$10 per pub. Money begging session last night
by StarTrekAngel inlast night, during our "christian life and ministry" meeting, we had a session on local needs.
elder opened the talk with a disclaimer saying that this was a reminder (cited psalms about how david loved jehovahs reminders).
he reminded us of how bless we are of having our own local assembly hall.

At each assembly now the watchtower has a per publisher add on that goes back to them. I think its about 8-10/publisher. I think 8 in the US and 10 in Canada. This in turn is added onto the cost of running the assembly hall. Thus the reason the 10k days are now 20k days.
I remember the letter read during elders meetings trying to explain this blatant gouge.

My wife made a very wordly comment the other night
by Clambake inmy wife who is currently on maternity leave made a comment about luck she was to leave in canada because we get 52 weeks maternity at basically 40,000 per year.
she is not originally from canada coming from a country with basically no maternity leave.
i told her to make sure she doesn't say anything like that at kh.

As someone who continued to pay into the system more than I will ever get it out it pissed me off everytime, and I was happy to say so and add that we can be grateful so many went to university and higher learning so that those benefits could be paid for.
For me I'm still shocked how many JW's are on disability but able to pioneer full time. Maybe that is just a Canadian problem, I never saw much of it in my time in Washington state.

Did you KNOW Ray and Cynthia or the legal copyright holder? Only a few maybe had limited contact.
by blondie ini have known all of them over the last 15 years, talked at length with them, and knew what their wishes were, the copyright holder and spouse spent even more time with them socially and helping them set up their arrangements for when ray and cynthia passed.
i don't believe that anyone else on this board or others was a confidant.
there is no need to prove it to anyone but the copyright office which is satisfied with this.

Still what a fascinating range of feelings and answers relative to some ex and maybe current publishers relative to the publishing of an old book.
Not lost on me is the timing of the watchtower with its large volume of out of print literature.
The ship has sailed on many a book.

If you went back in time, would you be a god?
by Simon inwe just finished watching outlander which is about a woman who goes back in time ~200 years from the end of wwii.
she ends up in the scottish highlands in the middle of the jacobite uprising.
it's a great show although the last episodes were a little graphic (they make game of thrones seem like sesame street).. but it got me thinking ... if you went back in time would you in fact be the 'god' you may imagine because of your knowledge of modern technology and the future?.

I'd be a god, after I played the stock market and won the lotto a few times. -

Having legit copies does improve and counteract piracy, it also improves and controls content and your digital rights. Its why you can buy movies in foreign countries legally. If you don't your more likely to expand piracy.
Nothing anyone really does will ever stop piracy. Your only trying to minimize it when you improve content distribution. People who think they can stop it completely are not being realistic to themselves, and the market. it happens get over it. But you encourage it if you have something people want, and you sit on it for some time. That is the business argument of this.
Myself, as I guess a newbie and not knowing the things of the last 15 years or so of the EXJW might be missing some key information, but the business side of me see(s):
1) Copyright - yes someone holds it and controls it.
2) Publishing - hasn't been done in some time, and is not available in digital format, has limited availability. (they didn't adapt the model for content distribution in an internet age, and copies are more rare than an HMV store or a blockbuster video)
3) How to get this legally into more hands for revenue of the copyright holder. Unless the copyright holder has some visions of this being a valuable rare book to sell at a later date.
That is pretty much it. It is not a debate over piracy, which was and is never going to be stopped. I thought the debate was over respecting the copyright and getting the book out, not whether or not we could stop piracy.

Not sure where I said or suggested the people breaking the copyright were doing a service. I think people want a legal means to have the book provide a service.
I think most folks agree that, and I do as well, that the decisions on what to do with the copyright are not ours, and are in the holders hands.
This is just business for me. Make money, cool, but don't blame everyone else for bad business decisions. Just ask HMV or go to your local, video store, they all made bad business decisions and they are not around. If you restrict content on anything, it gets out. (Netflix, geo-restrictions, etc...). This is so classic old school thinking. I think people are only wanting to help promote the book, and quite possibly see the current holder as the detriment to that do to the fact it has availability issues.
No doubt, piracy has impacted the potential sale of this book, but due to its limited target audience its also advertised it better than most publishers would. Hammonds work on this would say its helped, while Libowitz & Zentners work would say it hurt, so the messaging on piracy and book publishing is mixed.

I think that the whole thing was blown out of proportion, and likely all the information was not given or available. Those that didn't like the copyright, just wanted the damn book. Pure and simple, its availability was the issue not the actual copyright.
People should have been selling the freaking ebook for the last 5 years or so. So the person at that time made a bad business decision that likely cost them $$. That is the real essence of the problem, and people just need to come clean and admit that. That is what got lost in the debate.
The copyright was and is valid, and sure some want it out free because it wakes up people, etc... But I know for me I wanted to either buy the damn copyright or have it put in the public domain so you could actually get a legal copy. Its a supply issue not a copyright issue.
Then if its a demand issue, its a business decision to print or not.

Finally posting and I'm FRUSTRATED!!!
by stephanie61092 inokay, i'm about to engage in a major word vomit.
just giving you fair warning as your time may be better spent somewhere else.. so, i'm sitting on my lunch break, bawling my eyes out, and writing on this forum to people i don't know yet probably have a great deal in common with but at the same time, used to scare the daylights out of me.
for years, i would come across this forum and 'lurk' awhile if you will, or see things on youtube.

Take care of yourself, and keep your chin up. It takes much strength to see what you have seen. Raise your head high and see that many could not have gone through what you did.
It may be a difficult time for you and your feeling and thoughts. Don't loose hope. Believe in yourself.
