This too Shall Pass (RC Commission vs WTS)
by undercover inwhile i'm glad that the practices of the wts are under review and the australian commission is taking them to task, i'm not really expecting huge changes in the long run.
oh, they may have to agree to some changes in how they report crimes brought to elders' attention, but this excitement over the supposed expose of wt practices shall pass, and jws will soon be canvassing neighborhoods and rolling their carts, looking for converts.
conventions will go on.

This RC will have an effect for years to come in many ways.
The org. thought they had the best pedo policy in the World in comparison to other religions. The RC showed that writing articles was not enough.
The org. thought that as they were the only ones that took matters seriously and held JC's, and investigated matters they were way ahead. The RC showed that this procedure alone put them in a different position and makes them more accountable for their actions on two levels. Firstly the moral aspect that the elders in many instances were now of the full knowledge that they had identified (beyond accusations) that they had full knowledge of there being a pedo. That makes them responsible for hiding that information and doing nothing to protect the public at large and little for those within their commune. It is a moral issue that they have dealt with inappropriately Secondly, they have identified a criminal and by law their responsibilities may go beyond mandatory reporting requirements in certain countries where a known criminal must be reported. The RC also pointed out that their claimed clergy privilege was very shaky in their circumstances because of the amount of people involved and how they internally report on the matter.
Now that Geoffrey Jackson is involved, being required to provide a statement and verbal testimony, it will be evidence that any court around the World will be able to use.
After this Friday it's still not over, the best is still to come. The Commission requires them to consider all the information that has been revealed through the hearings and statements which has identified the wrong practices and inefficiencies. Many of these the Elders have testified that they fall short. The Commission has identified issues that are, in their own words, 'serious issues'. They are required and have been directed to not only identify them but explain how they will personally address these issues. Within the next couple of years they will be required to return to the Commission with these findings and solutions.
If they choose not to change or not to recognized the serious issues they have there will still be a report from the RC with their findings directly dealing with the inadequacies of the JWs. That report will be damning and it would be better for them to co-operate.
They think it is bad now, once they submit their reform papers to the Commission it will demonstrate that they have needed the intervention of Government to change their practices and it will be an admittance that they recognize the negligence of their past policies.
This is all for the protection of the victim and there is no way the org can wiggle out of this one calling it persecution and lies.

As someone else pointed out the wording in the Media Release states that they 'anticipate' that this hearing will take place.
This might suggest that they have as yet had no confirmation from Geoffrey Jackson that he will attend.

"He said he did not marry me to be signed up to an apostate"
Yes he did and it's part of his scriptural obligation. He probably said this out of anger but it must leave you with guilt feelings when you should have none. You signed up to a religion that you did not fully understand, that doesn't make you guilty.
I am very careful not to speak negatively about the witnesses beliefs to him and support him in still wanting to be a witness. I can live with him being a witness. I don't know if he can handle me celebrating holidays and openly hanging out with apostates.
Others with experience will have more insight about this but I guess now it all comes down to respect for each other. Celebrating a birthday in your home would be very hurtful. Whether you would tell him that you were going to a Birthday party or not is a personal decision but in marriage being honest is probably the best approach.

a jehovah's witness official says the church's stance to never let women hold decision-making roles compares to muslim and aboriginal people adhering to their own ancient beliefs.

A search on the WT library with the words 'approach mature sister' brought up 2 results, one from a KM which said a sister could approach another sister to give her opinion about her clothing.
The other comment was this from the W 1973 9/15. It is under the title 'Breaking free from SELF abuse'. Guess what the self-abuse is? Yep, masturbation. However it does set a precedent.
Some persons find it most difficult to discontinue the habit abruptly. So, when they occasionally relapse—usually in a state of semiconscious sleep—they develop deep feelings of guilt and of being unworthy of Jehovah’s mercy. For these reasons it is not only helpful but often advisable to seek the aid and encouragement of a Christian elder. When a girl has the problem she may want to approach either an elder or a mature, respected Christian sister for help.—Titus 2:2-4.
Titus 2:2-4 states
2 Let the aged men be moderate in habits, serious, sound in mind, healthy in faith, in love, in endurance. 3 Likewise let the aged women be reverent in behavior, not slanderous, neither enslaved to a lot of wine, teachers of what is good; 4 that they may recall the young women to their senses to love their husbands, to love their children
Seems to me that this supports teaching and shepherding in the congregation, but only between females.
Watchtower 91 7/1 states this
Our review of women mentioned in the Bible has enabled us to see that age does not prevent women of faith from serving Jehovah. This fact was illustrated in the cases of Sarah, Elizabeth, and Anna. Today, there are many Christian women advanced in years who are fine examples of faith and endurance. In addition, they can discreetly back up the elders by helping the younger sisters. Drawing on their long experience, they can give wise counsel to younger women, even as the Scriptures authorize them to do. (Titus 2:3-5)
