Are we commanded to do that today?
Double standard, buddy. Apply the same perspective to the violent passages of the Quran as you do the Bible.
there was once a christian that was attending seminary that felt unusually bold one sunday morning.
he decided to go to a random church that he had never attended before.
he went to the service and sat in one of the pews.

Also, while there IS bloodshed in the Bible, it is not commanded as it is in the Koran. The Koran is a "hate" book.
Dan, either you are in denial or you aren't reading the same Bible.
Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it. Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt. Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as he solemnly promised your ancestors. "The LORD your God will be merciful only if you obey him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to him." (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)
They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)
If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you. You shall stone him to death, because he sought to lead you astray from the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. And all Israel, hearing of this, shall fear and never do such evil as this in your midst. (Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB)
Suppose a man or woman among you, in one of your towns that the LORD your God is giving you, has done evil in the sight of the LORD your God and has violated the covenant by serving other gods or by worshiping the sun, the moon, or any of the forces of heaven, which I have strictly forbidden. When you hear about it, investigate the matter thoroughly. If it is true that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, then that man or woman must be taken to the gates of the town and stoned to death. (Deuteronomy 17:2-5 NLT)

i wonder if he offered an apology to all the people he helped deceive over the past 50 years?.
Psac, you are a unique bird. I mean that in a good way.
From the non-theist perspective, I hate hearing ad hominem attacks from atheists.... comments that attack Flew - or anyone who changes their viewpoint from atheism - to suggest he was a sellout or not a TRUE atheist, etc. That's judgmental. Or maybe prejudice is a better word.
This is yet another reason why I detest labels like "atheist". Seems to me there's an enormous diversity of thinking among non-theists. Same can be said for Christians: look at the differences between Psac and Perry.
I admire individuals who practice intellectual integrity and allow themselves the opportunity to change their minds instead of stubbornly clinging to ideas they can no longer rectify. Besides, to me, atheism and deism seem to have little practical difference. The deistic god isn't a self-absorbed glory hound. How does a conversion to deism change a person's daily affairs? That's just my perspective.
BTW, Perry, did you send out apologies to all of the householders you spoke to as a JW?

designs post was the essence of atheism. Nothing comes from nothing!
I think he gave an accurate description of all man really knows about God.

Designs, this may have nothing to do with the problem but I once had a similar issue because I was typing my messages in another application (Outlook) and then copying and pasting into the post window. If you really want to compose your message outside of the post window, though, Notepad shouldn't create any problems since it's simple ASCII text. I think.
Also if you're trying a new browser, maybe switch to a different one.

As far as they are concerned, it matters not if you are an atheist, Christian, or Muslim. The eventuality is all the same. So why do they feel the need to condemn all those that hold religious views?
BD, would you be concerned if, in America, Muslims were the majority? What if they held prominent positions of authority and had numerous lobbies in their corner? Any concern for how that might affect you and your family, just due to the direction of the government? What if your Christian vote was lost in a sea of Muslim votes? What if this became a "Muslim country"?
Would you not feel impelled to expose the errors of the Muslim faith to those who sit on the fence?
Take that feeling and put yourself in the shoes of the non-theist, who feels that most religion - more times than not - slows mankind's progress.
hi, i used to be a jw, but too many things bothered me.
this is a good site.
thanks..
Glad you found the red pill. Welcome aboard!

Yes, he was. And so I'm I.
So I'm I?
i've been called a "fundi" many times in my discussions with people on the board, and i'd like to know what your definition is of a "fundi".
don't google it.
i just want to hear your personal definition.. i find it interesting because i don't go to any church.
C'mon in, Tammy, the party's just gettin' started!

Also, how is it harder to believe in a painter (who was always there) that painted a painting than a painting (that was always there) that has NO painter? It sounds like LOGIC would point to the first conclusion. Yes?
Not for me. Here's my logic:
If I just had to pick one or the other based on the notion that something has always existed and, therefore, didn't need a creator, I would guess that which is less complex. But that's just my logic.
Regardless, I'm not an atheist, Dan. I simply don't have enough information to feel like I "know" right now. I guess I'm more of a pragmatic agnostic. I want to believe in life after death and a being or beings who secretly care for our welfare but I don't have evidence to support that. Not that it doesn't exist, I'm just reserving judgment until I learn more. It's an attempt to suppress my own bias.
EDIT: MadSw, I was afraid I'd miss some low-hanging fruit. Good call - that one takes the cake!
