  Are the JW’s were you are getting worked up over having a to go bag (Armageddon bag) ready?

  ok where i live in the pacific northwest in january of this year this elder from the hall called a special meeting and gave everyone some papers that he had gotten from some government place on what to put in an emergency bag to grab in case you have to flee your home in seconds.

  i thought it was just my husbands hall being all strange and stupid over this.

  one older sister said that the elder told everyone they needed three bottles of water for 14 days that is 42 bottles of water plus whatever other stuff they put in there not sure if she got that right because 42 bottles of water is a lot of weight.

  I'm in the Seattle area and we are always told to be prepared for a major earthquake by having food medicine water etc stored in our homes and in our cars in case we're on the road when the big one hits. It could be that the JW's are getting prepared for that especially since they think Armegeddon will follow on the heals of a major disaster anyway so they are doubly motivated about being prepared. The thing is, how long can you put off the inevitable. That is, you can't store that much food or water, you'd eventually run out of it in a long term situation like the "tribulation". Anyone who appeared to be surviving would be targeted by those who were without.

  Back in the Pre 1975 days. There were people in our hall that had literature buried in plastic soap bottles in their back yards so that when there was a "Ban" on the preaching work or whatever, they'd have a stash of literature to keep them going. I often wondered if some of that stuff is still out there today or if anyone ever found it and wondered what was going on. That would be a great assembly experience or urban legend....someone became a Witness after finding the truth buried in a soap bottle in their back yard.

  Would you rather....

  if armageddon struck right now.... would you rather be:.

  the only jw passenger on a transatlantic jet that now has no pilot and will be crashing into the ocean or,.

  the only jw person on a high rise elevator that is now stalled on the 110th floor without any food, power, a/c or communication or,.

  I don't know about any of those choices you offer, but it would be a bummer if you were a JW who was battling Cancer, let say, and died a week after entering into the New System because you hadn't grown perfect enough yet to be rid of the disease. Would you be resurrected later with all the rest of the resurrected ones? If so would you have to remain single for all eternity. What happens in the New System when a Coconut drops on your head in the new system. Would it hurt? Would it crack your skull or just bounce off? This wasn't covered in the Watchtower so they never knew what to say when I asked these questions as a kid.

  uh, if the super apostate magic doesn't work, i'll just let my huge great danes out onto the porch and freak the witnesses out followed by kicking them off my front porch... .

  It's always a good policy to treat others with kindness and deceny. Inviting them to your home for the purpose you mentioned is not only unkind but sounds a little like entrapment.

  How did/does your congregation view going out to eat AFTER the Memorial?

  for us it used to be a big no-no, but i think it has slowly grown more acceptable since many of our elders would be starving during the whole reject jesus party.... i always thought it was a bit funny when i saw brothers and sisters almost celebrating with a big feast and drinks on the night that the good ol' messiah sacrificed himself for all humankind!

  it seems now more recently that since it is the only thing witnessess can celebrate, they go all out!

  maybe i'll join in the festivities too.. so what about you guys?

  It was never a habbit of ours to go out afterward. I always just wanted to get home in time to relax before having to get up for work the next day.

  As a kid I remember walking into the bathroom after the "service" just in time to see one of the Elders standing at the sink gulping down the left over wine. I was shocked.

  It always struck me funny and sort of "christendom like" when sisters used the Memorial as an opportunity to wear long dresses,corsages and hats to the hall. The last one I was at was a fiasco. A very odd Bethelite was flown to our west coast congregation to deliver an unintelligable talk. If I hadn't already known what he was talking about, I'd have been confused.Two teenaged non witness girls sitting in front of me kept shrugging their shoulders and looking from one to another with puzzled looks on their faces as he rambled on.

  Afterward, an older sister, all a twitter, rushed up to her daughter and new baby grandson who was all decked out in a 3 piece suit so she could take a photo of "baby' s first memorial". It was my last memorial...it seemed like such a farce. Two thousand and nine years later and people were still going through this ritual and awaiting deliverance.

  So what do your Jehovah's Witness friends and loved ones think of the generation teaching?

  after the little skit at the last assembly where one brother was asking another for understanding about the generation teaching i thought, "wow, these people will believe anything the watchtower tells them.

  " the 'more mature brother' practically said verbatim everything the watchtower said as his explanation.

  evidently, this is one of the sources of the increased 'murmuring' that the talked warned against.. so, has anyone brought this up to their witness friends and/or family?

  My Mother in Law is "young" 81 and has been a Pioneer for about 30 years. I asked her what she thought about the new understanding of the term " generation". At first she didn't know what I was talking about,then she said " Oh that.....well I don't pay any attention to that stuff" she quickly changed the subject. It made wonder what she teaches her Bible Studies when they come to the topic of 1914 and it's significance to the end of this system. She's 81so I cut her some slack. She's so steeped in this religion that it doesn't matter if they think black is white, she'll go along with it.

  STD's and Baptism

  okay, so this came up on another thread, and now i really want to know the answer.. about 10 years ago, and elder told me they now ask baptismal candidates if they have an std.

  maybe they ask about other communicable diseases too, but he focused on std's.

  he had no reason to mention this, so i just took it as true.

  New Rumor: Downsizing Circuits/Assemblies

  the borg is going to phase out big district assemblies - so they can fit 'em in assembly halls.. they will reduce the size of circuits.

  Funny....I was just thinking about District Assemblies yesterday, how they've changed and what value would they serve these days. It seemed like in the past they had days and days worth of things to harp on about and information that was oh so important for us not to miss. Granted, the assemblies were torture sessions but they seemed to rally a sort of special spirit of commaraderie in spite of it all. The last District Assembly I was at was in a Major Sprots Arena. It seemed so sterile and cold and it was a ghost town by comparrison to the old days. People seemed to mill around, come and go, pick and choose what sessions they would and wouldn't attend. This wouldn't have flown in a couple of decades ago. With the deleted meetings, reduced hours, downsized magazines, and internet access to their information they don't have enough new information to fill a program. Most of the benefit of the assembly didn't come from the talks. it was just seeing that you weren't the lone religous fanatic out there that made it seem ok to press on. It seems like they are going to streamline and homogonize themselves right out of existence if they are not careful. Can you imagine how hard it will be for single JW's to meet a variety of people without the being able to cruise the corridors of the big District Conventions. It was the only thing that we used to have to look forward to.
