the sad thing is how many teenagers are involved. Hopefully the government will offer some immediate solutions and then the bigger issues can be addressed in the weeks and months to come.
we need some sort of curfew at the moment.

it just popped into my head.. so, i finally made time to see 'winter's bone'--i was really excited to see it was on netflix.
This has nothing to do with this topic, which makes it in violation of the rules, I'm sure, but I was just thinkin' |
- I needed a laugh this very bleak morning after riots and looting here in london.
In Tottenham the home of an elder was burned down Saturday night along with many other homes. And in addition to the major riots there many mini riots and looting springing up in lots of places around here. teenagers in hoodies collecting on corners about 5 mins away from where we live and reports suggest that our area is next. we are keeping a bag packed
what started as a protest re the police is developing into protest about job losses, university cuts etc. these youngesters are very brazen. At tottenham macdonalds after breaking in they made themselves breakfast early sunday morning.
i'm a long time lurker here.. i'm not and never have been a jw, but i am trying to get an understanding of what it means to be disfellowshipped for the sake of someone i know.. my husband and i pastor a small church, we're nothing special, just a group of people who get together to seek god.
we're open to everyone and people pop in as they want to.
recently a woman in her early twenties has started turning up.
your church may be all she needs at the moment. I'm so glad you guys are looking out for her.
btw as you are a long time lurker you probably know that we tend to put believers through the wringer - would you still want her to come here? she may receive support but lose her beliefs.

mr monroe
regarding the points you mention here
I don't think Steve Unthank has a case because jehovahs witnesses do not engage in specific child related work according to the Act. they don't have separate sunday schools. Wherever children take part in religious activities adults are not excluded - the activitities apply to adults and children. If this goes to court Jehovahs witness lawyers will be able to refute his claims very successfully imo. Sorry, Curtains, you're wrong. The Sunday school defence is a distraction. As a former book study conductor I was often in a situation in congregations where I was out witnessing with a child who was not my own. Sometimes we would transfer from one part of the territory to another and a child would ride with me in my car on my own. Sometimes we would be working on our own in a block of flats, out of sight of the rest of the group. I don't think those situations are at all rare. I can also think of many situations at hall cleaning groups, when turnout was pathetic, that an adult was there pretty well on their own with a child, or alternatively there were so few adults around that a paedophile adult JW could easily coax a child to a toilet or back room or whatever. The issue here is not that all JW adults are prone to sex abuse. It would be a rarity. But the law is the law: for the sake of appearances ALL church ministers, Scout leaders, footy coaches, youth group workers etc take out WWC checks. It helps to ease the mind of parents, but it is also the law. A legal requirement. |
If we put aside the issue of fulfilling the aspect of whether or not Jehovahs witnesses do engage in child related activities and assume that they do then one has to address the next issue. The act says that in religious organisations parents are exempt if the child related activites they are usually participating in are also usually participated in by their children. So, for example, were you a parent when you participated in providing lifts for other people's children? If you were a parent then you would have been exempt.
the same question could be asked regarding the specific congregation elders that Mr Unthank is accusing. If they are all parents then they are exempt and if they all exempt then this weakens his case. If even only one of the ones below is not a parent then he has a stronger case.
All charges are in relation to allegations of unlawful activities carried out within the Traralgon Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses by the entire Body of Elders within the Traralgon Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. (Mr Unthank, p1 of this thread) |
I guess the same apples to any aspect of Mr Unthank's charges if they relate to the above elders' failure to ensure that non parent members of the congregation who engaged in child related activites had had their checks completed.

In the OP Mr Unthank does strongly suggest instrumentality on the part of the justice department in bringing this case to court. In informing myself from the links it is obvious that this is not true.
Many here myself included have become confused by the way Mr Unthank seems to suggest that there is a close connection between the governmental inquiry and the court hearing. This does not appear to be true either.
hi tammy welcome back
lots of witnesses turn to Jesus when they leave. Jesus is associated with love, forgiveness, kindness, joy and holy spirit and endurance in the NT. In contrast Jehovah stands out as a party pooper - no worldly celebrations, no friends, no love - but lots of death, destruction and mighty denunciations. JWs have given him a very war mongering, hatefilled role.
I'm so glad you have a close personal relationship with Jesus.

this is the first time I'm hearing about spanking rooms but I can certainly believe that it is true.
One elder still recommeds spanking to keep children as young as 2 quiet during meal times and at the meetings. This shocked me greatly and I was very glad when the parents of one particular child did not listen to him.
Unfortunately parents still spank their children at the hall but not as much as they did in the past (this is what I've been told). At the recent convention we sat in the children's section and most parents around us were very patient and loving towards their children.
In this country spanking is very very discouraged and the government has produced some helpful lit on the subject of how to discipline effectively. maybe I ought to give this particular elder some of it.
