Nicolaou from Buckinghamshire, England: Greetings and felicitations! It's the voice of Christ, not the voice of God. Two separate persons. And 'no offense' is taken. --Inkie from across the Pond.

SBC: To qoute you,
"But, wait, since those acts are incompatible with the concept of a god of love and that constitues one (of many) massive contradictions, I don't think the bible was written by a benevolent creator at all! So to answer your question I don't think god or christ condone rape anymore than Allah condones it." (Emphasis mine.)
And there you have it! C'est simple.

"This thread brings up one of my main problems with Christianity. I believe it encourages delusional behavior and psychologically unhealthy ways of thinking." (Emphasis mine.)
I could not agree with you more.

LWT:
Have you seen how each unique brand of faith relies on Scripture to support their beliefs?
Yes, I have.
Must one rely on personal revelation/Holy Spirit to know what is proper worship?
Well . . . that IS what the Master is purported to have said, yes? I mean, it is written even so, is it not?

Nothing like a book that condones rape and the slaughtering of innocent children to put me off.
SBC:
I totally get that, truly.
However, let me ask you, SBC: Your use of the word “condone” is interesting. What actually does that word mean? If I understand it, and I believe I do, it means: “to pardon or overlook voluntarily; especially to treat as trivial , harmless, or of no importance.”
Actually, the Bible doesn’t “do” anything. It can’t “condone” anything. It’s just writing, as in this case, that describes events. It doesn’t condone. It doesn’t approve or disapprove. It’s a book. In truth, people take what is written to influence and put a spin on what is written.
Now, while the book (the Bible) may or may not do what you attribute it to do, do you believe that God or his Christ do that?

Inkie -- Why do you think people read the same Bible and yet reach so many different conclusions? Is it because Satan has blinded their minds?
LWT:
Actually, there are a number of reasons. Certainly Satan blinding their minds is one of them. Another one is because many people prefer to have their ‘ears tickled.’ Yes? Another because they like being told what to believe and do by those who have arrogated religious authority to themselves. Another is because they ‘lean on their own understanding’ rather than listening to the Christ.

SBC:
When I said/wrote what I said/wrote, I wasn’t necessarily talking about believing in what was written (that’s another topic). I was talking about regardless of whether you believe what it says, youshouldafter years of studying the book, at least know what it DOES SAY. That’s what I meant.
It astounds me that people—after years of studying this book—do not know what it does say, regardless of whether they believe it.
That’s all I’m saying.

Fortunately for everyone, as LeavingWT said,
“Ignorance need only be a temporary condition.”
Everyone is ignorant about something. No one knows everything. So being called “ignorant” because one IS ignorant of something is not necessarily a denigrating term. That ignorance can be fixed. It’s just an adjective that describes something, describes a certain type of a state of being. And when people have spent years supposedly studying a certain subject, n this case—the Bible—you’d think that after years of such study that that person would pretty much know a lot about that subject. I am learning that this is NOT the case, to my surprise and perplexity. Oh well. . . .
Certainly, you all can choose to be offended about being called “ignorant”; but, as I stated, I meant no offense by it.
I am reminded of another biblical text that states: “The taking of offense is what rests in the heart of the stupid ones.” Or something like that. I’m just saying this is a biblical verse that I was reminded of because of what we here are discussing. I’m not calling you guys anything. But, if the shoe fits, only you would know.

But if you do subscribe to Christianity, then you should know that God (or the Lord or His messenger, call it whatever) doesn't make sure you feed the dog and mail your packages. While those might be highly important things to you, I would hope God is telling some drunk heathen atheist not to swerve and kill that grandmother with his Buick.
OT:
Just so you know, OT, I do not subscribe to Christianity. I hope that is made plain and clear to you here. To use your word, I “subscribe” to Jah’s Son, the Christ. Quite a different thing from Christianity. Okay?
If I read your post correctly, you say that “God . . . doesn’t make sure [I] feed the dog or mail [my] packages.” Do I understand that correctly? In THAT post, OT, I stated that the Voice said to me to remove the headphones because my wife was going to say something to me. Is that clear? The Voice told me to listen to my wife—regardless of what she was going to say. Is that clear? It was my wife who was concerned about ‘feeding the dog’ and about the ‘mailing of a package.’
Incidentally, just so YOU know, Jah is concerned about the feeding and care of animals. Did you not know this? Is the care of animals less important than the care for people? Seriously? There is ‘no superiority of man over the beast,’ OT. Do you not know this? ‘All have the same spirit.’ The care for animals is just as important as care for humans, OT. I am perplexed that you seem not to know this fact and use such interest in caring for animals to denigrate me and/or my wife and especially my God and his Christ.
But, oh well . . .
And as for your last comment:
I would hope God is telling some drunk heathen atheist not to swerve and kill that grandmother with his Buick.
God has said so. (Shaking my head in disbelief of you. . . .)

LeavingWT:
Believers can either (1) respect/accept some sort of authority (Vatican, WT, Billy Graham, etc)
Our Lord said that such religious “authority” has been arrogated by them. He said ‘to leave them alone. Blind guides is what they are and into a pit they will fall.’ Do YOU want to fall into that same pit?
or (2) feel that's it's a personal thing, with each person knowing what it means to be a Christian and follow Jesus.
Indeed! It is a personal thing as ‘He calls his own out personallyby name.’ He says so himself.
Among the individuals who feel it's a personal thing, we observe massive disagreements with mutually exclusive beliefs.
You forget, sir/madam, that in a large house with many servants, the Master of the house gives directives as he so chooses to whichever of his servants whom he chooses. Said another way, not all servants are given the same directives.
It's as clear as mud, to outsiders.
Exactly! To “outsiders.”
