Could it be that atheists in this forum are distinguished from your run-of-the-mill atheist insofar as we are all characterised by some separate and distinct connection to the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society? This is the jehovahs-witness.net, after all. Could it also be that said atheists are more or less angry at the WTBTS for any number of reasons - it being the uninvited third party in my marriage over the last 33 years, in my case - and, since the proponents and adherents of the WTBTS equate their organisation to God himself, we atheists are by default angry at God in their eyes?

That said, I could be wrong. Maybe someone with a better knowledge of history could relate an example where superstition promoted real progress.
Alchemy comes to mind.

Why You Loyal Witnesses Should Oppose Disfellowshipping

I don't think Jehovah's Witnesses are capable of understanding this topic. You're wasting your time.

I shake my head at people rationalizing a barbaric and inhumane practice. It is not so much disfellowshipping as shunning. Is it right for parents to shun a child who was baptised but who has lost his faith in the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society yet still associate and show kindness to another child who was never baptised and never had faith to lose? This has happened in my wife's family. Shunning is not love, no matter how you dress it up. It is a hateful, inhumane and hypocritical practice for which all you Witnesses of Jehovah should feel the deepest shame. Shame on you. Whatever respect I had for you and your Society is gone.

Not so much anger as frustration. When faced with blind faith and refusal to consider any contrarian perspective whatsoever, no matter how well founded and supported by evidence, the true atheist cannot help but experience frustration. The true atheist has arrived at what he perceives to be true through an intellectual processes, not an emotional one. He reasons, he examines the evidence, he looks exhaustively for flaws in the argument and, finding none, he succumbs to his perception of reality. There is no anger in that.

Jehovahs Witnesses taught that Armageddon would occur in 1914,1915,1918,1921,1925,1932,1941 and 1975. Who is the father

Let me transpose an exerpt from the speech, complete with Franz's word whiskers, when he talks about the time immediately after Adam's 6,000th birthday:
"And we should not jump to, ah, wrong decisions on that account and say, well, the time after September 5, 1975 is indefinitely long and so it will allow for me, ah, to realise my, ah, human aspirations. Getting married, raising a family and kids or, ah, ah, going to college for a few years and learning engineering and signing a signed, ah, petition as an engineer, civil engineer or electrical engineer or some other prominent, ah, fine paying job. No! The time does not allow for that, dear friends! The time is short! As the apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians, ah, chapter 7, ah, and verse 29. The time left is reduced!"
No ambiguity there. How many lives were ruined by this pathetic man and his corrupt society?

If you have the stomach for it, this link will take you to an mp3 file of the very long speech Fred Franz made on February 10, 1975 to 20,000 Jehovah's Witnesses in which he makes it very, very clear that Armageddon was imminent. Some exerpts have been taken from this speech and posted elsewhere, but it is not until you listen to the whole thing do you realise how damning the evidence is that "1975" was official Watchtower doctrine.

Secrets to the exit -- so long Watchtower!
by Marie B. Paraison ini agree that truth is progressivewe need more time to understand.
this is the excuse given by the members of the governing body for the changes in their understanding.
should not this latitude be granted the other religions?

Doubtless I did not, garyneal. Sometimes, maybe even oftentimes, I have a hard time getting past breathless religious pronouncements. This is just me being the cranky old blister that I am. I'll try to be more respectful.

Keep in mind, dear Tams (peace to you, dear one!)... that one cannot bring forth what isn't in one.
I presume, SA, you are referring to bullshit?

Yeah, you're right, Tammy. Even if they're barking mad. Point taken.
