what were or are the qualifications for certain "responsibilities" around the hall?
our hall literally has only ms or elders --- attending, doing stage set up, handling book counter/service desk, and reading wt and closing the service meeting with song and prayer.... the only exception is the young son of a high ranking elder at our hall... they put the restrictions that a ms has to meet on these activities, i am regular, but not active enough in the service although i assured them i was "doing the best i could" (3 - 5 hours a month) but they acted like that was terrible.... we had a heated discussion for 30 minutes.... .

It's a who you know outfit.
So, you gotta brown nose some elder who has been assigned responsibilty for a specifc duty in the KH. Also, you gotta show yourself are zealous hardworking spiritual man.
Make meaningful comments at the meeting, also you gotta do volunteer talks if they need one. All this adds brownie points, not just your preaching, but other ways you can contribute to the cong.
Obviously if you were an elders son you wouldn't have this problem...

i have been smoking off and on for over a year,,,,,,,never smoked before this year in my life.. it all started just for the hell of it.
then as my hub and i started going out dancing and hitting the town, cig smoke was everywhere.
i would comehome with it in my hair and all over my clothes.
I started smoking 5 years ago. Why ?? Because I can.
I smoke Winfield Menthol and also Park Drive Menthol. I prefer the Park Drive as you roll any size ciggie, I like thin ones, and they do not burn when you leave them unattended. So, you still have your ciggie ready and waiting.
Yeah it's not good for, but I enjoy sitting back and sucking down on a smoke and sipping a beer or 2, damned good way to relax and unwind.
Am I addicted ?? Yep, altho I can go a day or 2 without one, by the 3rd day I am hanging out.
Would I quit ?? Only if it got too expensive.
Mmmmm I just love that menthol flavour, yummm, think I will go light me up one now.

i'm new here and this is the first post i make (i promise that more will come).
i have been following most of the posts made here quietly for about 4 months and i would like to thank all of you who are called apostates for the well documented and researched material you have presented here.thanks to you i know now the truth about the wt organization and i'm no longer blind and misled.
i disassociated myself about 2 months ago after 15 years of very "faithful" service to the society.i was regular pioneer for 12 years and an elder for 8 years, i served mainly as the service overeer.my experience was published in the 2 of the society's magazins.. as i was a very zealous and prominent elder in my circuit i zealously promoted the organizational rules and i allowed myself to be fully used by the society to promote those mind controle techniques that now i know hurt those who were my sheep.

You have a good heart and so those in the cong that know you and love you for the person you are will be moved to speak to you despite the rules. I have experienced that myself where some will still even after 7 years of being out, make an effort to see me.
I hope you and your family enjoy this new life we have on the outside.

just wondering if there were any good funny stories out there with the songs.. there always were the loud ones, the ones who thought they could sing.. i remember wrong songs being played on the record, then later tape, (are they on c/d yet?
) and people singing to it, but the wrong music, but they keep going anyways, especially when the "new song book" came out.. how about when the record would skip.. of course there were the brothers back there who so loved their "repsonsibility" in the hall, and took the "privledge" of doing the music so serious.. i remember back when they allowed someone to actually play the piano, she sometimes would jazz it up a little, and the congregation loved it, made it more lively, until they were chastised for it.. and then of course, no one could play live anymore, didn't want to make the musician too proud.
do you think that was really the reason?

I remember we had live music in the hall, it was really nice to have a guitar, piano and other instruments playing.
And yes, we had a young talented pianist who also added flavour to the music, and yes he was hammered for it. However, one elder told him privately he enjoyed the feel and vibe he gave to his playing and the music.
Unfortunately this elder stepped down and our pianist had his hand smacked so many times. One stuck up, jumped up pr*ck of elder was always picking on him. It was the typical borg mentality, this is how it has been written by the society, so you do it their way or else you are outta here !!
Yeah the musicians sounded good and got some admiration and appreciation from the cong, but I noticed that certain elders too exception to that and used the tapes as an excuse to shaft the orchestra.
We even had a really good orchestra for the circuit assemblies, those were the days....

I knew one guy who had a beard. A really nice person, but he was ostracized for having one, they all viewed him as weak. Yep he had no privilidges either.
Then my most best-ist JW friend grew one, and did I cop it. I had the elders suggesting that he was not a good associate, that he is weak and my friendship with him would also weaken me. I ignored them and continued to our friendship. Later he shaved and fell into line with their ways and is an elder now...

for a few weeks i've had this 'sister' on my mind, although she is deceased.. i've heard through the grapevine that her widowed husband isn't doing so hot, so i thought i'd share some memories...... one of my very first memories of attending kh in my old hometown was of hilda.
hilda was one of the older ones even when i was young.
i'm thinking she was in her late 60's when i first made her acquaintance.
