  Umm! Posters like that can be annoying, however in the case of the poster DJS and cantleave are referring to, this topic is so disturbing to them that I suggest something very deep is an issue in their deepest psyche. Therefore I recommend being kind to them, as we don't really know who they are, or what is going on in their lives, or the extent to which their lives have been damaged by Christian ideology,

  The issue of same sex attraction clearly causes some people great anguish. Why else would we see the terrible crimes that some homophobes have committed, or the violent, excessive language that is sometimes posted. I'm not sure precisely why that is the case, but think it likely, that since a satisfying sex life has much greater importance in our lives than Christian ideology allows, that the internal psychological rifts brought about by Christian attitudes to same sex attraction causes an emotional state approaching hysteria.

  I recall an idea perhaps originating with Michel Foucault. That the causes of hysteria (i.e. exaggerated or uncontrollable emotion or excitement ) are to be found in the disorders of a person's pscyo-sexual life.

  I cant claim an expert knowledge of Foucault's ideas, but can see where the idea (which I just attempted to express) may take us.

  snugglebunny: It's probably true of early teens. Back in the day many of my school mates would indulge in same sex relationships, however it was generally regarded as a "make do" stop-gap until a willing female was encountered.
  JW boys were no different. Although we were aware that sexual intercourse resulted in disfellowshipping, it didn't occur to anyone that same-sex play was any more serious than masturbation. The WT only talked about fornication, little else.

  Grin!!! - Interesting point, snugglebunny! My gayxjw friend once belonged to a gayxjw group (I think it was called 'Common Bond" or something like that). The members used to swap experiences, and quite a few stories emerged (he says) of future circuit overseers and missionaries, at least allowing another young man to perform oral sex on them. (Bill Clinton's defense was a common concept).

  A former Aussie branch overseer told me once that the branch had to send two young men who roomed together home, because they had fallen in love with each other and started having sex together.

  I also know of two young Aussie missionaries assigned to Cambodia (thus on their own - i.e. no organisation around them) who 'fell in love with each other.'

  That story has a sad ending. One of these men fell sick and died of some infection. With little money, the surviving guy had to dispose of the body of his friend (lover) by the usual method in Cambodia, cremation. He did not have enough money to buy sufficient wood for the fire, so not only had to build the funeral pyre, place his lover on it, and set the pyre on fire. Maybe because he lacked the skill to build the pyre correctly, but more likely because he had not bought enough wood, the body kept slipping out of the fire, and he had to keep pushing it back into the fire. Unsurprisingly, he had an emotional breakdown and returned to Aust. A representative from the Hongkong branch went to Cambodia to end the lease on the (so-called) 'home,' and found some incriminating evidence of their relationship. Confronted in Australia the surviving young man confessed.

  And, recently the Percy Chapman story emerged again. I meant to post some much greater detail that has been published online, but did not get around to it.

  It all demonstrates the essential truth of the initial report I posted. Human sexuality is not as black and white as the gay/straight dichotomy suggests, or the male/female dichotomy suggests.

  Left to themselves without the evil of Christian teachings on human sexuality, humans will (as LoveUniHateExams hopes) cross and re-cross gender lines, in both their sexual and romantic experiences.

  Funny VI, :) but still a stereotype. Through my GAYXJW friend, I've met quite a few men that are attracted to other males and few match that stereotype.

  In fact, some same sex attracted men that I've met are the epitome of butch masculinity, unless you knew their same sex attraction you would believe they were str8, and they of course blended into the social landscape and were never seen as gay, but your stereotype person who represents a small fraction of same sex attracted males, could never blend in, and were always marked as different, and for many centuries were the only guys with big enough balls to be what they were, thought they sometimes paid for that with their lives.

  Not trying to put you down for posting - the video is funny, but .... stereotypes are going out of fashion as the Independents overview reminded us.

  we all know the bible story (as its translated into english) that eve was made from adam's rib.

  now bible scholar, ziony zevit, distinguished professor of biblical literature and northwest semitic languages at american jewish university in bel-air, california has written in the 'biblical archeological review' that the hebrew word that is traditionally translated as rib which is 'istsela has been wrongly translated.. zevit says, "it was first translated as rib in the septuagint, a greek translation of the hebrew bible from the mid-third century b.c.e.

  however, a more careful reading of the hebrew word for rib in the adam and eve story suggests that eve was created from another, very different, part of adams anatomyhis os baculum (penis bone).".

  CalebInFloroda: If we could find out why so many Christians are intent on making the religious lessons and mythos of my people read as literal history, I believe we can also solve most of the world's problems. I kinda wish they had chosen some other culture's mythology to try to prove true because we Jews get blamed for their curious exegesis.

  Smile! I also often wonder what makes Christians (and maybe XChristians-grin) so obsessive about preaching. My pet hate is some obsessed, fanatical evangelist preacher with a portable sound system, turned up to peak volume, shouting in a city street, saying the single sentence, that we all need to repent, in a dozen different ways. No-one else is permitted to do this, but for some reason ordinary laws are suspended for this rat-baggery.

  But, Caleb, if people like Vermes, another Jewish scholar, are correct in seeing Jesus as always and in all-ways quintessentially Jewish, and if Jesus originated the preaching work (there's a proposition to discuss) then can Judaism escape from being (at least partly) the origin of the Christian model. I wonder what it would've been like living next door to a fanatical Essene (if the Essenes really were part of the Qmran group). There are some scholars who say that the Galilean hills were full of (hyperbole) itinerant preachers like Jesus

  And then there's their predecessors, the prophets of old. Do you not imagine them as still talking, even when buried in wet sloppy cement?

  Its curious, that in a nation that poses as the most advanced society on earth, over 50% of its citizens believe first, that the Bible is the inspired word of God, and second, that they exist on the earth because that God first made Adam and Eve.*

  We are only talking about here, because as XJWs we once believed it all. It's strange, because we have no trouble recognising the mythical nature of Greek beliefs. For example, take the Greek myth telling of the birth of the goddess Athena:

  

  As pictured, Hephastaeus, split Zeus's head open with an axe, thus providing a birth canal for the goddess, who had grown inside Zeus. Fantasy? sure! And we recognise it as such, But do not some Biblical stories also read as fantasy? Why did we accept them without much questioning?

  And in ancient Greece, many accepted Athena. How they treated the story of her birth is not always clear. Perhaps some thinking people saw it as an allegory- as a means to explain her qualities. The Wikipedia entry describes Athena thus, she:

  "is the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, mathematics, strength, war strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill in ancient Greek religion and mythology. Minerva is the Roman goddess identified with Athena.

  Athena is portrayed as a shrewd companion of heroes and is the patron goddess of heroic endeavor. She is the virgin patroness of Athens. The Athenians founded the Parthenon on the Acropolis of her namesake city, Athens (Athena Parthenos), in her honor.
  Veneration of Athena was so persistent that archaic myths about her were recast to adapt to cultural changes. In her role as a protector of the city (polis), many people throughout the Greek world worshiped Athena as Athena Polias (Ἀθηνᾶ Πολιάς "Athena of the city"). While the city of Athens and the goddess Athena bear the same name (Athena the goddess, Athenai the city), it is not known which of the two words is derived from the other."

  And, those believing Greeks probably scorned the biblical stories as myth.

  So why did we suspend belief and accept the biblical myths as true? What does it tell us about our own minds? I leave that as a personal question, for those who are deciding whether they should now reject bible myths.
