Here's Looking At You, America.

having spent over a year reading and posting on sites such as this, i'm slowly starting to realise that there is quite a difference in the culture systems between the uk and the us, particularly in matters relating to religion.. from what i've read, it seems to me that the usa is very much more concerned with religion / faith / god, than is the uk or even australia.. also, it would appear that the us is somewhat more of a patriarchal society, for example, family time seems to be jealously guarded especially around us religious festivals such as thanksgiving.. also of interest is the usa's attitude that material prosperity can be a sign of god's approval, a sort of reward for good works.. the penal system seems draconian to most brits, it seems as though vengeance plays a greater part than rehabilitation.

the wtbts disciplinary structure in the us also seems to be much more demanding of its adherents than the wtbts in europe, there also seems to be a vengeful aspect to its willingness to disfellowship people for minor transgressions.. so, if this is a very general description of how the uk views the us, one has to ask the question, how does the us view the uk?.

You are so right. It is getting worse and worse too. The right wing Christian Coalition has a great deal of clout and if they had their way we would be a religious state. The thing that frightens me the most is that so many people have no problem with this.

I am not convinced that "family time" is so jealously guarded because it is a somewhat patriarchal society. I think it has more to do with the guilt that goes along with the neglect which often results in materialism being given such high priority.

You are so right here E-man and I must say that this attitude just cracks me up. So are they also saying that those who don't know material prosperity are not favored by God? What happened to God loves us all? Do they forget that in the bible Jesus tells us of one guy going to heaven cause he was poor (I didn't notice any great character references there) and the other poor shmuck went to hell, reason given, because he was rich? It also seems those of the we-are-rich/well-off-cause-God-loves-us mindset forget about the rich man getting into heaven like a camel will fit through the eye of a needle business.

This is fitting for the self-righteousness that is so prevalent in our society, especially by certain religions (Christians seem to be the worst).

This is such a vast land with so many differing opinions I cannot speak for others but personally I can't wait to get there to find out for myself. Maybe I'll see you and both of your ladies (even the newly acquired beauty, congrats btw) then.

i think a lot of space is wasted in arguments that get personal.

we are a varied bunch and i think that variety is good.

i dont want to discourage anyone from posting but personal attacks ( justified or not) dont achieve anything.

I recently was accepted to a Law school in New York.

If I were you I would put the whole debate about your intellect and debate skills on hold until you actually attend law school. There is will you will learn the fine art of argument. After you do, and if they do a good job teaching you, you will most likely be mortified to come back and read these "arguments" you have put forth on this board.

Another bit of advice: You need to learn to develop a thicker skin because you'll never survive law school if you are sincere in how some words from total strangers on some discussion board have affected you.

Good luck in law school, I think it will be quite challenging for you.

Marijuana...should it be legalised?

after talkin in chat tonight....it has got me and a friend talkin about whether marijuana should be legalised.. my view...yes, .

i) who has the right to tell me what to do with my own body?.

ii) alcohol is a legalised drug....each year more deaths occur through alcohol abuse than marijuana usage.. iii) people smoke it anyway and the question is not bein addressed.. iv) it's great to get stoned!!!

Of course pot should be legal. It is ridiculous that it is not. It is not nearly as incapacitating as alcohol and not nearly as harmful. Also it has been been found that, unlike any other drug, one does not need to increase the dosage for effectiveness.

Like anything it can cause harm but it is far and away the least harmful mind altering drug out there. I know a lot of people who would be a lot better off if they would calm down and smoke one. And you probably know lots of people who smoke pot that you would never suspect. Believe me. :-)

Hi Comf,

A most interesting post! I have to say that the philosophy you share with us is completely acceptable to me. I have had the situation you describe and it was pretty simple (fun too).

The key to success with such a plan is that the non-commital feelings are mutual. If and when that changes in one of the parties involved things could go horribly awry.

Of course marriage ended all that sort of thinking for me personally but if others find such an arrangement beneficial, more power to them!

The Lord has declared that no effeminate man shall inherit the kingdom of heaven (1 Cor 6:9) This proves that the scheme or habit of paying homage to women is not of God, but from the great enemy of God.

This interesting snippet brings to mind something I wonder about. If all this reverence toward women is such an insult to God, why did God make hormones the most powerful force known to man? You would think a merciful God would have gone a little easier in the sex drive category if he was so concerned about the "wrongful", yet undeniably powerful, distraction the genders are to each other.

life is so not black-and-white, either/or, us-versus-them!

life is such a rich pageant, such a glorious heady brew of perfume and musk and spice and manure and mold and rot, sometimes all in the same little experience!...i used to let this stuff make me crazy, trying to find the patterns, the meaning, the reasons for the absurd details of daily existence.

since i quit measuring everything against the big sovereignty/salvation yardstick, i try to just let things happen, and lately i'm delighted more and more at the quirky propinquity of good and bad in every experience.

Poor guy, he will probably suffer terribly from his views on masturbation as I doubt the women will be breaking down his door anytime soon.

Greetings to all,

Since many here do not know me (I am part of the h2o exodus) you probably don't know that I was actually never a JW but I studied with them a long time. Long enough to have been totally shocked when I found out the truth about the WT.

While I studied with them there were things that seemed not quite right. One of those things was exactly what you speak of here. I used to train staff in selling skills and I noticed all of these techniques in the "studies".

One upside for all ex-Jws is that they/you have been trained in selling and could apply those skills to any product. I have seen some mighty lucrative sales careers. Too bad many leave and don't realize they have these valuable, marketable (and much in demand) skills.
