Favorite JW Urban Legends

what are your favorite urban legends that you heard as a jw?.

here's mine:.

a brother, through his work, was asked to give a speech to the united nations.

On his show after one of the California Quakes, Johnny Carson said "They say the safest place to be in an earthquake is in a doorway. If that's the case, Amway salesman and Jehovahs Witnesses have it made" The audience roared and Johnny looked over to Ed McMahon with a puzzled look on his face as if he couldn't understand why everyone thought what he said was so funny. (That one is true cause I heard it personally)

I got baptized at the Vancouver B.C Convention and the singer Glen Campbell was supposed to be getting baptized too. People were running around with their Song Books looking for him so they could get his autograph. They announced in the assembly how inapropriate this was. ( also true )

Remember the one about the sister who had a man come up to her at the District Convention and handed her her missing Bible and told her he had broken into her house and been hiding under her bed and he heard her praying. After she fell asleep he stole her Bible and snuck out of the house. He started studying and had gotten baptized at that assembly. ( Pure B.S ! )

It's so irritating how he keeps referring to JW's as "Jehovah's Organization" as if it's a proven fact that they are in fact directly organized by him. If that was the case...why all the mistakes and changing of doctrine?

Your FIL seems to feel smug about his faith in the "Organization" but faith is often a word that people use to feel OK about having given up searching or not caring enough to look any furthur into what they believe in.

The Organization has recently changed their take on the meaning of the term "generation" which has essentially undone all the urgency of the times Witnesses in the past lived under. If you'd have told him 5 years ago that you didn't beleive the Organization had the correct understanding of the term "generation" he'd have viewed you as a fault finder or apostate and looked for ways to side step any proof you may have had to present on the subject as he has done here. Even after the change in their understanding was published, he'd never admit you had been correct. He basically doesn't want to know.

according to the wt study yesterday, that's what happened.. 16. by allowing jehovah to instruct us and lead us in the path of uprightness, we will have no cause for fear.

when a regular pioneer in the united states applied for a job that would help him to keep his entire family in full-time service, his supervisor told him that he would never get that position without a college degree.

had this happened to you, would you have regretted pursuing full-time service to the exclusion of seeking higher education?

"I knew there was something different about you! When my father was on his deathbed, two of your fellow believers came and read the Bible to him every day.

"Fellow beleivers"...that's Watchtower speak....the Manager...if he existed, never said that I'm sure and JW's would more than likely have been reading a publication to him rather than the bible itself.

Jehovah lives up to his assurances that we will not go without material necessities.

Tell that to the 40 something Ministerial Servant fater of five I know who lost his job and had his home repossessed and became a ward of the congregation and ended up dying of a ruptured aorta and couldnt take blood to save himself. His family has never recovered and are living in a broken down mobile home owned by another witness. His wife who never worked before got a job as a cashier in a fabric store and they are basically poverty stricken.

The story never said if the salary was the same for the JW as was offered to a College Grad nor did we hear how things went when the Witness started working. Hopefully he was able to hold down the position. What about the rest of the people there who have jobs and are supporting their families ? Is Jehovah providing for them or are they just lucky?

the way i read it is everything to do with ivf is a conscience matter unless it involves a 3rd party then it's considered porneia.

My husband confuses me?

he says that he is a jw, but very .

clearly enjoys the attention he gets from others on his birthday.

He's a double life'r....lots of Witnesses including those in positions of leadership do this to some degree or another. It's a form of coping while one is in a position where one no longer believes what his religion has taught him yet feeks heshould believe what his religion has taught him. It's a piteous situation to be in and is one of the main reasons sites like this exist. Be patient with him as he evolves into the fully developed individual he was meant to be had it not been for the stunting effects of this cult like group.

A poignant comment on JWsurvey.org from a nonJW regarding Sparlock

i woke up this morning to find the following comment had been left on jwsurvey.org on my article entitled "watchtower's new 'toy story' - what parents need to know".

it read as follows.... .

my grandson, who is 3, was telling me magic is bad several times a day.

Which begs the question: what DID you tell her about that, Cedars? Did you make a case for telling the child "magic is good?"

