so i was interviewing a guy for a podcast episode today and he went and saw his grandmother over christmas to gather some history.
he wasn't raised a jw but it turns out his family was actually opposed to the jws because they went all the way back to russell.
according to him (from her stories), they refused to follow rutherford and that's where the split took place.

i was so stoked about the whole idea a few years ago, but am having serious misgivings at this point.. what are your experiences / impressions / opinions?.
I think it's a splendid Idea............If your a drunk. Get the car started.......... punch in your address............. crawl in the back and pass out.
2020 is days away.
has anything really changed for the witnesses or the religion?
?.
What has changed is the use of the internet. Once Satan's internet........ is now the life line that the Society uses. However the problem is that the entire internet can now be accessed by any inquiring person even those that attend a meeting and see the truth for what it is.
This is true of all religions and the end result is the fastest growth is now coming from the 'Nons'........... people who don't recognize any truth in beliefs that can't be proved.
mine is : jws preach that the entire population of the earth has been deceived ..
All religions are deceptive.......... it's in their very nature.
Since god doesn't communicate........ everything that is about god is a bad translation of that silence.
https://www.jw.org/en/news/jw/region/guatemala/police-and-fire-department-officials-in-guatemala-benefit-from-bible-based-workshops/.
i am surprised that a government authority is calling on a religious organization to give their police and fire department officials instructions to behave in a better way with the guatemalan population.
the organization of jehovah's witnesses is well known to separate families (shunning) and have in the past protected numerous pedophiles within their organization ( maybe they are still doing it now somewhere in secret, who knows ?
Let's hope they are not encouraging the 'two witness rule' before the authorities are allowed to do their job.
in recent months i have noticed more and more people on the net (including here) are using this latest perversion of the english language -.
"i would of done this..........or he would of tried to change things".
it's would've - short for would have!.
What nonsense...I don't have the slightest difficulty understanding what someone has to say. It's their intent, their issue...... that matters.
Maybe instead of hearing a person the key is to listen to what they have to say and not judge on the occasional mispronunciation.
I learned to hold back my judgement of someone's use of language because we have a lot of people on this forum where English is not their first language. I don't have a second language so I stand back and allow for that.
And by the way your proper English language can be totally screwed over with little private words that have traveled down through the centuries.
words like:
hi i haven't posted for a while but i have a question and would appreciate any advice offered.
i left the cult 2 years ago and i'm so happy now.
i struggled at first and with the help of the lovely men and women on here i got stronger and started to find myself and ive grown as a person (i'm not being told who i am or who i should be anymore).
" I'm dreading (?) the day he comes back saying his dad says he'll die at armageddon if he doesn't become a witness".
Simply reflect the issue into a level that is appropriate to his understanding.
Sort of like "What a very silly idea! God is not a monster. He loves the little children".
When he starts school and as he grows over the years make sure he can enjoy the social aspects.
Encourage him to enjoy the present.......... but also to look forward.
If his JW father becomes hurt full or insistent that he becomes a JW I have heard about negative JW issues looked at by family court judges who restrict the JW parent and tighten up on visits.
the governing body has lovingly provided instructions and reminders to couples that they should pray before having sex.
please be obedient and follow the wise counsel from the gb leaders who never stick their noses into other peoples business and are not creepy cult leaders at all....not!.
"had he not created the first human pair so that they could cohabit, planted in them an attraction for each other and then commanded them to "be fruitful and become many"?
All I can say on this matter, which I learned from a young Bethelite, is......
..........if your little general stands up you better salute him.
i'm a first time poster and i apologize if this topic has been discussed before.
when i met my wife she was disfellowshiped and were happy, got married, and had a kid.
after we had our daughter she got reinstated so her family and her jw "friends" could spend time with our daughter.
"Long story short the JWs have created a void in our relationship and I have filed for divorce for a couple reasons, but I'm worried about the JW upbringing being inflected on my daughter. "
Since you are going to have some type of joint custody you should come out of this in decent shape. And have the privilege of helping your daughter to think for herself.
However what is a more serious influence are the personal friendships she may make in the Kingdom Hall with kids of her age who come from serious JW homes.
The counter to this is to encourage her to make friends at school and also get involved in after school monitored events. If she has a foot in both worlds she will have an opportunity to think for herself.
The JW's are terrible with children it's just not their nasty pedophile problem but their call for a life time of obedience to whatever they can dream up.
It doesn't sound like her mother is going to function on her own......nor stay committed to the strict beliefs of the JW's.
If the subject of getting baptized comes up do mention that Jesus was thirty years old when Baptized.
There is a bunch of stuff we can discuss based on so many of us who had to deal with and survive the JW world.
P.S. You need to talk about the JW ban on blood transfusions in your custody agreement and need to be immediately notified if she needs a life saving transfusion.
as much as i enjoy you and pete's company, you also know our understanding of how much we want you to be reunited with jehovah and his people.. .
we did not set the standards for what jehovah says about our associations with those who choose to not serve him.
so we will always be there for you and pete, but it is in your hands as to how we can enjoy your friendship.. .
"In a religious context, shunning is a formal decision by a denomination or a congregation to cease interaction with an individual or a group, and follows a particular set of rules."
The JW's are indeed coerced by the WTBTS and their Elders to shun JW Family and or close friends under the threat of being shunned themselves if they don't shun.
Being coerced to do something a person would be reluctant to do is a crime of duress.
