China building world's largest 3D printer to construct houses

A Chinese company wants to print entire houses using 3D printing. Qingdao Unique Products Develop Co Ltd, a local maker of 3-D printers, has unveiled the world's largest 3D printer last week at the 2014 World 3D Printing Technology Industry Conference and Exhibition held in Qingdao.
This massive 3D printer has a build volume of 12 m x 12 m x 12 m. According to Wang Hong, company's founder and CEO, the company has spent the last 6 months developing this giant printer. It weighs more than 120 tons and was assembled using cranes and other machines.
The giant 3D printer is currently placed in the High-tech Zone of local 3D Printing Industrial Park and will be open to the public. Its first task is to print a seven-meter high "Temple of Heaven", the largest extant sacrificial temple in China, using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process.
One notable advantage of this new printer is its use of graphene glass fiber reinforced plastic as 3D printing materials, which is light weight, strong, corrosion-resistant, and environmentally friendly.
The 3D printed Temple of Heaven will have floor space of 100 square meters and will consume 20 tons of material, a mixture of 8 tons of new material and 12 tons of concrete. "Traditionally you need at least 150 tons of concrete to build such a structure." said Wang.
"It will take at least 6 to 8 months to build up the structure layer by layer, just like building a house." Qingdao Unique told 3ders.org. Once built, it will become the world's biggest structure constructed by 3D printing technology.
"Compared to the 3D Printer the Dutch Architects used for the "Canal House" in Amsterdam last year, the size of this 3D building printer expands nearly three times." explained Qingdao Unique to us. The company said that their printer is able to print entire building out in one print job, rather than printing out each pieces and then bonding them together. In addition, they believe that their 3D printed building are three times as strong because they use graphene glass fiber reinforced plastic as printing materials.
The company believes the 3D printer can be used for post-disaster recovery and reconstruction in the near future.

Archaeologists have uncovered massive columns in Laodicea, a large ancient city in western Turkey that served as an early center of Christianity. The 1900-year-old columns were found in the city’s northern agora, an area described by the Turkish paper Hurriyet Daily Newsas “one of the oldest faith centers in Anatolia.”

Given the importance of Asia Minor to the apostle Paul and other early followers of Jesus, it should come as no surprise that a church from the fourth century was discovered recently in western Turkey. Turkey announced at the end of January 2011 that a large, well-preserved church had been found at Laodicea using ground-penetrating radar. According to excavation director Celal Şimşek of Pamukkale University, the church was built during the reign of Constantine (306–337) and destroyed by an earthquake in the early seventh century. There are 11 apses—one facing east and five each on the northern and southern sides. Floral and geometric mosaics as well as opus sectile pavement cover the floors. The cross-shaped marble baptistery, located at the end of a long corridor on the north side of the church, is one of the oldest and best-preserved ever discovered.
Laodicea is mentioned several times in the New Testament, in both Paul’s letter to the Colossians (2:1, 4:13–16) and the Book of Revelation, in which it is one of the seven churches in Asia [Minor] to receive the message revealed to John that the “time is near” (Revelation 1:3, 11, 3:14–22). Paul’s letter suggests that Laodicea had a very early Christian community with close ties to the one in Colossus (11 mi away), possibly having been evangelized by Paul’s disciple Epaphras, who is mentioned by name in the epistle.
In the Book of Revelation, however, the Laodiceans are chastised for being “lukewarm, neither cold nor hot” and for failing to recognize their spiritual want in the midst of their material wealth and prosperity (Revelation 3:16–17). The ruins of ancient Laodicea indicate that its residents were indeed fairly well-to-do, no doubt benefiting from their position on a bustling trade route. According to first-century Greek historian Strabo, Laodicea was also home to a well-known medical school. The Seleucid king Antiochus II of Syria founded Laodicea ad Lyceum (as it is more properly called) between 261 and 253 B.C. and named it in honor of his wife, Laodice. Remains from the Hellenistic and Roman periods include two theaters, a stadium and a nymphaeum, a monumental fountain that continued in use into the Byzantine period (fourth–seventh centuries), when it was walled off and converted into a Christian structure.A bishop’s seat was located at Laodicea very early on, and it remains a titular see of the Roman Catholic Church today, although the city is uninhabited and the bishop’s seat has been vacant since 1968. In 363–364 A.D., clergy from all over Asia Minor convened at the regional Council of Laodicea to discuss issues of clerical and lay conduct and to specify the authoritative texts of the Biblical canon. The council included the Book of Baruch and the Epistle of Jeremiah in its canon of the Old Testament but did not include the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. (The later ecumenical Council of Chalcedon in 451 and the Quinisext Council of 692 confirmed all the decisions of the Laodicean Council, although the Biblical canon differs somewhat today.) It is possible that the newly discovered church is the very same building where Asia Minor’s clergy met to hold the influential Council of Laodicea, but certainly much remains to be revealed and studied here.

