What's a really good movie you'd recommend that most people probably haven't seen?
by A.Fenderson inwhat's a really good movie you'd recommend that most people probably haven't seen?.
my personal recommendation: synecdoche, new york.
it's one of those movies that words fail utterly to capture--which really is the hallmark of a good movie, i suppose.

Oh wow...where to even begin!! I'm a big movie fan...lessee...some recommendations in no particular order:
Love Me If You Dare - a cute french film (with subtitles, of course) about a game of dare between two childhood friends that escalates in severity...very cute!
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Butterfly Effect
Mirrormask - probably more of a "youth" movie, but VERY creative and visually intriguing
August Rush - very very good family movie. Definitely one of those feel good movies you could watch over and over plus it has amazing music in it, and I'm a big music buff!
Religulous - bill maher documentary about religion, obviously....I thought it was well done
A Mighty Wind, and also Best In Show - two very entertaining and hilarious mockumentaries!
Temple Grandin - a movie documenting the life of a woman named Temple Grandin who was born with autism and how she became one of the leading minds in human livestock handling. VERY well portrayed and played by Claire Danes who did an excellent job!!!
OH and a VERY obscure slightly kinda violent/graphic movie...that also happens to be an actual OPERA format..... Repo: The Genetic Opera - like I said, kinda graphically violent but VERY interesting futuristic concept regarding loans involving organs....has both Sarah Brightman and Paris Hilton of all people. I randomly saw an advertisement for this and was intrigued by the preview and then I was like "well I HAVE to see it now" when I found out it had Paris Hilton, cuz I thought it would be super ridiculous. But it actually was a VERY interesting movie!
Run, Lola, Run - I think it's a german film....one plot line with I think 3 different possible courses of action and outcomes....very cool flick
ok that's all for now....I'm sure there's a billion more I could recommed but I'll start with that :-P
And for those of you with weak constitutions, I would warn against Haunting in Connecticut. I thought it was pretty creepy lol .....Pan's Labyrinth is also a bit difficult to watch in parts, but DEFINITELY a great movie.

random thought/pondering
by ana_dote infirst off, i just wanna say that i don't know how i feel about god, the bible, etc.
i'm in a major state of confusion, as i'm just newly out of the organization and coming to realize all the lies.
this has led to me questioning everything.. so the other day i was talking with a friend and had this interesting thought (i'll try to explain it as clear as possible without rambling or talking in circles and muddying up the concept lol).

At a 2 day assembly ...the point that the brother spoke about that drove me mad....."don't hug your husband, wife or child during prayer".
by crazy2try ini attended one day of a two day assembly and did ok until the very last talk.
the brother was from bethal and well jw's pay closer attention to their talks, cause that is when some new info is given,,,right.
well anyways i lost focus and began to daydream, cause it became one of those talks that just talks about wasting time.

about what tec said - YES! They even had guidelines about when it was "wrong" to have sex (i.e., during a woman's monthly time)...even stating that if you had an emission of semen you were unclean for a certain amount of time and were not to touch anyone!! If the rules were THAT strict and outlined (which, they obviously were!) then they DEFINITELY would have mentioned something about how not to put your mouth on someone's no-no place LOL
In regards to the hugging thing - BULLSH*T and I'll tell you why. According to the JW's/bible/whatev....marriage is a THREEFOLD CORD. Man + woman + GOD = marriage. By a married couple joining together by hands or a general embrace, it is acknowledging and initiating that special bond that should exist among the THREE. Besides, even if it's true that prayer should be a holy moment between an individual and God alone, aren't married people supposed to be ONE FLESH? By respectfully embracing, they are showing their respect and recognition of the unique bond they share with God.
To say that married couples should not do such a thing is, in effect, MAN trying to tear apart what GOD has "yolked together".
You cannot say God should be IN your marriage and then tell them their prayers are ONLY supposed to be between them as separate individuals and God. It's complete contradiction and stupidity.
Actually, it's pretty effin offensive and I'm not (nor have I ever been) married.
Sounds like that brother is bitter and/or just needs to get laid.

panty Hose at Meeting?
by hamsterbait ina friend of mine went to work in ny for a few months.. it was the middle of summer, and baking hot.. after the meeting an elder approached her and asked why wasnt she wearing panty hose at the kingdumb hell.. she said its too hot.. he said it disrespects jehoobie.. she said "so does staring at my legs during the meeting.".
i have also heard complaints that a bra strap might be visible under a blouse, so cardigans should still be worn.. how do these creeps cope when sitting on a beach?.
who was the gibbering buddy who sunbathed on the roof of beth hell showing off his packet in skimpy trunks?.

yeah i had a CO once that believed nobody should wear open toed sandals. But I sure was there in the front row of pioneer school wearin em!!! hahaha!!
and I have ALWAYS hated pantyhose. Whoever invented them is a jerk. Especially if you're a bigger girl, like I've always been....them things feel like they're gonna cut off your legs! Not to mention the high risk of snags, rendering a fresh pair useless! UGH I shudder at just the thought of them....

