Any Runners Here?
by zoiks inanyone else like to run?
i started running regularly in the past year or so and am becoming addicted.
participated in my first 5k earlier this summer, a large even with about 2,500+ runners.

I've been hearing more and more about these FiveFingers runners by Vibram. Allegedly the "barefoot" running is better for you and is supposed to feel great. I think it be kinda cool, wouldn't mind giving them a try.
Has anyone tried these? What did you think? -

I love running...but I've fallen off with the regularity. Had bad sciatica most of last year and am now slowly working my way back into it. Momentum is everything, once you get started it gets easier and easier.
Few years back used to go 3-4 times a week, would occasionally do a 15km run. I find I just gotta go when it pops in your head....don't think about it. Went out lastnight at 10:30 with the hound...felt great.

I just can't do this anymore
by Awen indear friends:.
for years now after my exit from the wtbts i have searched for god.
as i have previously mentioned in other threads i looked into many other religions, including druidry, zen and tibetan buddhism (not really a religion), asatru, native american shamanism, kemetic orthodoxy, gnosticism and pandeism.

Congrats Awen, on being able to examine yourself with such honesty and clarity. My journey out of the Org started with questioning the God of the Bible, and the bible itself. Just didn't add up for all the reasons you mentioned.
I now see it like this...
There about 2 billion (give or take) people that call themselves Christian. They are Christian because they claim to "hear" or "feel" Christ. This is how they KNOW God, and that he exists.
Then you have about 1.5 billion people that call themselves Muslims. They are Muslim because they claim to "hear" or "feel" Mohammed the prophet . This is how they KNOW God/Allah, and that he exists.
So that leaves me with a few questions:
The creator of the universe reaches people thru Christ or Mohammed? If so, how can both be right and yet so very different? Also, why the odd geographical divide: eastern hemisphere is Muslim, western is Christian?
OR.....is this commonality in Christians and Muslims "just knowing"..."hearing"...and "feeling" a human condition? The ability for the brain to deceive itself or want to believe something badly enough?
The latter has been the more logical conclusion for myself. Though, I can't say for sure....so I'll see you around the Church of I Don't Know.

Tammy...The Magic of Reality, agreed that is an interesting title.
As for as the scientific method has taken us, I too think we are still in the "dark ages" when it comes to unlocking the mysteries of our universe. Sure we've walked on the moon, advancements in medicine, genetic research, etc....even you and I discoursing over the internet thousands of kms apart (...and in spite you missing the letter X).
But those are all drops in the bucket of what yet there is to discover and learn. For instance, we can only account for 4% of the universe...dark matter and dark energy make up the rest, for which we don't know what that is yet. Exciting times indeed. Wish I could live long enough to see how the human race unfolds.
Shelby: To be honest, I think I'll wait for the summary critiques before I decide whether to read it.
I too don't usually rush out and pick up a book at first release. One, mainly because I don't like hardcover...prefer to wait for the paperback. Two, same reason...let some reviews roll in, find out what exactly is being presented. But will likely end up reading it and look forward to dissecting it here on JWN with you folks.

Dawkins newest book might be of interest - The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True. Just heard about it, so not yet aware of the focus and scope of the subject matter, but think I'll check it out. Hardcover out on Oct.4

Interesting JonH. Stumbled across this article from Scientific American: Faster-Than-Light Neutrinos? Physics Luminaries Voice Doubts It has a number of physicists reactions to the announcement.
After reading your post, I thought of this comment from the article...
Heinrich Päs, theoretical physicist of the Technical University Dortmund in Germany:
"It seems that the experimentalists were very careful, but this is really BIG news....
There are certain misunderstandings with people who are very cynical now: Even if true, this result neither proves Einstein wrong nor implies that causality has to be violated and time travel is possible. Things can move faster than the speed of light without violating Einstein if either the speed of light is not the limiting velocity as one can observe it for light propagation in media such as, for example, water. This can be modeled with background fields in the vacuum as has been proposed by [Indiana University physicist] Alan Kostelecky .
Or spacetime could be warped in a way so that neutrinos can take a shortcut without really being faster than the speed of light. As our three space plus one time dimensions look pretty flat, this would require an extra dimension (as proposed by [University of Hawaii at Manoa physicist] Sandip Pakvasa, [Vanderbilt University physicist] Tom Weiler and myself).
On the other hand, if something moves faster than the speed of light, causality violations—aka time travel—may be a possibility (for example, in models with two warped extra dimensions as proposed by [Vanderbilt physicist] James Dent, Pakvasa, Weiler and myself). And that, of course, would have really crazy and mind-boggling consequences, but even there can [there] be scenarios which are contradictory.
So, in short, this is really exciting. But since it is so exciting, I'm not sure whether one should be too optimistic that it will survive the tests of other experiments." -

Do your elders care at all?
by Mr. Falcon ini currently have an elder body who, for the most part, seems utterly complacent and disinterested in actually "shepherding" anything.
i can't tell if they are lazy or just oblivious to their responsiblities of being "teachers".
it seems like they are the last to know anything and always procrastinate on everything.

Yes...this is great exposure. He has nearly 250,000 followers on twitter, and likely many thousands more not on twitter that visit his website.
I've been following him on twitter for some time and they regularly tweet links to (anti) religious type articles. Glad they picked up on this one.
