  Sad Discussion Regarding Beards

  so both my wife and i are awake to ttatt.

  we are still active, patiently waiting for the org to implode.

  being active, it is evident this is happening as a quickening.. we were having a discussion regarding shaving & beards.

  I brought out in a group of Dubs today, that Beards were a requirement under the mosaic law and how Dubs in some other lands can have them. Silence. One sister was saying how beards are immodest

  Yet we all know that every time the WT flip flops over a doctrine all the dubs change their thinking overnight to fit in with the new rules. If the magazines suddenly start showing brothers with beards and they say that 'New Light' indicates that beards should be worn, that same sister who said beards were immodest would forget she ever thought that and would be praising the brothers in the Cong for their lovely display of facial hair

  Study: Belief in an angry God associated with variety of mental illnesses

  hardly surprising to most ... but it's interesting to have a study confirm it.. people who believe in an angry, punishing god are much more likely to suffer from a variety of mental illnesses, a scientific study published in the april edition of journal of religion & health finds.. the study, conducted by marymount manhattan college assistant psychology professor nava silton, used data from the 2010 baylor religion survey of us adults to examine the links between beliefs and anxiety disorders like social dysfunction, paranoia, obsession and compulsion.. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/04/17/study-belief-in-an-angry-god-associated-with-variety-of-mental-illnesses/.

  Hardly surprising to most ... but it's interesting to have a study confirm it.

  As you say, hardly surprising to anyone who has experienced it first hand.

  It doesn't take a medical genious to work out that a child raised to believe that if they are naughty they will be punished by eternal damnation in either a burning hell or having the ground open up to swallow not only them but also their pet dog or cat at armageddon (which is coming sooooon), is more than likely to suffer some kind of mental anxiety as they grow up .

  However, they have probably spent obscene amounts of money researching the subject and at least it confirms what should be glaringly obvious to most people .

  These folks don't make much sense.

  My thoughts exactly. I don't know what they are trying to achieve here, other than offending Christians for whatever reason, but to me it is just childish and silly.

  As for the billboard, well, it's kind of pointless. It would be better to have a billboard with some FACT about evolution.

  Well said! A few well chosen words to make people stop and think about alternative viewpoints, without being deliberately offensive, would have far more impact.

  Well... I got my 'invite'

  as most know, it's that time of the year when the jws go out 'in force' and bang on doors trying to leave their litter-ature for the memorial - aka 'memorial invite'.. this morning (saturday), i was at the local coffee shop - which is normal for me.

  my wife was at home chilling on the sofa, in her nightie.. i got a text message around 9:30-ish saying that jws had been at our house.. when i got home, my wife said she was sitting on the sofa when she heard a light 'tap tap' on the door.

  we have a doorbell.

  I really feel for you reading your post. Nobody could possibly understand unless they have been through it themselves, and it must be especially tough for you having been a JW for so many years. Your emotions must have been all over the place when your friend, a member of a much loved family who you obviously miss very much, suddenly appeared on your doorstep with an invite to the memorial. I am not surprised you felt the pull back, and of course this is exactly what the GB count on happening.

  Believe me, if I could beam myself across the ocean and give you a real hug I would. I really, really would. You are a lovely lady and I sincerely hope you get your wish and help your friend and his family to open their eyes one day as you have done.

  apparently "prejudice" applies only to racial equality and has nothing to do with diverse sexual orientation or religious beliefs.

  Right, so the WTS have published their amazing picture of a previously unheard of scenario - multi racial mechanics working and laughing together as equals.

  Do you think we should break it to them gently that an even more shocking scenario exists? That of multi racial men and WOMEN mechanics working and laughing together as equals??!

  Yes, shocking as this may seem, there are actually FEMALE car mechanics of all colours and races who are currently working alongside men as equals!!!!

  I boxed all my books and mags up years ago and took them round to my JW relatives to do with as they pleased. Since being on JWN I actually wish I had kept some for research purposes but I don't know how to ask for them back without telling them what I want them for.

  How do I as a future "Therapist" help ex-jws that won't move on from the WT?

  i am halfway through my master's program in psychology/sociology and plan on being a therapist/sounselor.

  i left jw's in 1988 and i have never looked back.

  i enjoy my life so much after getting my aa degree, then my ba degree, and now i will soon get my ma degree.

  Sorry, but there is no way I would want to consult a therapist who asked how they can help people who "won't move on".

  To me it is the same as a doctor asking a patient with severe depression why they don't just pull themselves together and stop being such a wimp.

  Some people have been so emotionally damaged by their treatment at the hands of the WTS that they simply can't toughen up and move on as easily as you obviously think they should do.

  is the information on this webpage* regarding the socioeconomic conditions of jws a fair connection to the all too familiar wts quote of 1969?

  does the report's statistics appear to be plausible given your personal observations?

  *even though many others have copied and pasted the article (including the individual who created the page hyperlinked above), i'm apprehensive about doing so for copyright reasons.

  I can remember reading that article for the first time back in 1969 and the affect it had on my family and the congregation as a whole. The sense of urgency was so potent, with everyone whipped up into a combination of great excitement and fear over events that were to come. These were the words of Jehovah's representatives on earth so MUST be right! Woe betide us if we were young, able bodied and not out knocking doors full time peddling WT literature when armageddon came!!

  It is hard to believe they actually got away with stealing our lives the way they did, not to mention the intense disappointment and distress caused to thousands when the years passed and nothing happened, and money they had thought would last them until the end of the system ran out. Many of us young ones who were told we would never complete our education in this system are now pensioners.
