I have to say, I really liked the line of reasoning you used. The VIN analogy was perfect to strike a note with your dad. The "ruining the earth"/take everything literally angle was also simply brilliant.

FINALLY stood up to my father re: religion!
by back2dafront inas you all may remember, i left the organization 4 years ago - never df'd, never dissassociated, just left.
my parents initially tried everything they could to get me to come back but to no avail.
they've never really shunned me because we still talk on the phone, but seeing that we live on the opposite coasts, i've only seen them once in 4 years.

Meetings in hiding places
by JH inif one day the government would put an end to jw meetings, how do you think the watchtower would get organized to keep meetings going?
they told us that meetings would be held in houses or in secret places.
i dont know of any house big enough to accommodate 80+ people.

jws your comment just reminded me of that recently posted article that warned the brothers not to post the literature on their websites as they would be violating copyright law. If anyone in or out of the org can't see that the reason they don't publish on the Net is that $$$$$ would be lost, then they are absolutely fooling themselves. Whatever happened to "you received freely, so give freely?"

"Won't Get Fooled Again" - The Who
We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that's all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!
I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?
There's nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Are now parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Worldly Music to Avoid
by Nosferatu ini remember, one of the songs i was told was a bad song, was bridge over troubled water.
apparently, it's about drug use.
what are some of the "worldly" songs you were advised to quit listening to that seemed harmless?edited by - nosferatu on 16 january 2003 13:39:50.

I remember at an assembly they singled out Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral because it has themes of "beastiality". I remember stifling a laugh at that one. We used to have the bookstudy at our place and the PO conducted it. My CDs we in plain sight in a giant tower including provacative band names like "Alice In Chains". He was pretty cool though, he didn't just assume something negative about things. Saw how I had some Eric Clapton and asked to borrow it. I gladly obliged.

Questions to ponder - Apostacy
by JoeSomebody ina couple questions came to mind as i read some posts.
i know many of you are not jw's any longer.
my definition is one that abandons the true worship of jehovah both in action and word, inside and outside the congregation.

I have a question for you Joe:
Do you know the history of the organization that you belong to in the years before you joined? If you have not researched this (and this does NOT mean the Proclaimers book) then you have some dismaying and shocking revelations awaiting to you. If you are concerned about reading "apostate literature", I encourage you instead to only read the Society's publications. Feel free to read books such as "The Finished Mystery" and lots of old Watchtowers.
Once you've done that, please reconsider your own question about what constitutes an "apostate".

KM Official Explanation of Counting Time
by Funchback intaken from page 8 of the december 2002 kingdom ministry.
sorry, i don't have a scanner.
do you contribute to an accurate report?.

Excellent insights Funch. I amazes me how 7 years removed from this crap how blatantly offensive articles like this are as they presume to speak for God and talk about personal responsiblity to "Jehovah's organization".
Sick!

I love the inference in this statement:
"In the world, there is a tendency to reject leadership. As one lecturer said: ;'The rising education level has improved the talent pool such that followers have become so critical that they are almost impossible to lead.' But a spirit of independent thinking does not prevail in God's organization, and we have sound reasons for confidence in the men taking the lead among us."
It's inferred that the reason a spirit of independant thinking doesn't prevail is the lack of education going into the JW talent pool! The WTS aren't stupid. This is exactly why they've discouraged PS education for so long.
