  ex-mormon stories - very similar to JW

  when i was leaving the jws , i often used to read "testimonies" from ex-mormons & was often struck by how similar they were to my experience.

  Many "worldly" people who meet JWs think they're also nice, warm, not at all crazy or cultish, and all that. I've read articles in newspapers about the Witnesses which were very one sided, so even journalists can be fooled. Of course, they just went to some meetings or followed the Witnesses around, who surely were very careful to avoid certain things or put a nice shine to all the crappy stuff.

  Basically, like all groups, Mormons and JWs put their best foot forward to the public (the world) but keep all the dirty stuff buried. I'm sure they tell little white lies and deny controversial things to outsiders just as JWs do so as not to stumble any potential converts and not seem too "cult like." If you think about it, that's pretty much what you'd expect, isn't it?

  At any rate, I've always found the similarities between the WTS and the Mormons kinda interesting. I've often wondered about other groups, like the 7th Day Adventists and Christadelphians. But you never hear so much about any of them.

  i've been chipping away on a writing project--basically, an essay/web article.

  i thought i could ask for some input from the group while also creating an interesting thread.

  if it hasn't already been done to death someplace else, that is.. i'm working on a particular point regarding factual errors in the literature.

  I started looking up the 7 years thing again and seeing what others had to say or if I could find the same articles I'd read in the past. Seems that it depends on your point of view whether it's a fair statement or not.

  This is all good to no, though. Wouldn't want to cite errors that aren't really errors.

  At first, I thought the NY Times article was contradicting what I had read about the body's parts regenerating at different rates--and sometimes not at all--instead of every 7 years as the Society claims. Then they mention this during the 2nd half of the article anyway. When I read about this in the past, these were offered as info that contradicts the Society's claim. Now, it seems that maybe the Society wasn't completely wrong, but was taking the point a bit too far.

  I thought I remembered being told the old wives tale about a missing rib back when I was going to meetings, but maybe it wasn't something the Society said if no one else knows of anything like that.

  That's the kind of input I'd like to see as well. :^)

  Mormon vs JW experience

  i was browsing some ex-mormon forums and i noticed that many of the experiences sound similar.

  people spoke about brain washing, viewing outsiders as being ignorant of the truth, im not sure if im allowed to copy and paste from other forums, if im not please let me know but here are a couple quotes from ex mormon forums:.

  "something i very strongly believe, is that even though everything has crumbled to the ground for me right now, i wouldn't change the fact that i left the church for anything.

  Some folks on my father's side of the family were Mormon wannabes who couldn't abstain from cigarettes and drink. To me, they're like JWs, only their beliefs are even further from the mainstream of Protestant Christianity in the US. I always thought of the Mormons as the misbegotten love child of the WTS and the Church of Scientology. :)

  Hello all. I've been chipping away on a writing project--basically, an essay/web article. I thought I could ask for some input from the group while also creating an interesting thread. If it hasn't already been done to death someplace else, that is.

  I'm working on a particular point regarding factual errors in the literature. The point I'm working on, which could be of interest to others, is that the Society's research standards (and possibly their honesty) aren't up to snuff in the books/magazines they publish.

  I was wondering how many factual errors we could come up with. Bear in mind, I'm not looking for errors that are wrong in our opinion, so I would ask that you not post things like, "They have the true religion!" or "Jesus is Michael the Archangel." I'm thinking strictly of statements that are flat out wrong on a "proven" factual basis, not ones having to do with personal beliefs.

  A few I can think of are:

  1) We only use 10% (or 5% or 1%) of our brain capacity.

  2) The cells in our bodies regenerate every 7 years.

  3) Men have one less rib on one side.

  Would you guys like to add some more?

  For the JW converts- What drew you in?

  wannabfree's thread about being ashamed of being suckered in to the big lie got me to thinking.

  i wish my grandma was still alive so i could ask her what it was that attracted her to the jws.

  she was raised methodist- our family still has a small church in her birthplace, got a degree back when it was rare for black people to do so.

  I was a highschool senior who didn't have much of a family and who was worried about what to do with his life. So yeah, I was vulnerable. Also, my family wasn't very religious, so I had minimal exposure to other faiths. When I went to the KH out of curiousity and found that they had answers to all my questions, I was impressed. So the KH became my surrogate family, my new purpose/future, and it told me why I was here.

  Unfortunately, it was just as screwed up as my real family, my new purpose was really their purpose, and the reason I was here was to never measure up. So the magical whimsy of it all kind wore off after a while.

  looking up all the references is a lot of work - one of the reasons nobody normally verifies these, but trust the writers.

  as you will see, the writers are banking on this, but it is not a good thing to trust the wtbts writers.

  please find the bibliography worked out for quotes 38-51, covering the heading "what about human evolution".. interesting is that many quotes are from the [u]preface[/u] of books, where the authors honestly explain the difficulties and assumptions related to evolutionary science.. [b]what about human evolution?[/b].

  Awesome job. When I was making up my mind to completely wash my hands of the Society, I poured through the creation book and even contacted some of the authors who were quoted in it via email. It was a big shock to find out that pretty much every quote in the thing was taken out of context or was made to sound far more authoritative than it really was.