An ancient church mentioned in the Bible has been discovered in western Turkey, according to the head of the excavation.
Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay visited the ancient city of Laodicea on Sunday in Denizli province and was briefed by Professor Celal Şimşek, head of the excavation team. The professor said they have discovered the Laodicea Church, one of the seven mentioned in the Bible. Şimşek said the church from the fourth century A.D. was found by underground radar search, a system they have tried this year for the first time. “The major part of the church, which is built on an area of 2,000 square meters, has kept its original [status].”
Minister Günay said he is very excited about the discovery, adding that archeology in Turkey developed greatly recently and the ministry is supporting academics fully. The minister said the excavations have been running nonstop since the site was transferred to the municipality of Denizli. “This summer we may invite the foreign press and organize a gathering after important steps are taken for renovation and the building is fully unearthed.” The minister said the church added to the already present historical richness of the ancient city and said he was happy that important sites other than Ephesus are coming into the spotlight. According to the minister, the baptismal pool at the Laodicea Church is even more exciting than the one at Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.
At a very early period, the city of Laodicea became one of the chief seats of Christianity, and the see of a bishop. Laodicea receives passing mention in the epistle to the Colossians and is one of the seven churches of Asia mentioned in the Book of Revelations. The Laodicean church is thought to have been founded by the Colossian Epaphras, a Christian preacher who spread the Gospel to his fellow Colossian citizens.

That's not much information to tell is what we are seeing, so I've gone elsewhere to see what I could find.
The images indicate that this must have been quite a grandiose building, and my guess is that it's late 3rd century to late 4th C., possibly part of Constantine's sponsored church building program.

the region is also close to north korea.. chinese and russian leaders inked a deal on the port at mays conference on interaction and confidence building measures in asia (cica) in shanghai, the report said.. the move represents the latest step by beijing and moscow to boost their energy and infrastructure ties.. resource-hungry china is seeking to diversify its sources of energy amid booming domestic consumption, while russia at odds with the west over its annexation of ukraines crimea peninsula is seeking to refocus its gas and oil exports towards asia.. the same report spoke of the commencement of construction of the gas pipeline from yakutsk to china.

In the Chinese newspapers today, an announcement that as part of a Ten billion dollar linked to the huge energy deal of last May, China will build a 400 km/hour rail link between Moscow and Kazan, a city on the Volga (approx, 770 km distance) reducing travel time from 13 hours to less than 4.
It is planned that this will be the first stage of an eventual high speed link between Moscow and Beijing, and perhaps further into south Korea.

High-speed rail part of deals worth $10b
(China Daily) 07:11, October 14, 2014China will take a decisive stake in the next stage of Russia's transportation development,with Chinese companies building the country's first high-speed rail line. The agreementformed part of joint deals worth $10 billion being signed on Monday.
Chinese firms and their Russian partners will hold talks on design, financing, supplyingfacilities and construction of a 770-km high-speed line connecting Moscow and Kazan, animportant metropolis on the Volga River.
This was one of 39 agreements being signed after Premier Li Keqiang and Russian PrimeMinister Dmitry Medvedev met for the 19th Regular Prime Ministers' Meetings.
Under the Russian plan, the line will form the initial section of a railway stretching toBeijing, with completion scheduled for 2018 in time for the World Cup soccer finals inRussia. Kazan is one of the host cities.
Trains on the line will reach speeds of up to 400 km/h, shortening the traveling timebetween the two cities from 13 hours to three and a half, according
to the Moscow Timesnewspaper.
Under other agreements being signed on Monday, the State Grid Corp of China will help to upgrade Russia's electricity network.
Details of the support measures, technical terms and legal protection were also settledregarding a $400 billion cooperation project to transport natural
gas from Russia to China.
A currency swap agreement was signed, allowing businesspeople to make direct settlementin the renminbi and rouble to prevent losses from an easing of the US dollar.
Margarete Klein, a researcher on Eastern Europe and Eurasia at the German Institute forInternational and Security Affairs, a think tank in Berlin, said Moscow is willing to workhard to achieve breakthroughs in large cooperation projects with Beijing.
This is because it wants to demonstrate that Russia is not isolated and, against thebackdrop of EU sanctions imposed over the conflict in Ukraine.
Yang Hao, a professor at Beijing Jiaotong University who researches rail transportationmanagement, said China has advanced technology and valuable experience in railwayconstruction and operations. Beijing is willing to export these, while Moscow wants to improve rail services and upgrade infrastructure.
Yang said the two countries have a track record of rail cooperation dating to the 1950s,when China introduced technology, engineers and manuals from the former Soviet Union to build its own rail network. However, cooperation was sidelined in the 1960s as relations chilled. "Now is the time to reinvigorate this cooperation, as both governments wish,"Yang said.
But such cooperation must first overcome a disparity in track gauges between the two countries, Yang said.
"It will not be easy for Chinese companies to design or build Russian rail lines, becausethey will have to adapt to wide tracks and must make many changes to trains andequipment," Yang said.
Gauri Khandekar, a researcher at Agora Asia-Europe, a knowledge hub on EU-Asiarelations in the Brussels office of FRIDE, a European think tank, said more high-techproducts will be exported by China, which has made significant technological advances.
Khandekar cited high-speed trains as an "impressive example".

Monday's report, issued half-way through the two-week meeting, said:
"Homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer to the Christian community.
And asked,
"Are we capable of welcoming these people, guaranteeing to them a fraternal space in our communities?"
