Mickey Mouse-I didn't know anyone who got assembly presents but maybe they did. My parents actually made me watch the contribution boxes with one of them on all the breaks of one assembly when I was 8. So I had no opportunity to move each assembly day other than walking from my chair to the box. I had tears running down my face every day sitting at the box. People at the assembly mainly gave me mean looks like I was misbehaving for crying. I did know one family who bribed their kids to behave with gifts.

Elgiard-your post made me think of something. I think some people are attracted to this religon because it's a great way to hide neglect and abuse. They have all these ready made excuses for isolating their family and other behaviors. The types that are attracted to this religon for that reason are narcissists. It's not surprising when these kinds of parents leave the religon when they're children are grown. The religon doesn't serve as many purposes for them anymore. Although, some will stay indefinitely because perhaps just the idea of being special enough to survive Armageddon will make a narcissist happy or other reasons they may stay.

My most memorable meeting was the one that caused me to faint from the heat. There was no air conditioning and half way through the prayer I dropped in the front row. Supposedly I made a loud noise. I was unconscious and sweating profusely. The funny thing is they continued with the prayer and it was a long prayer. My parents said nobody came to our aid but my mom fanned me and helped me regain consciousness. I was 8 years old. I find this an outrageously strange scenario.

xjw666- my parents gave contributions to the kingdom hall and bought all the literature too. They also gave gifts to other people in the congregation. So now I think I won't believe it when I hear JWs say that. Although there are exceptions of course.

I see people saying this online. My parents made us tell people tha we got gifts throughout the year and that we probably got more presents than kids get on birthdays and christmas. However, it was a complete lie. We were physically neglected. We never got presents and didn't even get our basic physical needs met. So I'm wondering if others actually did get presents throughout the year from their Jehovah's Witness parents or if JW parents typically make children say this even though it's not true?

How Many Apostates Are At Bethel?
by mentallyfree31 indoes anybody personally know people at bethel that are "apostate" but still undercover?
surely there has to be a handul at least.
perhaps they are still there, until they can get things in order to leave...

Getting a reference from Bethel didn't even cross my mind. Yes, I would think once they leave-don't look back. However, Bethel is such a special circumstance I wonder if the truth of the situation wouldn't be enough of an explanation for no reference. I mentioned employers being fearful of JWs preaching because when I worked as a teen that's what my bosses warned me about before I was hired. Yes, I was naive enough to tell them. I wasn't "worldly" so I didn't know much about real world things like that.

They must have transferrable skills. If they have answered phones, worked under pressure doing anything, etc. they could definitely use those as points on their resumes and in interviews.. They could even list Bethel under work experience. I don't think they will be discriminated against if they mention that they are no longer part of that group. Employers are only concerned that they will be preaching at work if they hire them. (Really, I've worked with extraordinarily incompetent people and they stay in their jobs forever. It seems former coworkers were incompetent by nature since they never got better. People from Bethel could quickly gain competence depending on their intellect.)

Jehovah's Witnesses Rescue Mostly Blind Goat!
by minimus inaccording to 2tricities.com, a "group of jehovah's witnesses saved 4 month old beulah from a watery grave" in old fort, w.virginia.. 17 year old autumn stoddard of marion said, "we just kept hearing this crying throughout the whole neighborhood.
i didn't even knock on the door because i could tell it was starting to go under".. the owners of the goat were very happy that the jehovah's witnesses saved the goat.. .
any comments??

IMO it's completely unrelated to whether they were Jehovah's Witnesses or not. It was just a normal human reaction and they were the ones to see it since they were out. It's nice they at least had a normal reaction despite everything else.

JWs pretended to be someone else at my door.
by myusername inthis is probably in the wrong section, but i couldn't decide where to put it.
i was raised a jw and i still suffer effects from that kind of upbringing.. anyway, they said they were local community volunteers and they wanted to give me something related to the community.
i didn't open the door but they put a jw tract through it.. i don't think it's right to be so devious about recruitment.

That's a lot of replies for 2 hours. Thanks. I was raised in the 70s/80s, so this approach is new to me. IIRC, I used to identify myself as a Jehovah's Witness when they asked through the door. Although, I had no choice in going door-to-door, so I don't think I cared too much if they opened the door. One time when I was 14 I preached to a woman at the door whom eventually became a Jehovah's Witness (after others took over the study). I felt guilty to be the start of that because she had kids and, of course, their life paths were altered from this.

I don't think it's right to be so devious about recruitment. They also don't tell people about the reality of the religon until they're already involved. One time on an unrelated forum a JW was witnessing to everyone and making it look so different than it is. When I pointed out some things about it the JW told everyone I was lying when I wasn't. I'm quite taken aback that some feel so free to do that. I've had that happen a couple of other times too. The way they're approaching the doors in this manner makes me want to educate people about what it really is. Has anyone done that - as in following up the neighborhoods they leave their literature in with literature stating what it's really about?
