What was it about Bethel that woke you up?

one the how many exbethelites thread it was mentioned that some think one either leaves down the path towards apostasy or as a 100% true believer.

i'm curious what experiences did you face at bethel that woke you up (or started to at least)?.

Usually it was hearing the elevator ring twice as it was being loaded up at about 6:50 in the morning...I lived on the 10th floor of 107 right across from the elevator. Then it was, "oh shit!" and a mad scramble to get dressed, pick up my room and run down to the 30 building to slide into my seat right beside the table head. Then his look of disdain in my direction as I poured me a cup of coffee....but it probably was the coffee that woke me up.

LOL

Seriously though...It was the politics of Bethel that really made me start thinking. The rules too! Rules for everything!

What rumors have you heard about yourself since leaving?

good morning all,.

i have had the opportunity over the last couple of years to speak with a couple of jw's who had either attended the same congregation i did or were married to someone who to the same one.

for the record, i disassociated myself in 1992 due to being followed around by an elder or two who had heard that i had ray franz's "crisis of conscience" in my possession.

Here is the rumors about my wife and I:

'I'm weak...and didn't want to stand up to my 'Apostate' wife'

'They were offended by the elders'

They went off the deep end

They joined a church

They started a new church

They just disappeared

They are having marriage troubles (never true)

They started their own 'Anti JW' group

Ever since I came back from Bethel they could tell 'something was different about him' - (after bethel...I was a 'true believer' still for the next 12 years...and a M.S. and Elder...I truly believed!)

He never made the truth his own

It was never in his heart

They have demon problems (my mom started that one)

He has problems with the organization...(this one is TRUE) lol

It all started because my wife read 'Twilight'! That's a gateway to the demons. smh

I always had a free spirit and didn't respect authority

I disassociated myself...(which I didn't)

We drove around in Halloween costumes (nope...we walked)

'We act like nothing is wrong when we see people from the hall...that shows how bold you get when you leave Jehovah'

Celebrate the holidays (true)

That one Assembly I was giving the baptism talk and just walked off the stage and never returned...(not true...but I wish it was)

That's just in the last 2 years from what I've heard...LOL GEEZ!

the following is an extract from something i wrote 16 years ago soon after leaving the watchtower.

i am posting it because it may help honest jws consider how far their beliefs are at odds with new testament christians.

if they have "the truth" then their attitude to jesus ought to reflect that of the apostles.

Thanks Cofty. I'm meeting with my dad on Thursday...I don't know how the conversation will go...but if he tries to take it 'there', then this might be the direction I steer it.

It'll be the first time in about 18 months that I've seen him. Anxious and a bit nervous, but I'm really looking forward to it...with zero expectations. ;)

70 JWs in horrific crash on way to a Convention

entire family, 20 others die in fatal accidenttragedy struck weekend in akwa ibom state as a man, his wife and all their children, as well as more than 20 others, all members of the jehovahs witness church, perished in a fatal road accident which occurred, friday, along the utu etim ekpo road in etim ekpo local government area of the state.. forty other members of the church sustained varying degrees of injuries following in the crash which occurred on their way to the jehovahs witness annual convention ground in ikot ekpene local government area of the state.. thisdays gathered that more than 70 members of the church had hired a lorry to convey them from ukanafun local government area to ikot ekpene for the annual district convention which began on friday and billed to end today (sunday) but the journey ended half way with many members of the church dying on the road in the accident.. eyewitnesses alleged that the driver of the lorry conveying the church members to the venue of the convention lost control of the vehicle when he got to utu etim ekpo, the junction opposite the local government secretariat, and hit the stone used to construct the roundabout, thus resulting in the lorry somersaulting, leaving many of its passengers and others wounded.. the corpses and those injured in the accident were said to have been taken to neighbouring hospitals and mortuaries.. one of the eyewitnesses, mr. friday john, said the people who died may have been more than what was seen because a whole family including parents and their children were all trapped in the accident.. we were all here discussing when suddenly the lorry appeared and was looking like the driver had lost control of it.

then the lorry drove straight and hit the stone and somersaulted into the gutter.. many people died, more than 18. in fact, we couldnt count the number because there were many corpses, including husband, wife and children and they were all taken to the mortuary in various hospitals near etim ekpo here, john explained.. in another narration, a secondary school teacher in eka uruk eshiet etim ekpo, mr. ndipmo nkanta, said the lorry boarded by the deceased and the injured passengers was not meant for passengers but goods only.. he blamed the accident on poverty , arguing that if there was a better alternative, such casualties wouldnt have been recorded, especially as they were going to worship god.. the public relations officer of the federal road safety corps, frsc, in the state, mr. godsgift uwen, blamed the incident on over-speeding and overloading by the driver of the lorry.. he said the lorry was not supposed to carry any passenger as it was a meant for goods only but the driver stubbornly used it as a passengers vehicle, which led to the sad incident.. he advised against rush and drunken driving, especially in the yuletide, noting that these are some of the major causes of accidents on the roads..

Born into the cult here too!

Funny thing though is both my wife and I said when we would go door to door...'we would never have chosen this faith if our parents and grandparents hadn't!'

Research it we would have, it would have been obvious that it was a mind control group/ cult and we would have said 'NO THANKS!'

The ONLY way I could rationalize the things that happened in the Bible (Abraham willing to sacrifice his son, killing people only because they weren't Isrealites...list goes on and on) was because I was a JW and I believed God to be a God of love and I better not question him. (Which in itself is completely wrong...I mean if he is a God of Love then ANY questioning I have at all...should be ok with him. But that is neither here nor there)

Once the Blinders came off with regard to the TTATT, what did that leave me with? I had been lied to my whole life! If the JWs could change the Bible to fit their beliefs, then why couldn't someone else? It still left all the things that happened in the bible that IMO a 'God of Justice, Love, Wisdom and Power' would never do...

Therefore, it isn't that big a jump from being a JW to then deciding everything is a farce and simply a means for controlling the masses. Is there a God? It takes faith to believe that...and sadly...my faith in God is what that religion has taken away from me. Part of me WANTS to believe...but because of them I don't know if that will ever be possible again.

Does anybody else feel that way?
