Lifest is a Christian music festival in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA
I'm taking my 8 year old daughter and 7 year old grandson (JW) to see the band Skillet.
They are a Christian crossover rock/metal band. I like this band and the music is safe, the kids love watching their videos. They also perform at rock fests (tonight at Rock Fest in Cadott, WI, which is where I personally would rather go), but I thought the Lifest venue would be a safer environment for young ones.
I am a little surprised that my daughter is letting me take my grandson to a non-JW Christian event.
We're just going for the concert, no religious nonsense, although I imagine Skillet will make some faith references considering the venue.
I'm contemplating whether or not to wear my Thinking Atheist t-shirt ..... hmmmm
So if anyone else is going and would like to meet up ....

Are You Still “Technically “ A Jehovah’s Witness?
by minimus inif we haven’t associated with the congregation in years, could it be said we are not jws?
or must you be disfellowshipped or disassociated to officially say you really aren’t a witness?.

I'm, according to JW rules, an inactive JW. I acknowledge to "worldly people" that I used to be a JW, if I happen to encounter a JW that I've known from the past but isn't aware of my situation, if the subject comes up, I'll simply acknowledge that I haven't been to a meeting in a while.

Doesn't every generation (in the normal use of the term) complain about children being disobedient to parents? Mr and Mrs Householder would usually agree when I'd share that scripture 30 years ago LOL!

I'd like to find a single Bible loving woman who will read the Bible to me (just the Song of Solomon), clean my house, do my laundry, make me meals, perhaps give me an occasional massage. Is that asking for too much?

jwfacts.com Have you looked at it?
by blondie ini use this extensively rather than re-inventing the wheel.. paul grundy, the admin, keeps it up-to-date and welcomes any corrections or new information, especially in a well-written article, supported by wt publication quotes.. the 2 places i check first is www.jwfacts.com and then searching on jwn with key word(s) to see if the topic has been already extensively researched or commented on.. don't be frightened away by the material being more than 3 paragraphs.
the quotes from wt publications is are extensive and from publications that are older and less available.
i find it good to read many posts on a single topic and expand my knowledge and sources.. blondie.

When you were an active JW, did you ever have dealings with a pyramid scheme?
by Tameria2001 ini'm not sure why this memory popped up, and i was wondering if any others, when they were still active jw had dealings with a pyramid scheme involving other witnesses in the organization?
at the time it was 1993, and my husband and i were still newlyweds.
once in a while, we would attend a neighboring congregation because that was where he grew up, and some of his family was still attending there at the time.

An elder friend from a former congregation suckered me into STS (Strategic Telecom Systems) prepaid long distance cards. I would start the other "leg" in my new congregation.
LOL.
I was given a talking to by an elder in my new congregation to cease and desist.
I hated it! What a joke. I was approached by the same elder friend about a couple of other MLM's over the years.. No thanks!

How convenient that everyone can be categorized as one or the other.

When I was going through my obvious change in participation and meeting attendance, an older elder friend asked if he could meet with me, just the two of us.
We met for coffee at a local restaurant, I figured a public setting was much better.
In my case, I already knew that I would have to be cautious in the way I said things as I had already had private conversations with a couple of elder friends and had been given advice here on this site.
I guess you could say I've successfully faded, although I'm not living anything in secret in my opposition to my former faith and my wife still is a believer.
It seems that the longer you go without making a scene, once you've gone long enough for the elders to stop trying to shepherd you in some way, they just let you go as long as you aren't an obvious threat to others. At least that's how it's been for me.
JW's have an art of double speak and misdirection. Use that when talking to an elder. Don't say things in a way they can be taken as a direct statement.
Talk in a way like you have questions about something, but don't commit to an answer. I made a comment about not understanding something about the faithful slave and gave details, the elder then asked if I believed it was God's organization ... I only reaffirmed that I just didn't understand this point for whatever reasons.
Unless you are sure because this elder confides in you that he is with you, treat him as any other JW elder. His goal is to bring you back, but if you show yourself to be a threat, judicial action is a very likely outcome.
Welcome and best wishes.
