  Facebook privacy settings are crucial to control your info!!

  i just thought i'd start this topic about facebook privacy settings as i am seeing it come up on here and other forums a lot where you have people who are on facebook and then their jw family or friends are requesting to be friends with them and they don't know what to do!!

  we are hearing it time and time again: you "friended" some jw family member, long-ago pioneer partner, etc, etc.

  that person then goes through your facebook profile and sees everything you've written, your photos of you and your new life including holidays, partners, worldly activities, etc, etc.

  Wanna hide your email address or your contact info?

  Even though you set your Privacy Setting = Friend Only ...... YOUR CONTACT INFO is still visible.

  Some have their emails showing. Lucky, most are dummy or fake email address. This is a good precaution if all else fail on Facebook.

  But if you need to hide your email / contact info, here's the trick:

  Go to "Privacy Settings", select "Friends Only" and click "Apply These Settings" <--- This is used to Default all settings to "Friends Only".

  Then click on "Customize settings" (can't find it, try Ctrl+F and enter "Customize settings"), then go to "Contact information" section (lowest section) of page and change settings instead of "Friends Only" into "Customize" next "Make this visible to" ... either "Me Only" or "Specific People", finally "Save Setting".

  It's always a good idea to preview your profile ---> "Preview My Profile" (can't find it, try Ctrl+F and enter "Preview My Profile").

  Save, check and double-check.

  preferably, if i could copy and paste most of the words.. because of j.w.

  lurkers i will not tell exactly when i'll email these to their brothers to keep them guessing.. thanks..

  Are you a JW? (undercover asked) - Nope. But my wife is one and my neighbor is also. Therefore, I have to be careful by not involving them. Otherwise, she'll go wild pulling strings and nerves.

  Forgive the Watchtower!

  i was abused by my father growing up.

  physically and emotionally.. as a entered my adult life i had next to no self esteem, in part because he didn't really attempt to help me get some because i didn't chose the career path that he dreamed for me.. 2 years ago i forgave him.

  i let go of the anger that i had for him because i knew that when it was all said and done, he did what he did and i believe that he did his best.

  It is very hard to forgive an unrepentant and persistent offender. I think that's Watchtower to you.

  If you could forgive Watchtower, then do so with caution. Like in a MacGyver episode, there was a scorpion that a turtle accomodated to ferry across the river. The scorpion promised not to sting the turtle. Halfway across the river the scorpion stung the turtle, then both drowned. Unfortunately like the scorpion, it is Watchtower's nature to sting.

  If your father was a J.W., then maybe he was misguided by Watchtower's parenting principles and doctrines.

  Maybe there is forgiveness, but don't condone the scorpius nature of Watchtower.

  i studied with j.w.s for a while then stopped for occupational reasons.. our relationship is tense.

  but i managed to keep our peace so far.

  Hi all,

  I've been lurkin for a while and i've been reading and replying some posts.

  I'm Catholic and my wife is a J.W. I studied with J.W.s for a while then stopped for occupational reasons.

  Our relationship is tense. But I managed to keep our peace so far. I just avoid talking about religion with her.

  Thats as far I could tell about my private life. I'm busy, but a curious cat.

  This will be my onlt "starting" post. Now I'll be back lurkin.

  if one sends a message via facebook that might also include a picture, is it possible for the receiver to trace where the message came from?

  obviously, they know it came from facebook username soandso, but do they have any way to know (perhaps via some tags on the image) where the message really came from (ip address, location, etc.

  i agree they don't just give out your ip address. its a waste of page space to include techenese ip add.

  btw, your real address might be in your profile and thats a giveaway.

  No, that info is not readily available. But I think Facebook keeps a confidential log of everybody's IP address where they logged into. This could be subpoenaed by courts for criminal case. I'm not sure how capable Watchtower is in persuading Facebook your records.

  If you're in a firewall network they cannot easily pinpoint the terminal from which you logged on. For example, if you used firewall Z, then they only know the IP of firewall Z. But they do not know if it came from terminal 1, 2, or 2000. They will have to go to firewall Z and subpoena their logs.

  Here's a trick, but I think it's still traceable:
  Remote into a computer then login to Facebook from that computer. Theoretically, the IP address will be the location of the computer you remote into.

  Or, you can use a combination of firewall and remote login technique.

  Free WiFi on shoppes usually have firewalls.

  Try dial-in ISP, the IP address usually changes. Check your PM.

  TELL that to the J.W. kids in my congregation. There are no members between 16 and 30 in my congregation. Why so? They saw the fire. From elder families to the regular families they left.

  As one said, when the house is on fire, get out for you safety. Only one severely blinded by Watchtower could not this truth.
