i happen to have met a man, in his seventies, who was made an offer that he was supposed not to be able to refuse.

Question for Billy The Ex-Bethelite and others who had forgone college sometime ago.
by garyneal ini was talking with my wife today about college and i asked her about why the society makes such a big deal about witnesses not going to college.
in typical dub fashion, my wife tells me that they do not discourage college, but they do not encourage it either.
instead, they encourage placing kingdom interests first.. now i told her about you (billy) and how you were at bethel and are now starting college at the age of 40 (i think that is correct).

I know you didn't ask me specifically but I too skipped college, pioneered for a year and then went to bethel for a year. Ultimatly it has not hurt me, at least not financially. I got a very nice paying job in a tec position.. I would like to say what it is but that would be a bit much.. suffice to say I work with many people who have college degrees. We all get paid the same (union job). But the bigger issue is... would I do it the same way again and what do i plan for my kids.
Knowing what I know now, yes I would live my life the same way. I learned a lot of valuable things about this org that I wouldn't know otherwise. HOWEVER I will be sending my kids to college, of some sort. What they go for and where I will discuss with them, but it is crazy to try to make it in the world we live in without at least a little additional education. My dumb luck dosent equal a sound life decision. I also happen to live in an area that still has not been hit by the current economic crissis very poorly or I may well be regreting the college thing. My kids will NOT be following the WT's advise on this.

Can you "fornicate" with your marriage mate? I've heard the WTBTS says that you can. Is this true?
by ultrabimbo inis it true that the current thinking of jehovah's witnesses is that you can "fornicate" with your marriage mate if you engage in sexual activity that is not approved by the writing department at bethel?
what are some examples?.
ultrabimbo.

for clarification, no act of Pornography (viewing or talking) is grounds for a divorce or seperation. JC yes, divorce no. and ANY act of porn COULD lead to a JC, but not automatically.
and nothing you do with you marriage mate qualifies as fornication. unless someone else is involved. but thats another thread altogether...

well concider the following:
***
w878/1p.13par.14ChristActivelyLeadsHisCongregation
***
As the active Head of the congregation, Christ wanted this important doctrinal matter to be settled by the entire visible governing body. By means of the holy spirit, he guided the minds of these devoted men in making their decision.—Acts 15:28, 29.
or this
***
w892/15p.20IsYourPersonalOpinionParamount?
***
However, when the Scriptural direction may seem to us to be open to different opinions, we need to demonstrate the humble responsiveness that was shown by the early Christians and accept decisions and directions from God’s congregation.
or this
***
it-2p.1023Spirit
***
When questions arose, the holy spirit was a helper in arriving at a decision, as in the question of circumcision, decided by the body, or council, of apostles and older men at Jerusalem. Peter told of the spirit’s being granted to uncircumcised people of the nations; Paul and Barnabas related the spirit’s operations in their ministry among such persons; and James, his memory of the Scriptures doubtless aided by holy spirit, called attention to the inspired prophecy of Amos foretelling that God’s name would be called on people of the nations. Thus all the thrust or drive of God’s holy spirit pointed in one direction, and hence, in recognition of this, when writing the letter conveying their decision, this body or council said: “For the holy spirit and we ourselves have favored adding no further burden to you, except these necessary things.”—Ac 15:1-29.

w967/15p.14par.18Jehovah’sFamilyEnjoysPreciousUnity
***
This decision helped Jewish and Gentile Christians to act and speak in unity. The congregations rejoiced, and precious unity continued, even as it does in God’s earth-wide family today under the spiritual guidance of the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses.—Acts 15:30-35.
and how about this one
***
btchap.14p.110“WeHaveCometoaUnanimousAccord”
***
The Governing Body relies on God’s holy spirit for direction. Its members do not regard themselves as the leaders of Jehovah’s people. Rather, like all anointed Christians on earth, they “keep following the Lamb [Jesus Christ] no matter where he goes.”—Rev. 14:4.
The last one is particularly gaulling. Notice, the GB relies on God's spirit for direction, but they dont see themselves as leaders. In other words God's spirit talks to them, they repeat it, and we all move togther. So they dont decide anything. It all comes from God. Also, in response to what you mentioned earlier, no they are not interchangeable. Notice that the all these quotes regarding direction refer, not to the slave or the annointed, but to the GB. It is true that you have to be "annointed" to be of the GB, but just because you are annointed dosent allow you to have insight or direct God's people in JW land. ONLY the GB get to direct, or as that last quote says, use God's spirit to direct God's people.

need words for my JW father
by alamb ini have been pointing out that the shunning doctrine is unscriptural and unloving (jw speak).
he texted that my whole family stayed in the "truth" it was me who left.. please give the concise words to answer him.
i know it won't really do any good to try to reason with him, it will just feel good to "nail it.".

tell him that you still value truth above all else. whever that truth may be, however difficult it may be to accept. Let him know that Jehovah and the christ are the higest standard you know, and you can only find and accept truth through them.
then offer him the red pill.

pirita hit the nail on the head. the "annointed" as a group claim to have no special insight. that eliminates the potential that someone in a congregation could try to overide the GB. It is claimed ONLY that the slave, as represented by the GB have special insight. Here is the question that always bothered me...
how could anyone who is "spirit directed" make a mistake in bible understanding...? why would a doctrine ever change? yes men are imperfect, but God's sprit is not. if he could inspire the bible to be recorded perfectly by imperfect men, if could protect its translation as the WT claims over thousands of years, why cant he prevent those clowns in brooklyn from making mistakes? dosent add up to me...

More Society cutbacks - Society says "screw you" to the publishers yet again
by sir82 inat our service meeting it was announced that there is a change in the manner in which magazines are now to be delivered to the congregations.. up until now, magazines were sent to each kingdom hall via ups.
in years past magazines were sent to each congregation po's home address via ups.. going forward, magazines will be sent only as far as the assembly hall.
it is the responsibility of each kingdom hall to send brother(s) twice a month to drive out there, pick up the magazines, and return.. this of course saves a little bit of money for the society - shipping larger packages to fewer addresses will cost less.. however, what about the expense to the local congregations?.

I guess being an elder this whole thing dosent really create a huge deal for me. We got this letter about a month ago (im in the usa). its just another cost saving measure, along with not having your own magaizine box anymore. you just take what you need for the week. have you heard about that one yet?

1914 Doctrine is FALSE -- Questions for JW's
by UnDisfellowshipped inis there any jehovah's witness who can answer these questions about 1914?.
can you demonstrate, using the holy scriptures, that the messianic kingdom was established in 1914, that jesus got the full legal right to become king that year, and that jesus returned invisibly in 1914, and that the "last days" began that year?.
1:) no encyclopedia, no history book, and no archaeology book that i have ever seen have ever said that nebuchadnezzar destroyed jerusalem and the temple in the year 607 bce.

Blood Transfusion?
by Friend inconsidering the latest questions from readers article on blood transfusion, i was wondering what the feelings are among this forums participants about blood transfusion.
over the years the society has been receiving a growing amount of letters on the subject of blood and blood transfusion.
any interesting biblical perspectives here about whether "abstain from blood" means abstain from blood transfusion?

it would also be short hypocritical to infer that "middle managers" like elders could affect change. We all know that is not how it works. The "tail does not wag the dog"...The branch would remove a thousand elders to keep the rest in line. Elders cannot affect change.