Are There Any Words That You Have A Hard Time Pronouncing or Spelling?
by minimus ini always have a hard time saying entrepreneur.. are there any words or phrases that get you tongue tied?.

"Is it Jesus' or Jesuses??
as in belonging to Jesus."
Now...I'm a home schooler and only a self-proclaimed spelling/speech/grammar snob (and very unjustifiably so, cuz I suck at all of it a LOT lolol) BUT...
I believe the "rule" is that when it's a proper name and ends in "s", then no additional syllable should be added. So for your example it would simply be Jesus, not Jesuses. I'd give other examples, but can't think of any now LOL
generally speaking, I have pretty great pronunciation skills (not trying to toot my own horn, just being realistic)....I like to attribute that to my mom teaching me how to read at the age of 3. Most, if not all of my "youth" I was a couple of years ahead of my peers' reading level. When it comes to spelling, though....I feel like I've dumbed down over the last several years and I don't know why. Just today I couldn't remember if it was spelled "ingrained" or "engrained".....I still haven't looked to see which it is!! LOL What makes it even more embarrassing is that I'm a medical transcriptionist and my job depends on correct spelling. Fortunately, there's a specific vocabulary to work with, so I don't have to worry about a ton of variables!!!

Question for the deaf folks here....
by ana_dote inwhen i was an active jw i had a several friends that learned sign language in their respective areas to preach to the deaf population.
i just recently saw a thread on here that mentioned there were several posters here who were deaf or hearing impaired in some way.
that got me to thinking about something that i'm now curious to hear some possible insight on..... i was always told that the deaf have a very tight knit community and that it can be very hard to earn their trust and/or "fit in" sometimes with them.

I was always told that the deaf have a very tight knit community and that it can be very hard to earn their trust and/or "fit in" sometimes with them. First of all, is that accurate, that there is a very strong sense of exclusivity among those with hearing impairment?
If so, that leads to my main question...if anyone is able to answer this from personal experience that'd be awesome. Since studying with and becoming a JW pretty much requires shunning anyone who is "worldly", did it/how did it affect your relationship with the others in the deaf community? Were there instances (I'm guessing there probably were) where you were encouraged to give up all ties with that resource and rely solely on the WTBTS and the local ASL group/congregation?
There's not a real point behind my asking...just a great curiosity. I would imagine it would be a very difficult and almost persecution-type thing to be "converted" if they encouraged (as they do with anyone else) cutting off ties with all "worldly associates". Please feel free to give your personal experience (if you want to) with the JWs in relation to the deaf community!

Question about moving from one congregation to another
by dgp ini understand that, if you want to move from a congregation to another, you need some sort of a letter from the previous congregation.
i suppose that would be the root of many an abuse by the elders of the old congregation.
what can you guys tell me?.

hippie - there is a BIIIIIG difference between being notified of someone (in your example a pedo perv) who is a clear threat/danger and someone who has, say, had sex with their g/f or b/f before they were married and felt bad about it.
I'm not necessarily saying that NO information about a person should be sent as reference....HOWEVER, I FIRMLY believe that the person in question should at least have access to what is being said about them. When you have an opportunity for such secrecy or "confidentiality", then any old elder with a bone to pick can write whatever crap he wants about you and thus give you a bad reputation based solely on their opinion and not on anything scripturally relevant. Anybody with any kind of "mark" on their record (i.e. prior df-ing, reproof, inactivity, etc) is now going to be branded by that mark for who knows how long...probably for life! If a person got publicly reproved 10 years ago but now wants to pioneer, an elder will look at their publisher card, see everything about that person's past and then JUDGE them based on that little card. It doesn't matter if they've had a "clean record" of activity ever SINCE that issue....all the elders will see is that reproof and immediately question whether or not that person should be approved for greater privileges. The system is highly flawed and so easily at risk for unethical tampering. If you're going to say "this person got reproved 10 years ago"....I think that person has the right to know that you're saying that about them....because to THEM, they've gotten over it, they've moved on, everyone claims that God has forgiven the error and chooses to no longer even call it to mind....and yet the elders keep track. It is in NO WAY scriptural.
you know...it's kinda like your credit report.....only certain people can have access to it to determine what offers of privilege you qualify for....BUT you still are capable of looking at your own credit report to see the positives and negatives and make personal adjustments to improve the report.
There is a HUGE difference between informing the new congregation of a potential danger and simply spreading someone else's business. I would venture to say that 90-99% of these "publisher cards" serve no purpose other than to gossip.
If you are not a former witness (which, from the way you wrote your response, it doesn't sound like you are...) then you have NO IDEA what it is like. So don't try to twist it around and call US the hypocrites simply because we're pointing out the fallacy of the "publisher card arrangement".
