As a life long Witness, the only growth in the Congregations I attended, came from Witnesses that moved into the territory from somewhere else, or Witness kids who grew up and got baptized. The congregation split many many times in the last 30 years but I can count on one hand, the individuals who hadn't already grown up in the"truth"...let alone the ones that had a College Education. The only two that I can think of that had College Degrees were both "Brought In" by Witness women who had been disfellowshipped in their late teens and early 20's, found a "worldly" Man, married him and got reinstated with new husband and sometimes a kid in tow. Both these guys seemed to see the opportunity to gain influence and popularity and quickly "rose to the top". They were "big fish" in a "small pond" so to speak. Because they were the new kids in town they were welcomed with open arms and it seemed like they were even more special because they had Degrees and yet turned their back on the opportunities of the "World". It seems to me that financially stable and educated people aren't as likely to become desperate enough to take on the vulnerable mindset needed to accept the "truth". The Witness will tell you that this is complacency brought on by materialism and the precise reason we want to keep ourselves in a downtrodden state, so to speak.

How is it that well educated and financially stable people become Jehovah's Witnesses?
by 21stcenturywoman inwhen i was growing up most of the jws around me were poor and lower middle class.
some were middle class, but very few were upper middle class.
only (maybe) about 1% were college educated.

Anyone remember how he changed that Kim Carnes song from "Betty Davis Eyes" to "Elizabeth Taylor Thighs" ? I think in the Video he was dressed as as an overweight Liz Taylor, with segments of him ferociously gnawing on a huge turkey leg. I Can't find the video but original lyrics were....... All the boys Think she's a spy, she's got Betty Davis Eyes. Al sang..... She attracts Household Flies, she's got Elizabeth Taylor Thighs Here's the original song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Al9blqohNw

This one reminds me of MsDucky's Mom. I can picture her gazing out the kitchen window singing this, as she dried the dishes.

MsDucky..I think I love your Mom too....LOL
Here's my Mom's last favorie song....this haunting melody would give her goosebumps and and take her to far away places. We lost her the weekend before Mother's day in 1989. The following weekend, How we wished we could have celebrated Mother's day all those years we were together....all that pagan origin nonsense from the WT society....another memory of lost opportunities.

Wow...lots of responses to this question !
My Mom was a Audrey Hepburn look alike. She was from Europe had the same soft voice and accent as Audrey. She was tall and lythe like her and made her own beautiful clothes for next to nothing. I'd be so proud when she'd come to my school and the kids would ask me if she was a Model. People still refer to her as stunningly beautiful.
She played Piano and taught herself to play the Guitar and harp. She had the exact guitar shown in this video and I can still hear her playing the guitar and softly singing this song as we lay in our beds. We lost her at 57 years of age and hearing this song does me in...big time.

nerves get in the way of your converstaion.
That viewpoint in itself might be enough to make ones nerves get in the way of the conversation....talk about self induced pressure. It might be better to take a more relaxed....less do or die approach to the whole matter. After all, it's only a first date...not a lifetime commitment.

It was pretty common that the feeblest excuse for a joke, would send a whole row of Witnesses into a fit of the giggles during a prayer.(or any other time really) But the oddest prayer experience I remember was at the conclusion of one of the last memorials I attended. The old brother that usually delivers the memorial talk, was cheezed off because some young visiting speaker got invited to do it instead. Our Hall was being rebuilt and because we couldn't meet there, several local Congregations rented out the banquet rooms at a nice Hotel and we had the Memorial all together as one huge crowd which made it even more of a special occasion than normal. Not to be forgotten, this old brother was invited to give the closing prayer. It was his moment to shine at last. He started out the prayer normally..."Jehovah we know that you want us to blah blah blah... and of course Jehovah we would never want to ...blah blah blah" etc. Not to be forgotten, he somehow managed to segue from giving a prayer into doing a full on talk and eventually started recapping the whole memorial point by point. After awhile everyone was peeking at eachother from out of the corners of their eyes because he had even started quoting scriptures. You could hear the rustling of pages as people who had forgoten he was just praying, began looking them up in their Bibles out of habbit. I was half expecting him to start passing the wine around again.

Abusive JW Mothers.
by Low-Key Lysmith inthinking back on some other posters' threads and experiences, combined with some things i've read on silent lambs, and adding in my own personal history, it would seem that there was/is a lot of maternal abuse going on in the jw community.. brizzzy talks about her hellishly abusive mother.. the_raisin also started a thread about her psycho mom.. my mother was an absolute diabolical tyrant.
i firmly believe that she got a sick thrill out of beating me bloody with a belt, or whatever object was at hand, from spatulas & wooden spoons to cast-iron frying pans.. it just makes me wonder if the wts's stance on women being powerless, second-class citizens has anything to do with their women lashing out violently?.
just a thought.

The only thing I fault my Mom for is it seemed like she was using us to make herself look like the ideal JW mother in the eyes of other JW's. We had to have the best answers...give the best talks (which she wrote) and be out in service even if she didn't go herself. She wanted at least one of her boys to go to Bethel (me). I know she loved us very much, and was terribly concerned ,nearly driven mad with fear about our making it through Armegeddon, but beyond that, our successes as Witnesses were definitely a feather in her own cap. It would have been nice to have some books in the house other than JW literature...but they might have distracted us from what was important. We learned to play instruments...but only so we could play Kingdom Songs. To her horror, my Brother and I learned Stairway to Heaven and Innagadavidaa by Iron Butterfly when her back was turned. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4g-wx2Y_wg
