Poisonous Congregations and Incompetent Leadership
by Nickolas ini'm not sure where this topic belongs.
the adult & heated debate category, maybe, or jokes & humour.
guess we'll see.

My hall was toxic. It was ruled by an old, hard-nosed brother completely out of touch with reality. And the dysfunctional families creating drama overshadowed the few nice people who really meant well. Even the CO and his wife dreaded visiting our hall because it was so unloving and cold.
In contrast, a trip to Cuba showed how relaxed and happy the JWs were there. They were so full of love and had a completely different vibe than any congregation I've been to in Canada. But perhaps that is because the culture there is more loving and warm in general?
I definitely think some places are worse than others.

WOW, thanks for posting! I can't believe how the elders act like cops and checked the tv listings to check out the girl's story. What if they have a DVR?

How did you tell your mate that .....
by stuckinamovement inyou no longer believed that the watchtower organization was the truth, and that you were no longer going to go to the meetings or service?.
and a followup question... what was the response?.

SIAM - looks like you guys are on the right track on the way out together.
My service had been dwindling for years. After the "generation" change, I asked my husband to help me see how that was Biblical and he couldn't. I also asked him to help me understand how 607 was true and he couldn't come up with that date. I then told him I couldn't go on service anymore because I wasn't 100% convinced of my beliefs and didn't want to teach others something I wasn't 100% sure about.
We would have very heated discussions about the faith and doctrinal issues, but it didn't get us anywhere. So I just ignored things, and a year later he told me he didn't believe the truth anymore. We both stopped going to meetings shortly after I told him I wasn't 100% sure about the religion. I just said I wasn't going, and thankfully he didn't put up a fight about it.

It's sad realizing all your good "friends" were simply acquaintances. Do you have any workmates that have children you can get to know better? Sometimes it's easier to leave if you have a good social network already in place. As a stay at home Mom, I can tell you it stinks not having any friends anymore!

Welcome, I'm also 28 and I just left last year. I recommend all the books already mentioned. The more research I did, the crazier the religion sounded and it had less of a hold on me...check out Beth Sarim on Wikipedia!
I no longer fear Armageddon, and am happy that my children will now have a shot at living their life to the fullest.

I could really use some advice :(
by FifthOfNovember inokay, here's some background information.. my girlfriend is in a program at a college about 30 minutes away.
she can only come home on the weekends and i usually go over once a week to visit.
there is a guy there that she hangs out with quite a bit, she's mentioned how he is really nice and funny.

It sounds like she's a bit confused. If she really is committed to your relationship, she should stop being friends with that other guy. If the situation was reversed, how would she feel if you continued to be friends with a girl who had a crush on you and you had a small crush on her? Trust is an issue, and she needs to decide if she wants to be with you, or test out the waters with someone else.
I'm sorry you are going through this right now.

Congratulations on your 10th anniversary!!! It sounds like you had a beautiful wedding.
My wedding pictures make me a little sad too. Being so young, I didn't have much say about my special day. The only thing I really got to decide on was marrying my husband, which is the best decision I've ever made! He exited the religion with me after a year of intense marital turbulence.
For most of our married life I tried to be a good JW wife, but it made me depressed. I felt like I couldn't be myself with my husband or live up to who I thought he wanted me to be. Now that I can finally be myself, we have such a wonderful relationship, I just wish it could have been this great from the beginning.
Next year is our 10th anniversary, and I want to renew our vows on a beach with only ourselves and our children there.
