"The Bible is Not a Book. It's a Library."
by leavingwt ini would like to call your attention to this recent article by karl giberson, ph.d., scholar of science & religion, and the former president of the biologos foundation.
his conclusion is that we need not dismiss all of the bible, just because some of it is not accurate.
.. but how do we decide which parts of the bible should be read literally?

Fingers in the ears tactic
by trailerfitter inhi again, some of you know my partner is going down the road to the kingdom hall and will be baptised soon.
thanks to those who gave some expert and wonderful advice about this earlier.... i am opposed to the jws message.
i wonder some times if i just agreed to everything all will be okay.

You are in a bad spot. If your wife is preparing for Baptism into the JWs I feel it would be reasonable to set down with her and ask her how this decision will be impacting your family relationship. If you are expected to respect her new vows how does she feel about respecting yours? You may find situations that require compromise. Will she accept compromise? JWs are all about zero compromise. I think this serious conversation is really necessary ASAP. You sound like you might be of an age to be starting a family. This is an extremely serious matter to agree on. Will your children be raised as JWs? etc etc.
PS. The fingers in the ears are a dead givaway that she is not confident of her conviction.

KINGDOM HALL IN SHANNON NEW ZEALAND LIES TIDY BUT EMPTY?!!
by steve2 inthere's a kingdom hall in shannon, a small rural town in manawatu, new zealand, 16 kms from the nearest town, foxton, and about 30 kms from palmerston north city (population around 80,000).
jws used to go on about how fast they were growing in new zealand that even a small town like shannon (population little more than 1,000) has its very own kingdom hall.
in the late 70s, the local jws worked hard to build a brand new kingdom hall and i was among the happy throngs when it was dedicated.

I would suspect this increase in number of congs could be attributed to splitting congs and sharing the building. I went through this twice.

CO talked out of both sides of his mouth
by life is to short intoday was the last day of the co's visit, my husband stayed home from the meeting and we painted the house together which was good, but he wanted to tie into the meeting, i was ok with it as it allows me to point out the stupid parts of this religion.
there were many things that made no sense but one that truly stuck out.. in his talk the co went on about how there are so many things satan uses to distract us from jehovah and one of them was fear of our future and how some work all their lives for retirement, many at jobs they hate.
people do not enjoy the here and now all out of fear for what will happen when they grow old.

Dozy - It's all covered. Stalin and Mao will be resurrected to help get things organized. The Great Sterilization program will be touchy but will have to be done.

I am guilty of failing to post my appreciation for these thorough deconstructions of the WT study. You are amazing, Blondie. Your hardwork, intellect and skills are amazing. I think your readers might fall into a couple or three catagories
- The XJW like myself, who doesn't need any more evidence or discussion. That was settled a long time ago. But it is still fascinating to read the current 'spiritual food' recipes that are being served up.
- The JW who is strong enough to lurk here and compare a different perspective with the official pre-chewed spiritual food from the beak of the GB.
- In betweeners.

Today is pre-colonoscopy day. My second in 6 yrs. I had forgotten the biggest annoyance of these degrading procedures. The purging and starvation the day before so that they can take stick their things into you and take their filthy pictures without puting them off their lunch by seeing something nasty in your poop shoot.
Right now, I could eat the ass out of a dead skunk.
Time for another cup of chicken broth.

The Polarizing of America: Rep. Michele Bachmann wins Iowa Straw Poll
by darthfader inhttp://news.yahoo.com/bachmann-wins-gop-2012-test-vote-224544660.html.
minnesota rep. michele bachmann won a test vote of iowans on saturday, a show of strength five months before the state's caucuses kick off the gop presidential nominating season.. the result is the first indication of what iowans think of the field of republicans competing for the chance to challenge president barack obama next fall.
but it's hardly predictive of who will win the winter iowa contest, much less the party nod or the white house.. well... there goes the neighborhood....

I understand what your saying, NC. But when you consider basics like, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" or "you who are without sin, cast the first stone" or the parable of the Good Samaritan, etc. it is hard to deny they are important basics of a free society.
Sometimes, in my opinion, we only think of Christian values in the context of JWs or some other controlling organized religion. The Bible has no endorsements of an organized religion. The word 'Christian' is not required. Christians didn't invent these values, rather the other way around.
PS. I don't believe in God, ghosts or any other supernatural concept. But I find in my own nature an agreement with values that have been written down in the Bible, and other writings, that are hard to argue with.

Sam said - " A code of conduct and function linked to the Bible is how we come this far....like it not"
I think this is a good point that should not be brushed aside by athiests. I am an atheist to the bone, but the principle of a moral guidebook cannot be underestimated in it's importance to a good system of human organisation. The Constitution is imperfect but it has been better than any other government structure in history.

Why does health care cost so much? Why are we paying more each year (more than CPI) for the same services? Shouldn’t they be able to reduce costs each year because of new technology and increased efficiencies?
Here's a clue to just one reason we have the above situation. The Democratic party has three big special interest groups, the biggest of course being Big Unions. Right up there are the trial lawyers, the John Edwards types who get filthy rich from tort cases with no limit jury awards. Not to mention Big corps like GE and the banking rackets and Wall Street.
Glad you can get a giggle NC. Must be a treat for someone as grim and negative as most self righteous libs.
