have you ever noticed any bands/musical artists that overall you really just don't like, or even actively dislike/hate, but out of freaking nowhere they have this one song that is just so awesome it makes you wonder where in the hell they got it, and why they weren't able to go to that place again for equally good songs?

i have two personal examples:.

hotel california, the eagles.

Hey AF, you remember Johnny Mac? When me and him worked at Wal-Mart at night 20 odd years ago he would let me listen to his old vinyl when we got off work. He'd make espresso and we would chill out on his back porch. Although my taste normally run to heavier sounds in rock, some of the stuff he had was pretty good. I never liked America very much but still get a smile when I hear Ventura Highway.

I do. He seemed potentially cool, one of the more relaxed and possibly even intelligent MS (wasn't he?), but I never got to know him.

I like Amercia well enough to own the greatest hits CD and sing along with it--good times.

Well, I can't even make the bands I dislike the most fit my own scenario. Like, say, 311--utter tripe: every song, every note, full stop.

I don't seem to have sufficient priveleges to update my bio on this site, but I'm in my early 30's.

littlerockguy: I don't dislike that Stevie Wonder song (never heard it before that I recall), but it just doesn't do anything for me on the first listen-through, whereas Superstition really gets me going--I have to sing along!

So, nobody's experienced the original scenario I described, eh?

EDIT:

it's_me!, I had to look up Cracker's Low, but I remember it now. It's OK to me, not a favorite though, but I gotcha. I liked Silverchair for about a week, and have hated them since--not logical, but there it is. Did they ever have any hit songs outside their (I believe) native Australia, other than that song about the water in the bathroom?

i recently watched the movie along with the second part thanks to several people mentioning it on this forum.

i have seen both people against and pro.

what are your thoughts?

Nonsense. They are legitimate because of the charter adopted by the duly elected representatives of the people.... The fact that people generally elect the represenatives to make the laws and government is what gives it legitimacy. You not liking it doesn't make it any less valid.

And your liking it (or whatever) doesn't make it any more valid, nor do all the mere trappings of legitimacy that you mentioned. You're trying to argue that it's legitimate from within it's own framework of value and legitimacy--you could use parallel arguments to legitimize any form of government: dictatorship or whatever. Your argument, restated, is this: it's legitimate because it's democracy. So what? To examine its true legitimacy, you have to examine it from an external framework and set of values. "Duly elected representatives" does not a legitimate government make. Just because it's a democracy (or some perversion thereof, i.e. the U.S.) doesn't make it fundamentally different than an absolute dictatorship, because when it comes down to it, someone else still has the power of life and death over you, and you never willingly signed over those rights to them. What if Congress passed a bill calling for your execution? 'Tis the will of the people via the elected officials, so be it?

Watchtower CD library for Mac?

does anyone know if the watchtower cd library comes in a mac compatible version?

or has anyone been able to crack it so it works on a mac.. i know i can run emulation software, but don't feel like giving any more money to microsoft for a copy of their operating system.

i have just bought a couple of mac laptops and find it so much better than windows 7 in almost every regard that i cannot understand why people still buy pc's.

I cannot understand why people still buy PC's.

(You can run Linux/Unix/Win XP/etc on a PC. And Win 7 does suck.)

Well, I said "legitimized," not "legalized," and the quotes I used were important. I meant it in the sense that for some reason, people believe that the government is in some way a legitimate authority over them, though (unless they immigrated here) they at no point explicitly agreed to subjugate themselves to its whims. Where does the government gain the authority to tell you what to do, if you don't willingly give it to them? From God? Obviously not. So is it then from the consent of the governed? I never signed off on that.

They're bullies, no more legitimate than the mob, but "legitimate" in exactly the same manner as the mob: they'll rob/imprison/kill you if you don't do as you're told.

there's some faces i would really like to meet again.. i don't think that here in the dallas/north texas area, we've had a gathering in a while.. so if you have any suggestions for a particular day?

we could see when it would be convenient for most people.

I used to love the Eagles. Still fun I think. They are great to sing along with, and I looooooooove to sing. Have you listened to some of the non hit stuff?
I hate Steeley Dan, but then they.......................nope, never did do a song I liked.

I haven't listened to any Eagles non-singles I guess, just what I hear on the radio, which didn't impress me enough to pursue their esoteric tracks. Any you'd recommend if I hate all the singles besides Hotel California?

Oh, come on, you were going to admit to liking one little Steely Dan song--it's OK, that doesn't mean you have to quit hating them or anything! Let's hear it!
