Great stuff. Love anything by Carl Sagan...the world could use a few more of him. He is missed.

Just how much of a SUCCESS is God..........so far?
by Terry inyou can't be god if nobody exists but you.. sure, you are taller.
but, taller than what?.
see, a superlative is the last step among comparisons: good, better....best!.

agonus...good point. They live in such perpetual fear of Satan and this wicked system of his. They are supposed to fear god more...but they don't. The WTBS wants it this way...otherwise their 'us vs. evil world' wouldn't hold as much power over them.
Come to think of it...I probably spent more time worrying about the evil of satan than I did thinking of the good of jehovah.

Think it was in my late teens/early twenties I started to notice cracks in the logic of god. I remember thinking..."us humans to god seem like a kid owning an ant farm. But the kid is sadistic and lights the ant farm on fire. Whatever ants escape he decides those ones are worthy of living in his ultimate, special ant farm."
You're right Terry...the whole biblical god story just doesn't make any sense. Incredibly silly really. IF there is some sort of intelligent entity responsible for the universe, I'm certain it'd hate to be called "god". After all the hideous ones man has made up.

Can science and religion coexist peacefully?
by kowalskil incan science and religion coexist peacefully?
this is a good question to start an interesting discussion among scientists, theologians and sociologists.
see how this question was answered by many smart people at my website:.

I do it find curious that the question is usually "are religion and science compatible?" When it is the word religion used I say no, because what religion? They can't all be compatible, if at all.
Science is the constant, and all the religious beliefs vary. So we'll have a mormon tell a JW "our religions agrees with science not yours" or a Muslim to a Christian, or a Jew to a Buddhist, whatever combo you want. Science remains the constant, the different ideologies are jostling to cozy up to science, and are at odds with eachother. And what is usually lost on believers is that their choice of religion simply came down to geography...where they were born.
Anyhoo, I propose a better question...is spirituality and science compatible? To that I'd say yes, because sprituality can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. It does not require one to staunchly defend dogma.

PSacramento...I did check it out. Nothing there is new...been there, done that. Their basic message is "whatever science says we agree with it, but a god was behind it all." Fine, believe that a god did it...but it sure as hell was not the patriarchal, woman-suppressing, slave-condoning god of the bible.

www.biologos.org - "BioLogos is led by a group of Christians who are committed to promoting a perspective on the origins of life that is both theologically and scientifically sound."
This site does not try to prove religion and science are compatible. It is trying to prove it's own ideology, biased and with its own agenda. No different than JWs releasing the "Origins of Life" brochure.
If it was attempting to prove religion agrees with science, it would need to include Islam and Judaism ideologies, which along with Christianity makes up the vast majority of religions on earth. You can't pick and choose.
Science can't prove, and doesn't care to, that muslims will receive 72 virgins in the afterlife, that Joseph Smith found buried golden plates, or that the WTBS is divinely inspired by jesus.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things, and bad people doing bad things.
But for good people to do bad things, that takes religion.

Jerry Coyne wrote a recent column on this..." Science and religion aren't friends"
http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/forum/2010-10-11-column11_ST_N.htm
"In the end, science is no more compatible with religion than with other superstitions, such as leprechauns. Yet we don't talk about reconciling science with leprechauns. We worry about religion simply because it's the most venerable superstition — and the most politically and financially powerful."

Come on, Jeff. Don't you know it was SATAN that put those contradictions in the bible? Right after he planted some dinosaur bones.
