A Bumb in with some JWs....

just to brief you all who dont know me since im still fairly new, i am darren, i am 24 years old, and i studied with the jws for about a year before i came to my senses.. here is a little "experience" i had a short while ago, 2 or 3 weeks back i thought i would share it all with you.. i just arrvied in new zealand a couple of months ago now, after being in england for so long, i decided to move back here and see my parents.. i was getting over the whole "indoctrination" process and things were looking good!

aside from the time i spent with jws, i only ever spoke to them once, i was about 12 and they dropped a magazine off at my parents house from which i thanked them since my parents were not home, closed the door, casually threw the magazine in the bin and carried on doing whatever i was doing.. after all these years of not seeing them or knowing anythign about them etc, i did my study in the uk and left that and i am now here.. so i had much more of understanding about jws etc.. my parents and i decided to drive to rotorua from new plymouth for a family drive and quality bonding time :) on the way there, about half way through, we decided to stop on a lay by and there was like a patch of grass no longer than a strip of about 15 metres with 2 benches.. we had a little mini(ish) picnic there and coffee before continuing our road trip.. i forgot to mention that as we pulled up to stop there, there was a car at the first bench and a group inside and a few people outside.. i didnt think abything of it, i actually thought they must have been some family doing what we were doing, a road trip, since there were not even any houses near by, it was all lovely views of mountains/hillsides etc.. anyway, we sit down at this bench about 5 or 6 metres away from them, and one raises there voice and says "hi there!

" so my dad responds hey!.

At least you are no longer doctrinated, so you saw it for what it was an annoying infringement on your family bonding, not some kind of sign that the JWs are right because God even reached you via the JWs down in NZ.

I have had weird travel experiences with JWs as well. I was in South East Asia for a few months and I came across not one, not two but three JW tracts in various countries. I saw the first one on the counter of a shop (no-one was manning it, I think JWs just dropped and left), the second was similar and it was on the reception desk at my accomodation (again looked like someone had sneakily dropped it there) and the thrid was that A4 love tract (I think it was in foreign language) blowing along the street... Even in a language you do not understand JWs and JW literature are unmistakable.

i'm sort of angry right now.. no, not angry..... i'm shaky.

at least, when i lift my cup of coffee to my lips, sitting here at starbucks, my hand is trembly.. i hate that!.

the power they have to still reach me on some hidden point that hides in the corners of my very being.... .

I am normally a lurker, but I had to comment.

Even though you obviously were a bit shaken up, I think your words may have actually had a powerful affect. As a born in yada yada, I would always want to hear why people left the JWs (unfortunately most times they were cut of by a "mature" JW) I think on some level I knew I was going to leave someday, and I clung to every tiny piece of evidence that you could leave the JWs and be OK. Truthfully meeting an ex-JW who was "allowed" to talk for long enough, or who talked respectfully enough was so rare I can count the incidents on one hand - but they stuck with me.

And I agree with No Room for George that hearing someone speak respectfully about their experiences of the 1975 incident would make you a bit of a JW legend :)

PS you are an excellent writer, and you should write a book (make a kindle version), I was completelu drawn into your story :)

JW strangers say mean things to you at assemblies?

jw's can be rotten, but what about the "brutally honest" jw strangers at assemblies?

i have had some issues with the general meaness jw's are to people that they do not even know, and are jw's.. example 1: i was maybe 13 years old and i was a fast developer, i had big boobs basically.

well a dress i had was really nice...my parents would not have let me wear something that was not apprepriate for me, but i guess the dress was low (i didn't think so) and when i was in the bathroom at the assembly at the mirror, a woman just came up to me and was like "you are showing all the assets you have to offer" or something to that effect.

Well...this wasn't said, rather done.

My Mother had a dear sister bang her on the head deliberately with her handbag at an assembly. The sister was going past in front of her (and the others seated there) and "accidently deliberately" let her bag hit my mother on the head. My mother said she thought she imagined it - but another sister from our congregation who witnessed the incident said to her later "I cannot believe a sister would do that (referring to the handbag incident)". I cant remember the rest of the story, ie if something happened that made the sister annoyed or angry... but it was a really weird thing to happen at an assembly.

now some people have their names involved with makes sense and so forth.

but i guess i'll start out.

Awkward position with family in relation to the truth

my mum (who's never been a witness) just phoned me up.

she says my aunt (my mum's sister) wants to get back into the truth.

my aunt stopped going to meetings a couple of years ago.

I don't understand why it has to be secret (your feelings about JW) when you said your Mum for example was never a JW. Sure it might feel a little weird taking a different stance on JW, but your Aunt may find what you have to share quite freeing.

" this week's service meeting will cover half of the 13 questions.

next week, congregations will finish the article along with a box full of several experiences with successful results from informal witnessing.

Jehovah's Witnesses are depressing

learning the truth about my faith as a jw (that it is wrong) actually has resulted in me having a more positive outlook on life, postive about today even though it has its problems.. but today, speaking with close jw friends (strong witnesses at that), i find myself hearing nothing but depressed thoughts.

when everything you talk about as a witness is how terrible the world is but soon (for over 100 years) the "new system" will be here ... just hang on ... is it any wonder so many jw's are on anti-depressants?.

it is depressing being surrounded by depressed people.. .

Couldn't agree more... The realization that every conversation I ever had (with Jws) was not "uplifting" (to borrow a WTism) was a catalyst to my exit... I just couldn't take the negativity anymore!!

I feel so sorry for JWs trapped inside the misery and they don't even realize it.

lads: yeah for charity.

I was a born in... but I experienced this too – because talking about your true thoughts is repressed it seems like everyone else gets it and something is wrong with you not the message. Peer pressure in the direction of becoming a JW (heavy JW association, and why do you think they want you to invite studies to the meeting asap?). I know of one JW that came in from the world and her adult daughter told me that she (her mother) felt like she needed "to join the club" to be fully accepted. The other thing is many who join the JWs from the outside are a bit odd, mental problems, just gone through a major life event (death/disaster) or just are worn down and tired from life and the JWs just seem oh so nice...(lovebombing)

Manipulative, deceptive recruiting and peer pressure – do not underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups!!!

(The "recruit" is not stupid... the JWs in large numbers have the power to sway a smart person into thinking that the JWs are right – despite the actual "beliefs" being too far fetched to even have a shred of credibility)
