Well Spielberg would be the obvious.
But before I even read the posts I thought Scorcese.
Then I thought, of course Coppola, as GF 1 is my alltime favorite movie. GF 2 was great too.
I also loved Lost in Translation so Sophia follows in father's footsteps. She has a ways to go but I have faith.
Does Ken Burns count? I love his work too.....

What's Fun in Boston?
by SixofNine inany travel advice from boston natives or people who know the area well?
i will be flying into boston on my way to a cabin in maine at the end of august, and my schedule allows me the flexibility to either fly in and drive to maine immediately, or spend a day or two in the boston area.
what is a must see/must do in the boston area?

Well, if I were you and had the time, and had not been there before, I would spend at least a day in Boston. I find that the information centers are great and can steer you in the right direction if you tell them your interests. Can save a lot of time a $.
You might be traveling up to Surrey on Rte 1 once into ME if it is an hour from Acadia. On the coast I hope? If you travel Rte 1 there are great little places along the way (along with the factory outlets and LLBean) -- Boothbay Harbor, Kennebunk....
Well no matter how much time you have it probably won't be enough and you will want to go back.
A word about Red's Eats. It is very famous and must do for many visitors. It is a little shack at the bottom of a hill that anyone going thru Rte 1 has to pass thru, that serves seafood takeout. For years my husband and I have passed it, seen it on the cable food channels, read about it. There is always a looooong line of people. I decided we had to do it just once and so we did it this past trip. The lobster roll is $20, comes with no sides, but it contains probably 2 lobsters worth of lobster meat. We waited for 2 hours in line with many others first in the sun, then in rain. The lobster roll was the best I have ever had, but not sure I would stand there again for the experience.
I had been to Bar Harbor many years ago and was surprised to find that it has become quite the tourist destination, cruise ships dumping 6,000 at a time into town and all. If that is not your cup of tea I would spend more time in the park, and off the beaten path. There are many side streets with the names of "Bay View", "Old Harbor" etc. Following them can lead you to some great photo-ops. There is also fishing, boating, antiquing, etc.
No matter what, have a wonderful trip. I am sure you will.
Best, CS

So where are you going in Maine? I just got back from Bar Harbor. Plenty of natural beauty and great lobster. Red's Eats in Wiscasset is a unique experience. Maine might be enough depending upon your interests.
I am from CT, but have gone to Boston many times -- do you like touristy things? Or art? Or theater? Or history? Boston has all. It also has Boston Common where those who have something to say still literally get up on their soapboxes.
If you are a Dem you might enjoy the Kennedy Library - very interesting.

PG,
I totally relate to your feelings.
I went through same with my grandmother(nonJW)....she was so loving and dear....took care of me all of my life.... She had all the family for holiday dinners and as she aged that was all she could do financially, and all that she had energy for....
After I married my ex-Bethelite/pioneer/servant husband (no longer married to him) he never would allow me to visit her, rejected all of her invitations.... He had no clue and no understanding at all. I hardly saw her at all in her last years, and when she died I could not stop crying enough even to attend her funeral. I still wear her wedding ring.
I was angry for a very long time....but then you realize there is nothing you can do to change anything, and you must go on.
The best thing you can do is testify to the wonderful woman your mother was. Be the person she would want you to be. Hating them does nothing to them and only damages you.
I feel for you.

Leolaia,
I have been reading your posts for many years now and you always amaze me.
Do you know that stuff off the top of your head? Or do you go and do research before you post? Just curious.
You have an incredible mind.

What made you leave "The Truth"?
by Chemical Emotions infor me it was many things.
most concerned certain teachings that invloved genders, children, sex, sexuality and sexual orientations, disfellowshipping, apostates, blood, rape, and few other things, as well as the jw's unloving attitude toward so many people..

1) wasn't the truth

Being a feminist in the JW religion
by Chemical Emotions init essentially makes me feel like i am an evil, immoral, selfish imdividual who god hates (even though "evil" is really a religious term, and i am not religious, even though i don't do terrible things, even though i care about others so much that i am remaining a jw mainly for other people).
i hate not being able to express my feelings, not just about supposed gender roles, but about many aspects of life.
i think i am fair and accepting about both sexes, and all sexual orientations, and about many other things, such as a person's religion or the lack thereof.. and yet in this religion it is veiwed as a bad thing, a sin, to accept or even tolerate these things without prejudice.

I don't know if I can be considered a "feminist", at least not in the sense of being a political activist.
But, do I speak my mind? Yes. Do I object vehemently to sexism? Yes. Will I let a man control me bc he is superior? No. etc, etc. Will I try to raise the consciousness of others when there is an opportunity? Yes.
It was only after I left JWs that I read "The Women's Room" by Marilyn French. It blew my mind. And I realized that I had swallowed all that "submissive - obedient - weaker - inferior" shit hook line and sinker. The mindset had almost killed me.
That book changed me and my life and I said never again.
Thankfully I met a wonderful man who understood it all. Married happily 23 yrs this year. We are a team of equals.
