This thread is interesting to me. I have read quite a lot of criticism of the NWT in the past (including the book by Countess) and found a lot of it to be reasonable. Not to mention that there did seem to be a large number of Greek scholars who had made statements against the NWT, and the fact that the WTBTS's list of supporting scholars was pretty weak (in some cases misleading regarding their credentials). Now this one scholar pipes up and basically says that criticism is all wrong, those 20 people you mentioned are all wrong, really in fact there is no consensus against the NWT because scholars don't have time, in fact the NWT is fabulous, etc. Just seems very curious. I for one did not find Countess' book "mostly tendentious and disputable". Of course I am not a Greek scholar [tm].
While I agree that the NWT is quite literally acurate in 99% of the verses, it is the 1% of tweaking that is an issue IMHO.

Philo,
I have always wanted to learn to play Go, but I have only ever played it against computer programs. Which I understand are extremely weak players due to the complexity of Go. -

Holidays: Do you celebrate?
by Vitameatavegamin ini smell something burning; oh, just me thinking again!!.
anyway, one thing i always missed were the holidays-christmas especially.
i know that this is an unproven celebration to say the least, but i have always loved the warmth and beauty of this holiday, although very commercialized in this day and age.

I for one am looking forward to the program but I am not expecting any effect on the average loyal JW. It will be chalked up to disgruntled apostates and satan's persecution. I think most of them won't even watch it. The ones that do are either a) types who would leave eventually anyway b) dunscott or You Know types..

Big Bang Question

Although its been mentioned in brief before I just wanted to make the point that the concept phyisicists hold of the BIGBANG is that it is not an explosion but an expansion.
Thanks for pointing that out. One of the things that really got my attention in the "Creation" book was the (unbelievably bad) argument that the big bang is not logical because explosions (eg bombs) destroy things, not create! Of course you can't just raise your hand and point out how stupid this argument is at the book study.

As far as I know, nothing just happens!
Well you would be wrong then. Quantum events 'just happen' all the time. An atomic nucleus can sit there for 100 million years and suddenly just emit an alpha particle out of the blue. More importantly, even in a perfect vacuum, particles (subatomic that is) can spontaneously appear. In fact this is happening continuously. These particles also rapidly disappear. The length of time they stick around is related to the amount of energy they 'borrow' from the void.

Why does God have to have a cause? What if God is a different type of lifeform all together? What if he is able to dwell outside of space, time and all the other aspects of the universe that affect our physical person? He would have to be right, to be able to manipulate all those things to bring about the material universe?
If such a creature as this can exist without cause, then surely this universe could also exist without cause.

The big bang singularity included everything that later became matter *and* spacetime. At the singularity space and time were meaningless.
You can't really speculate about where it came "from" because we have no information about anything outside of our universe. Nor can you wonder what came 'before' it, as from our standpoint there was no before. This is not a case of a universe of empty space with a tiny point of infinite energy in the center waiting to explode. The big bang was an expansion of space and time and matter. You can wonder if something outside of the universe created the singularity, although 'outside' is not really a meaningful concept here, the universe doesn't have inside and outside.
And yes ballistic there are scientists who are toying with the idea of 'virtual bubble universes' that can appear spontaneously.
