Actually violence has gone down dramatically since the 1980's. Even with the current recession, crime continues to go down.

Less or More Violence Today?
by peacefulpete inon another thread msjones posted a link to a video lecture dealing with the lucifer effect which i enjoyed but then found the a steven pinker lecture dealing with the myth of increasing violence and had to share it.
reaserch reveals a sharp decline in violence over the millenia, centuries and decades.
he postulates why and why we commonly perceive the opposite.

Jan. 15th WT- Go to Meetings to Fight the Blues- Eliminate other Activities
by flipper inour jw contact sent us the " witness only " wt's again and i just had to make a thread on this mind numbing article.
starting on pg.22 in the jan.15th it deals with " coping with discouragement ".
it seems lots of jw's are under intense stress these days ( can you blame them ?

Isn't it funny how they'll say continually say things like "Armageddon is close at hand" and "The end of the system is fast approaching" but then they blame JW's by saying things like JW's are "discourages because the end hasn't come when they expected it".
So you are telling them to expect Armageddon to occur any minute now but at the same time they are at fault because they are expecting Armageddon to occur any minute now. ASHT0HAQE40HAW40HT0HQET50HQ30HT6Q30H0HAW0HU03HT0H3W0HTQ3WH0TW40OUT08PUQ4A0PHQ03AT

Hello Everyone...Just Joined Today
by DarioKehl ini've been reading this thread for some time and finally had the opportunity to create an account.
i am anxious to meet you all and have a support group/active audience over the next crucial months and years following.
background: long-time doubter, giving way to frustration and skepticism beginning about 10 years ago and finally to total admission that this is a cult and that atheism is the way to go.

Will there be cars in the New System?
by laverite ingrowing up as a jw i always imagined the new system (tm) as being just like it's presented in the literature (tm).
i thought we'd all be hanging around with dorky looks on our faces, petting tigers and panda bears all day while we eat fruit and practice our dorky grins.. i've never seen a pic from the society (tm) showing cars or planes (or other forms of transport) in the literature (tm).
what did you imagine as far as transportation in the new system (tm)?

Aussie Oz:
Dont you remember?
we will be able to fly about like superman! Who needs cars!
I dont have the issue but am relying on others posting the below to be accurate...
Golden Age Aug 25 1926 p.751 "Negative Gravitation...you may have wondered how accidents will be avioded in
Christs Kingdom....scientists tell us there is enough Atomic energy in one fingernail to propel a Battleship. The
people of the future may carry alittle of this power with them. If they fall down an elevator shaft, they can let
themselves down easy, then they can turn alittle more on and go back up...no danger of falling down stairs then..."
Please tell me that what you put here is satire and not something they actually wrote. Please. My brain can't take it if this is real.

Do JWs Participate in Wars By Funding Them?
by cameo-d ini think there are a lot of ways to get your hands bloody without actually joining the military or shooting a gun indiscriminately at foreigners in their own country.. can you think of ways that jws are participating in sponsoring wars without "going to war"?.

I'm just saying I never listed a figure. I just said I was aware and I have read things about them owning stock in the company. From my perspective, I have not listed any figures, I just pointed out that they did hold stock in it and that was the only important thing.

What video games were banned when you were a JW teen?
by BlackTwisted ini'm not a jw, but i'm kind of studying to be one though.. now that's out of the way, i remember mortal kombat was banned within my home-my mom isn't too fond of blood in video games..but yet, she plays dinosaur crisis sometimes....but then again, that was when i was 9...lol now that i'm 15 and i wanted mortal kombat 9 (still) my mom stil lsaid no...but then again, she would let me play it online..i dont know why..its strange, but hey, whatever works for her and me i guess.. .
um...lets see..any shooting games, or any games that has blood in it, she wont let me get.
so i can still play fighting games, just not the ones with blood...eh, oh well.i'm surprised she even let me play "dead or alive" and "soul calibur"!

Growing up we stuck mainly to Atari, Nintendo, Sega and the only game on those systems my mom had a problem with was Mortal Kombat. I would play it over my neighbors house anyway. Then as the newer systems came out, we could not play Resident Evil, Grand Theft Auto. We would find ways to play them but we weren't allowed. Eventually it got to a point when she just didn't care anymore.

OTWO, is it helping? I'm just curious because I've been feeling kind of depressed lately. It seems to be all combining, not just leaving the JW's a few months ago but other things going on in my life and things that have happened in the past. With my health insurance I'm supposed to get several free therapy sessions and I thought about going but I'm wondering if it's really worth it. Is it really depression I'm facing or is it something that will pass with a little time? If I see from what all of your responses are, I can decide whether or not it's even worth it to go through with it or to just wait it out.

I always thought I'd leave. I didn't know how, I didn't know why I would leave. But since I was about 14 (baptised at 13), I knew I would never stay a JW my whole life. I thought maybe it would be years from now but here I am at the age of 22, out of the religion. I just couldn't take it anymore. Lieing to my family, lieing to myself. I felt like such a hypocrite. I would have a sick feeling in my stomach during every meeting. I just need to figure out where I'm going to go from here. I'm working on it and I think I'll end up alright.
