Also, LV, I wanted to clarify that I didn't mean to imply that "having a reputation as a family man is incompatible with being gay." Only that such a rumor - from a JW perspective- could be spoken to hurt my reputation and discredit me.
That said, I'm from the bible-belt and generally ignorant about these things so please bear with me.

Soooooo, thanks to everyone for sharing your own experiences of slander you experienced. It really is incredible what some JWs will come up with to tear a reputation apart. But now I feel like a moron because I just found out that the guy who left that comment on Facebook was kidding about the gay rumor. He said he was trying to find out - lightheartedly - if we were really disfellowshipped. I initially sent him a PM to confirm but took him seriously in the meantime. I kick myself for that. Sorry for stirring the pot! I'm an idiot.
On the bright side, this friend has been out for several years following a break from his wife (while a MS) but never thoroughly investigated the negative side of JWs. After chatting with him on FB this eve, it sounds like he'll be looking into Ray Franz and Crisis. One can hope, eh? But even if he doesn't, he's a smart guy and said he wouldn't be going back without satisfying answers to some tough questions he's had since he's been out.

sbc, outlaw and a few others have chatted me up about cigars, so i thought i would start a thread for us to discuss, made recommendations, talk about cigar related activies like golf, drinking, and smoking after a great meal.
this thread is for any interest in cigars, what kind you like, don't like, questions, answers, whatever.
anything related to cigars and not related to jws or religion is up for discussion.
I think I romanticize the whole cigar thing. Like, I had one of the best thought-provoking conversations in a long time Tuesday night when my oldest brother and my best friend came over. I broke out the Quorums and scotch and... pretended to be a distinguished gentleman. The scotch was good (though I don't usually drink any hard liquor neat or on the rocks) and the cigars were... I dunno, a change of pace.... but after the fact, it just seems I really enjoyed the idea of talking on some deeper things over a cigar and scotch with good friends.
What's that mean? Is it an acquired taste? I was late to care about beer, if that matters. Same goes for whiskey, which is my standard poison now (in Coke).
PS. NVL is a smart, experienced sonofaB if any of you need schooling on cigars.

when i was little my dad was co substitute for years so we got to travel alot and meet even more jws.
I know (a tiny fraction of) how you feel CJ. In fact, inspired by your thread, I made it my FB status:
"I'm looking for that fine line between being a considerate non-conformist and just not giving a shit about what the uninformed think. If you find it, please let me know."
Bear in mind, you haven't had true freedom of thought for very long. If we figure out the psychology side of this, I believe we can make this frustration and pain fade similar to the way we lost our fear of demons. They only bother you if you believe in them, right? Then again, I could be totally off there.
Regardless, you bring a lot of critical thinking to this forum. I salute you, buddy, and hope you can get past this.

We care what our friends think about us - we're human. What we have to let go of is the false assumption that ANY of those people are our friends anymore. People who start rumors like this don't know us and they clearly don't WANT to know us. They want to protect their ignorance and remain safe inside their bubbles and will use any means necessary to preserve their cult faith. (When I say "they" I don't mean all JWs, just those who start rumors like this.)
You guys reminded me, some of those other accusations were made by my own parents and inlaws before we were DF'd: we are materialistic, one of us must've committed adultery, we're starting a religion... and now the gay rumor. I'm tempted to do Halloween as Satan so we can go ahead and get the "devil-worshiper" rumor under our belt.
BTW, if any gay friends are reading this, I want to make it clear that I am NOT at all ashamed to call you my friends and I'm not comparing gays to devil-worshipers. I'm just going down the list of rumors that make JWs gasp with near self-righteous orgasm. I re-read my original post and feared that some of what I wrote could be taken the wrong way.
With the old JW thinking, years ago, unfortunately we would've classified homosexuals just one step above pedophiles. I hate to see myself write about my old prejudices but I'm being honest. I'm truly sorry for that. Rest assured we've cleaned our house of perceptions - we came to recognize the gross ignorance we once held and we chose to replace it through education and empathy. Many JWs cannot even begin, nor will they try, to understand that.
Also, if any of you... male or female, gay or straight, black or white, Christian or Muslim, conservative or liberal, Jew or Greek, tall or short, Ford or Chevy, PC or MAC, Coke or Pepsi (even Dr. Pepper), Canon or Nikon.... wants to be friends on FB or in real life, I'm all for it. If nothing else, we have at least one great thing in common: our escape from a cult.
