more than just studying but thank goodness you had non-JW family that cared. I hope your health is ok and that your education has been useful considering the new system hasn't yet given you a chance to teach your English (don't worry it's just around the corner)!
Doc,
The threat of taking away priveledges is often empty because it's already too late by then.
Vidiot,
In the UK some places gave you hell for getting an education, other places just kind of ignored you.

wisdomfrombelow - safety in numbers?
A small group of JW's who act / think alike can do a lot to reverse the power in JW-world. I happened to be in a group that travelled and we were left alone because we were confident and visited congregations when we travelled. Also as you say when you haven't grown up somewhere they have a lot less power. Did you all go back to a full JW life afterwards?

Rub a Dub - good advice - taking courses were sometimes even recommended by the society (if it helped getting employment to pioneer) and viewed very differently to "going to university".
Gingerbread - so you got taken off all meaningful priveledges (even sisters are allowed to do landscaping so can't really be called a priveledge) - hope you managed to handle your new found eligibility as fine marriage material!
So anyone thinking it's impossible to go to Uni - receptive parents, commuting to Uni and going to meetings seems a tolerated method of getting a degree errr I mean taking some college courses ;-)
