assemblies and my lovely wife

i finally put a couple of pieces together that have boggled me for years.. i would take my family to the conventions and assemblies and for some reason, my wife would always be upset or start an argument in the car on the way home, or in the week that follows.

i realize now that her frustration is that i am not the guy in the demonstrations.

you know, the guy who has the bestfriend/elder who always says the perfect thing and the guy is so humble and does this little talks-to-himself thing where he reveals his deep spirituality and applies the ever-so-wise words of his friend and after that life is just great again!.

Has it ever occurred to you that maybe those interviews/experiences on stage are tarted up or even outright bullshit? In many (if not all) circuits and districts, not only is embellishment of facts and outright lying encouraged, it's even expected of people. Lying for the truth, eh? What's presented on stage, overall, is a fiction of epic proportions. Nobody's life in dubbie land is even half as perfect or idyllic as what they portray on stage, in the magazines/books, etc. I'm not sure if you have entirely realized the extent of it just yet and it's too bad that your wife can't see that at all. I'm not sure what you can do, really. My condolences, man...

The Real Issues Facing former Jehovah's Witnesses

on internet forums such as these, it is to be expected that there will be people who want to save jw's.

esp from (thinking for) themselves.. however, the real dillema's facing an ex jw who leaves, whether on their own terms or being disfellowshipped are real and haven't changed.. .

lonliness, how to make friends, is a big issue.. fear, esp fear based on superstition, a fear of god and of the future that is not in any way based in proveable fact.. education, how to think and reason critically to avoid being taken advantage of is a big challenge.. love, sex, and how to navigate your way around all of that hot mess.. geez, yeah, forgot.

That is a pretty good post, Jeff, but I must echo the sentiments of some others here. This website isn't so much about freedom from God as it's about freedom from a religion. Just because someone makes an exit from the JWs doesn't mean that he/she will automatically become an atheist. We all walk on our own path in life. Yes, I'll concede that we don't need outsiders coming in here thinking that we are easy pickin's for their pet religious cause but vicious, condescending anti-religion hype doesn't help matters either. Governmental constitutions around the world guarantee freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion...

How Many on JWNet are still JWs?

i've been wondering about this for some time.

if there are 60,000+ registered users on here, what percentage are actual non-dfed or non-daed witnesses?

if it was 1/3, that would be over 20,000 active/inactive witnesses that post and read these pages- and that's huge.

I'm inactive and trying to carefully tip-toe around the religion thing and my family's concerns about me over it. I like to think that I'm in the final, extended phase of a fade-out. I haven't seen the inside of my local KH for about three years now and I still have no intention of going back. Taken as a whole, I don't miss the congregations in the least; not mine or any others I've visited. I'm fearing what my family might have heard about how to treat inactive ones during this year's DC but I'm far too stubborn and non-conformist to go scurrying back over fears about what MIGHT happen...

Was there anything different about you that helped you escape the WT?

for me i know it was because i was a reader.. i began reading books at the age of 13, this was in the 1950's.

because there were some serious family problems i had two escapes i could count on reading and associating with my friends at the kingdom hall.. as i devoured steinbeck, hemingway, wolf etc.

my world view expanded....it had to.

Unlike the more 'bookish' types here, I'm not so much the avid reader. I think the difference with me is that I'm highly intuitive, perhaps much more than most others. I am also a hardcore non-conformist.

The more time that passed since my baptism, the more I felt at unease with the people in my own congregation and several others. I knew the doctrines were a bit "off" but I was thinking that the "love" among "God's chosen people" would eventually straighten things out... until I started smelling rat. I was smelling rat and I wasn't quite sure where it was coming from. I took some time before I figured out that JWs aren't what they seem to be. By the time I did, I was deeply depressed and irritable. I was looking for emotional and moral support and finding very little of it. I just couldn't motivate myself to go to meetings or failed service anymore. It wasn't until I joined a local support group and this website that I was able to see the "rat" that I was smelling. JWs are, quite frankly, an emotionally toxic bunch, overall...

Anniversary of my mums death....the JW robbed me of time with her and I cant forgive them.

she was lying in intensive care (i didnt know she only had a few days left)...... building up to the bloody convention in cardiff millenium stadium.

It's little wonder that you chose to memorialize your mother's name here on this forum. It really is tragic that you got hoodwinked into being away from you mum in her last hours because of a false hope. I wish you well and I hope the pain fades someday...

My encounter today.....

let me start with: i havent been to a meeting in almost 2 years, i am "inactive" and the only contact i have w the jw is the an open minded jw friend who i talk to....since i left, i have done what i want, travel, get my nose pierced again (had it pierced before i baptized but they gave me hell for it, even thought the bible doesnt say anything bad about nose piercings) and hang out w "wordly" friends who smoke, drink and swear.... i don't smoke but lately i have been giving this friend a ride and he is a-pack a day type of guy... he left his pack in my car yesterday..... so, i am working evenings this week on a special project, and this morning i decided to run some errands.

i was hungry so i stopped at macdonalds to grab some coffee... i placed my order thru the drive thru and pull over to the pay window, as i look for the money the drive-thru attendant says "wow, hello free!

", i look up and omfg one of the brothers from my congo... i acted like normal (sorry but i dont get nervous of agitated when i see a jw, i just dont give a dang) and smiled and made short conversation, while he is tellng me how much he misses seeing me at the hall, i see his eyes going between my piercing, my jet black goth hair and the pack of cigarettes on my passenger seat.... .

I have to join the chorus of voices saying 'don't reply to them'. Don't acknowledge them. Don't give them the time of day. As someone already said, if you speak with them at all, you'd be giving them a place in your life... you'd only be giving credence to their (perceived) authority over you... you'd be giving them satisfaction in your acknowledgement of them. Deny them that satisfaction.

I'm sure you've already made up your mind as to what you're going to do BUT just remember that all actions have consequences, consequences that are often unseen by us. Tread carefully...