Good or Bad ??? What proof is there that "magic"even exists other than the slight of hand tricks we see performed on a stage ? Telling a child that a toy is bad and could connect him with Satan when there is no proof of such a thing or that there is a "devil" is primative and superstitious. The danger lies in ones beleiving that magic is real or from a powerful source.

It's a sad day when a mother can't speak up when she sees her daughter and grandchild about to enter into association with a group that is considered by many to be a borderline cult, without being viewed as meddeling and interfering. One day that grandchild or daughter may be lost to her forever for want of a blood transfusion, another harmless little notion they hold as truth. It seems like everyone is assuming that the woman has been meddeling in other areas yet nothing but her concerns for her grandchild, in this one particular area were mentioned. It seems to me, if she were a meddeler, she'd have spoken up by now rather than have asked advice from someone who may have indepth experience on the matter. I'd say she's weighing her options carefully before jumping in. I'd do the same thing if one of my Son's were about to embark on something that seemed a little "out there".

september 1st, 2012, can be marked down in the theocratic calendar as the day the watchtower bible and tract society marched shamelessly into the 21st century.

on that day, jw.org, official website of jehovah's witnesses, went live, and with one strike the organisation put a match to its past.. .

seek out the society's online library, its searchable database of publications, and you will soon see that it has only made available literature published since the year 2000. inclusion of the generic work, insight on the scriptures, is of no consequence.

It angers and saddens me to think of the countless hours I spent as a child studying and trying to learn what was in those now obsolete publications having been told that I needed to know our beliefs backwards and forwards if I expected to survive the great tribulation. If I'd have known more about the Societies past (Beth Sarim, failed dates, UN, etc.) I'd have never worried so much or taken it all so seriously. Young ones or new ones now won't have the opportunity via the approved JW channels to know about the true history of the organization they're about to dedicate their lives to. Thanfully it will still reside on the internet and lives on through those of us who witnessed it personally.

Remember "Loves excelling way" ?

There was a sister in our congregation when I was growing up who was a throwback from the 1950's and she used to sing the Kingdom songs in the stylings of Connie Francis who was dubbed (the girl with a tear in her voice). The Sister's name was Shirley but we called her Shirley Francis connie francis

We'd all be waiting in anticipation whenever Love's excelling way was to be sung. Complete with pleading facial expressions and swaying head movements she'd drag out the firrrrst and laaaast word of every verse....especially the word love LOOOOOVE. She had a nice voice ...even looked like Connie Francis but her verses dragged out much longer than the rest of the congregation and her whimpers could be heard above and beyond everyone elses voices. You almost expected her to take a bow at the end. One time a little toddler sitting in front of her was looking at her quisically...really studying her and then started imitating her voice by mimicking the sounds she was making which came out more like a dogs howl which of course made us all snicker.

In praise of praise and compliments

i was thinking about how important praise and compliments are and how they can make all the difference to a person who may be feeling unsure, overwhelmed or sort of ordinary.

i received 3 out of the blue compliments this past weekend that for some reason seem to have energized me when i was feeling sort of like just another starfish on the beach.

one compliment gave me the reassurance that i am on the right track.

exwhyzee, I like your screen name, its quite clever. That's another genuine compliment !!! -Whathappened

See what I mean.....I used that name because I was too unclever to come up with anything better. It's true what you were saying about having to be sure and dole out the compliments to children carefully lest you make them feel pigeon holed into a certain role. Then again they have to learn that just because sister #1 is told she is pretty means that sister #2 isn't pretty.

What your Dad said to you probably went farther toward giving you the confidence and permission to eventually use your own head than hours of lecturing and debating over what differences he had with you being raised JW.

Fakesmile I agree, being alert to opportunities for catching someone doing well is so much more motivating than looking for wrongdoing. It seems like some folks are stingy with praise because they think they need to keep others in their place....keep them from thinking too highly of themselves. (god forbid) If they tell you you are doing well they are afraid you'll slack off.

I'm still on a little bit of a high from what was said to me a few days ago and it has reminded me to be on the watch to do the same for those around me.
