it seems that religion has always been considered the opium of the people.
or at least many tend to gravitate towards religion to have or solidify some sort of future with a supreme being overlooking them hoping to have a reward either in heaven or in the jehovah's witnesses case - living forever in a " paradise earth ".
it seems that people can't just live day to day and let each day come to them with whatever happens.
For me it's quite simple: Why worry about things you have no control over? It's best to just live in the moment and do what you can about things you actually DO have control over.
It's like what's in the Serenity Prayer:
... Grant me the SERENITY to accept the thing I CANNOT change
The COURAGE to change the things I CAN
And the WISDOM to know the difference...

at a recent assembly, there was a talk highlighting the dangers of higher education.
the brother used an example of a young girl who went to university, began going to bars, and ended up getting drugged and gang raped - as if this happens to every young jw who chooses to get higher education.. .
what ridiculous examples have you heard used at meetings or assemblies?.
At one assembly, I heard a story from the platform that almost made me burst out laughing: Once there were two Brothers TM who went to a pub for lunch/dinner/whatever. Both were married. One of the brothers started eyeing up a woman across the room (apparently couldn't help himself). The woman noticed and eventually came over to their table and said to the "brother": "I saw you looking at me; I get the hint. Come home with me when you're done here." The "brother" immediately denied he was looking and it got to the point where the woman got extremely upset, started yelling, screaming and making a big scene. When the "brother" came home, him and the wife had a big blow up over the incident at the bar and their marriage ended soon after. The moral of the story: don't go to worldly drinking establishments of any kind because of the multitude of "moral dangers".
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Ya right! That's really rich. If this story is to be believed at all, there must have been some serious problems in the marriage before any of that happened. I'm sure this one was made up...

as the board no doubt knows, there was some sort of rumor in the early 1980s going around amongst the witnesses that a smurf doll came to life in the kingdom hall, or that smurfs were demonic.. 2 questions:.
1. do any not remember any such rumors though they were witnesses at the time?.
2. of those who do, did all the witnesses believe them, or otherwise, what proportion rejected the rumor as nonsense?.
I was a kid at the time and, funny thing, I NEVER heard of smurf/demon thing. Looking back, I can see that JWs wouldn't have liked smurfs for the simple reason that there was sorcery and magic involed. It's all so stupid, really...

i remember being a high school senior and wanting to go to prom ( i graduated from high school in 2003 ), but prom was forbidden when your a jw teen.
i even said to my parents if i took a witness girl would it be ok; they actually said yes.
i found a girl ( yes she's a witness ) to go with me, but here's the kicker she agreed to go.
I had already quit the JWs (the first time) by then so I decided that there was no reason for me not to go. Yeah, I actually went. Sure, I was a fish out of water but the other kids were glad to see me getting involved in "life". Of my two parents, only my mom was the JW as my dad never believed, so she had no choice but to go along with it.

i would go with either johnny cash - hurt or gary jules-mad world.
Another song that makes you want to O.D. ...

To pretend no one can find
The fallacies of morning rose
Forbidden fruit, hidden eyes
Courtesies that I despise in me
Take a ride, take a shot now
'Cause nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do
Covered by the blind belief
That fantasies of sinful screens
Bear the facts, assume the dye
End the vows, no need to lie, enjoy
Take a ride, take a shot now
'Cause nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do
Who am I, what and why?
'Cause all I have left is my memories of yesterday
Oh these sour times
'Cause nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do
After time the bitter taste
Of innocence, decent or race
Scattered seeds, buried lives
Mysteries of our disguise revolve
Circumstance will decide ....
'Cause nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do
'Cause nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you
Nobody loves.. me
It's true
Not, like, you.. do

This one, in it's own way, is quite depressing... admittedly in a very sick, twisted sort of way.

cult free radio on ustream has (at least) two guests lined up for next saturday night's show.
the topic is education, and how the watchtower society uses it (restricting it, controlling it, etc.
) as a tool of control over its members.
Hey, I'm in! I hope this works out well for you in the long run...
