  hello everyone, my name is bob and i am a recovering jehovah's witness.

  i have a beautiful wife and four equally beautiful children.

  my major malfunction is that i am very much a believer and as most here would agree, some major teachings do not line up in harmony with scripture.. god used the help of a pastor friend of mine and together we were able to show my wife from the bible certain biblical truths do not line up with "the truth".

  Bobfleur, welcome! Now go read Farkel's post above and let that sink in.

  The problem with JW's is that once your "in" your in... insta conditional friends that you see few to many times a week. So this sets it up to be a very social environment. However, it is strictly conditional, become a low hour pub? limit association. Inactive? don't bother associating at all. Miss a few meetings? limit association. Get the idea? They weren't friends to begin with. They were 'associates'.

  Solution? Look up some community efforts in your area, get to know your kids friends parents, Do things that put you out in the 'normal world' and expand your horizons. It IS a beautiful world.

  Book Recommendation "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion"

  i'm only in chapter two so far but it seems like there is a lot of good information about how the borg gets/keeps people in the cult and why people who are in don't realize they're manipulated.. anyone else read it?

  I'll have to look for this in my local bookstore, if they don't have it, I need to order it! Books on psychology are fascinating to me, I love reading on the human psyche.

  What is the most secularly acclaimed Bible translation?

  i want to start reading the bible more but i do not want to use the nwt.

  the fact that the nwt took so many liberties makes me a little gunshy about other translations, which one would you recommend?.

  I also have a bible app on my iPhone that lets you compare 2 versions of a list of a dozen on the screen at the same time if you want. Just look up bible in the app store, it's free.

  I first bought an NIV bible for reading and I liked it, but I wanted to check out other versions.

  I then picked up an ESV Study bible... I love reading it! Great points to research and study in the footnotes. I did some research before buying it and it has some good reviews and to me, it seemed from reputable sources.

  The ESV is now my go to bible for everything. I still refer to the NIV from time to time and I'm looking for another one for my reference.

  New Watchtower

  so, i had a witness patient this week at work and she had a new watchtower.

  i didn't catch the date but i think it was called 'why do people do bad shit' or something similar.

  i was kind of leafing through it in an attempt to make myself just as nauseous as my patient and they had an article on 'do real christians need to confess?

  Anyway so they go on and on about how you don't need to confess but then again you do need to go talk to the elders and tell them you sinned...

  LOL! Just simply amazing, anyone with any type of reading comprehension and an average IQ will read that I just go WTF?

  i just thought that i would share an observation regarding par 3 of this weeks wt study.

  the paragraph says in part " jehovah's witnesses find genuine refreshment through up building christian fellowship".. .

  i am wondering if any readers / posters on this forum that still do or used to attend meetings have any thoughts on this.

  the names and locations have been changed to protect the innocent and the guilty.

  my errors are not hidden in an attempt to make me look better, this simply is a presentation of the facts that led up to the disfellowshipping and a re-telling of the contents of the meeting.. .

  Thanks for sharing your experience. Glad that you are out! Look ahead for better times to be had, don't dwell on the past, what's done is done. Learn and grow. What you may have done may have been 'wrong' but who the hell am I to judge anyone? I'm just happy that you got out! Prison break!

  I tried that before. Don't tell the elders about X or I'll tell them about you and you know who. Didn't work, they told the elders AND fessed up their shit. Of course, they got off scot-free and I got reproved.

  I don't know where they get that shit, but I've never walked out of the meeting refreshed. Ever. My mind literally rots inside there listening to the indoctrination and propaganda coming from the stage.
