  Well said! I wish my parents could understand that such a perspective is by no means dismal or hollow. They are hurt that I'd try to convince them that their faith is based on falsehood and yet I don't give them "anything better" as a replacement for their beautiful hope.

  I've tried to explain that my beliefs are not based on the prettiest picture but on the best available evidence. A person diagnosed with cancer can live in denial but it doesn't change the fact that they have cancer. Better to face reality and make lemonade. (As you can see, my illustrations probably don't help their perspective: reality = cancer. lol)

  My JW parents "know" what will happen after they die. Rasheed the Muslim "knows" what will happen when he dies. Ed the Baptist "knows" what will happen when he dies. But none of them know in the absolute sense. It's all relative. Their faith requires themto believe with such certainty that they "know"... right? Maybe I'm wrong.

  To waver in certainty of belief shows a lack of faith, doesn't it? So faith, in the strongest sense, demands that you know (in a relative sense), right?

  Hey, Stephen, my JW mom says she fears my 'heart has become hardened towards Jehovah.' It's amazing how two people with two totally different faiths can use the same scripture to support their own superstitious belief, eh? That phrase just pisses me off now, probably because I do have a hard heart.

  BTW, why is your god so self-absorbed, demanding constant love, praise, and attention? He seems pretty uptight. I'd never tell my kids they MUST love me. Isn't that kinda the antithesis of love? Sounds to me like he's got a pretty hard heart.

  CJ, I'm a huge fan of TheraminTrees and QualiaSoup on YouTube. I want to say I posted a link to that same No True Scotsman vid on another thread recently but i'm not sure. Check out all their videos. They are brothers who were raised in a religious household and later became atheists. Incredible communicators, IMO.

  QualiaSoup has some awesome vids independently of his bro, too: check out Critical Thinking, Open Mindedness, and Putting Faith in its Place.

  This is a really good one that serves as an excellent metaphor for born-in dubs.

  while having a conversation at a night club with two guys ( i go salsa dancing at least 3 times per week) i was telling of a story of a time i went with a friend to a strip club but we left because our consiences felt guilty ( my friend was still in bethel).

  so i said "since i was a member of this religion".

  at that moment one of they guys immediately asked me "which religion?".
