Lets keep the "X" in X-Mas!!!
by GetBusyLiving inhow do you feel about some christians getting all hot and bothered about "keeping christ in christmas"?
last time i checked most people just do the holiday because their kids get excited, they have some time off to hang out with friends and family, and getting wasted becomes socially acceptable.. gbl.

Christ could not have been born at this time of the year, as we all should know. Why then was his birth date moved to this time of year?
I have always found it amusing that even in the Catholic Encyclopedia it says:
Inexplicable though it seems, the date of Christ's birth is not known. The gospels indicate neither the day, the month, nor the year.
So what caused Christmas to be tied to Dec. 25th? The CE continues:
Though the substitution of Christmas for the pagan festival [Saturnalia] cannot be proved with certainty, it remains the most plausible explanation for the dating of Christmas.
There ya go. From the originators of Christmas themselves.

DOES ANYONE STILL NOT CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS???
by chuckyy injust wondering if anyone still does not celebrate xmas since leaving jws.....or like me do you think"to hell with it", and join in the festivities.
if you do celebrate it, do you still have pangs of guilt for celebrating this "pagan" festival???.

Not here. Even if I were part of a family that did, I wouldn't care to participate. Everyone says that it's all about family getting together and other such wonderful bliss, but I see it for the commercialized reality that it actually is. Case in point -- We've all heard of Black Friday, right? The day after Thanksgiving. Did you ever wonder how that Friday came to be called Black? It marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season that tends to put most retailers into the "black" - black, meaning turning a profit.
If much of the world's economy is dependent on a psuedo-religious holiday for monetary gain, there is something definitely wrong with the world. I'd be willing to wear a pair of underwear for a week and then eat them if Christmas was to ever go away. But since our global economy is so closely tied to Christmas, the powers-that-be would never let this happen. And so it goes, I wouldn't have to eat my shorts. But I'll stand by this self-made bet until I die.

this JW thinks theres really no point in even trying because, quote, "one person can't change anything".
I wish they applied this same reasoning to field service.
That's why they go out in two's...

Let's see....
- Volleyball about four days a week, and on some weekends(tournaments)
- The gym on off days
- When it's +50 degrees out, the motorcycle gets to run around
- 'Diabolically Hard' Sudoku during spare time either in a book or on my cell phone
- School work - but I do this during my work hours cuz there isn't a lot going on around here from 8-5
- Stream KNAC.com during my "work" hours
But as my avatar shows, I wouldn't be able to go on living if I had to give up vb. It is a huge part of my life and who I am. You know it's bad when you have to decide between getting shoulder surgery(out for at least 3-4 months) or trying strengthening excercises with cortisone injections to see if that will help ease the pain from a tear. As of right now, I'm opting for the least invasive procedure to see how it turns out.

i'm curious about whose pic is really them.

Someone from Oregon "ME" - View on this James Kim event
by free2beme ini spent last saturday about 10 miles out of grants pass bring some supplies to a friend who was in the search and rescue for james kim, and talking with people who were looking for him.
being a long time resident of oregon, i can tell you exactly where he was, as i have been down that road many many times.
it is a remote location, at best, and locals mainly use it for hunting a fishing access, or maybe a chance to go motorcycle riding through the mountains.

This story reminds me of a time back when I was living in CO up in the mountains. One of our cell sites was located at the top of a ridge over Glenwood Springs. Next to our site was an AT&T long distance microwave station. They would use a helicopter to get in during the winter. I had four modes of transportation to use throughout the year - Bronco, snowmobile, atv, and an Argo. During the winter, I pretty much used the snowmobile for most of my sites.
At this particular site, you have to park off one of the dirt roads and snowmobile the rest of the way. It's probably a 3 mile ride in to the site. YOU CANNOT DRIVE. Anyways, during one pretty frigid day, I was leaving the site and heading back to my truck when I come across two young guys, their dog, and a stuck Jeep Wrangler. They had been trying to dig their way out to get turned around. The snow depth varied all along the road, but I would say they got caught in about 2-3 feet of snow. There was no way they were getting out that day. I had to ride three up on my sled with their dog running along(and about to collapse from exhaustion) all the way back to my truck. If I hadn't been there at that particular time on that day, they would have been in a world of hurt. They didn't have any cold weather gear, no gloves, nada. Just their jeans and ski coats. If they would have walked out, I don't know what shape they would have been in. And there's no telling how long they would have stuck it out in their Jeep.
I ended up driving them to one of their homes and told them good luck on getting their Jeep out. I gave them my number to let me know how they were going to get their Jeep back. They ended up having to hire a guy with a large snowcat to go up there and get their Jeep pulled around and then towed it down back to the main road.
I'm not sure what the Kim's were driving, but it's quite possible that James Kim thought he could drive through anything. I have two other personal stories(where I got stuck on closed roads) that I'll have to relate some other time. I too thought I could drive my way through the snow to get to where I was going. Dumb dumb dumb.
